So the demo is out on Xbox Live.

The good:

  • The small touches to enhance the story like having an option to turn off helmets in cutscenes really add to the immersive feel.
  • Loading times seem to be reduced considerably.
  • The story feels epic.

The bad:

  • You get a strong sense of "more of the same"; it really feels like ME2.1, but that's not a bad thing at all. Just don't expect as huge a leap as we got from ME1 to ME2.
  • The combat isn't quite as smooth as I expected it to be, but then again we are talking about a five year old combat system.
  • The EA Origin crap is all over the demo. The "Cerberus Network" has been replaced with the "Alliance Network".
  • Femshep's default hairstyle isn't available as a custom option :(

There's one which is pretty close, but definitely not identical.

Same with Male Shepard, really. It's a specifically modeled character, so the customs are going to look noticably worse. Just that default FemShep actually has hair so it's a lot more noticable.

Is there anything other than short hair available for Femshep at all?  I don't need a specific 1:1 conversion from "official" femshep's hair I just hate basically every single fucking hairstyle she's been allowed to have so far.

(DISCLAIMER: This is a minor quibble.)

Only the one I mentioned above, which is just above shoulder length really.

You know it's funny, my Femshep is a redhead too, but I tried playing the demo as the default one and had to reset.

Crono
Crono can cross dimensions too!

Lack of customization doesn't bother me since I always have and always will gone with default MaleShep.  I still can't decide if I want to try the demo... I'm thinking I'll wait it out till release day so nothing's spoiled.  I've done pretty well at media blackout on myself so far.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

Eh, some of the hair seems a bit longer and fuller than ME1 and 2, and there's a few more hair options than the previous. There's also the fact that this is a demo, not all the options may be there (though I'm fairly sure they are)

As for the combat not being smoother, I guess it depends on which platform you're playing it on. I'd agree with you on 360, but it feels a lot smoother and refined on PC. The game in genearl just seems to play better on PC,a fter playing both demos. As for the EA Origin stuff, it's no worse than ME2 or DA2 if you're playing on console. If you're playing on PC like I am... well, prepare to have "fun" with Origin.

As for spoilers, I don't really think the demo has that many. The introduction doesn't tell us anything we didn't know or weren't expecting (plus, I mean... it's just the beginning of the game). The second half of teh demo is a bit more spoilery, but there's very little context to it. The first half is like a story demo, while the second half is more of a gameplay demo.

If you're worried about spoilers, you can at least pick up the demo for the multplayer, which goes live on the 17th (or is available now if you registered a Battlefield 3 Online Pass). That should give you some insight into combat and the new MP features without spoiling anything.

Overall, it does mostly feel like ME2 refined to a closer-to-perfect state, but there's some definite improvements I love. The new talent system is great - it's a nice middle ground between ME1 and 2's ways of doing things, without forcing stats for things that don't need 'em, like weapons. Grenades are back for some classes, and are done closer to ME1 style rather than ME2 style )Infiltrators ahve Sticky Grenades! :D :D :D), and the new abilities for each class seem really cool so far. Also, Cryo Ammo seems to not be totally worthless, and the improvements to melee are awesome and make it a much more viable option.

The only real oddity I've found isn't really a negative so much as a "we really needed this?" kind of thing, and that's that they've gone back to ME1 style health - your suit no longer regens your health bar like it did in ME2, instead you have a segmented health bar that depeates when your health is gone, and when you duck into cover, it'll only regen the segment you're down to. The only way toregain all your health is to pop a Unity (which has simply been renamed to First Aid).

The only thing that's really pissed me off so far isn't really the fault of the game itself. It's more that the demo - and thuius probably the final game - launches directly from Origin itself rather than as a seperate program, which means even if I add it as a non-steam game to Steam, I won't be able to use the overlay or chat like I can with any other game ever. So, thanks for that, EA. If I wasn't so interested in multiplayer, I'd be cracking my copy the first chance I got. I'll miss being able to easily take screenshots and have them in my steam profile, like I did with ME1 and 2 :\

EDIT: Hearing not particularly good things about the multiplayer. copy/pasted from IRC:

[16:45] [@Ashilyn] ...damnit. I'm already hearing some kind of awful things about ME3's multiplayer. There goes that enthusiasm.
[16:47] [@Ashilyn] Apparently all the unlocks in game are completely random. So after you do a mission and you get credits for use in the in game store, you have to buy unlock packs (which are ranked as, like, "Recruit" or Veteren, ect, depending on cost). These gives you more items for your characters. ...except it's entirely random and you may not even get anyhting your class can use. You can't just go buy a shotgun for your vanguard or something.
[16:48] [@Ashilyn] On top of this //races// are based on unlocks too, I guess because they think people will never plays humans otehrwise. You get one free "pack" when you start, which may or may not include another race, and there's a small chance of unlocking more when you buy packs with credits
[16:49] [@Ashilyn] To make it worse, it sounds like these are preset race/class combinations too, because people are talking about getting 'Quarian Engineer" or "Asari Adapt" unlocks.
[16:51] [@Ashilyn] Which I guess also means that you probably don't get to select gender for any of them, which would be stupid particularly for Quarians, since we've seen male and female quarians.
[16:52] [@Ashilyn] Annoyingly, it sounds like teh core mechanics change for certain races too. Turians apparently can't do combat rolls or dodges, which makes NO SENSE AT ALL since that seems like basic military training. Apparently theyg et accuracy buffs instead.
[16:53] [@Ashilyn] A Krogan not being able to do rolls I could buy. Particularly since they have charge.
[16:53] [@Ashilyn] A turian, not so much.

There's really no chance in this going to Steam, is there?

I like my femshep's hair at least (the somewhat mid-length hair with the bangs swept to her right), but if I can trade it in for nice long hair and keep her face, sign me up.

Currently playing: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, Picross DS

None. Not unless EA and Valve both magically decide they don't like money anymore, which really won't happen. It won't even work with teh Steam Overlay.

Also, I got early MP access (you can earn it through a facebook app - http://apps.facebook.com/mass-effect/?ref=bookmarks&count=0&fb_source=bookmarks_apps&fb_bmpos=7_0 ). The actual MP is a ton of fun, but this unlock system is just awful. Items i can live with, but random race unlocks really, really sucks.

It's really weird how EA won't use Steam for DA2 and ME3, but they have no problems with putting KoA Reckoning on there.

ME and DA are flagship titles.  KoA is sort of a surprise hit, I think.

The demo seemed pretty cool.  But I don't know whether they are teasing playable Wrex, or if you actually GET playable Wrex.  I WANT WREX IN MY CREW DAMMIT!!!
