@Kyle's spoiler:
Crazy, yes, but also the natural progression of their relationship.

I don't always 'ship, but when I do I 'ship [the characters in that spoiler].

Also I don't think it's legit, but, we'll see!  As a 'ship it only works if that doesn't happen, mind you, otherwise it's just dumb dumb dumb.

"Robots having sex with humans" is a common sci-fi trope anyway. Wouldn't even be the first time that happened with a Tricia Helfer character!

I do have the game preordered and I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but I've really been apprehensive about some of the things I've been hearing.

Ashley's hair was down and she was wearing what looked like purple and black body armor. More like Miranda's outfit in fit though.

Yeah, it's more a deep V than any sort of "boob window."  That went away with the concept art.

And she puts on armour later in the game, if screenshots are any indication. I know a lot of people are complaining about Ashley being all sexified and some other bullshit that makes me roll my eyes, but it sounds like the explaination is that she's off duty when the reapers attack, and that's why she's not dressed to regulation.

Mostly, I'm just so fucking sick of people bitching about Bioware "ruining" Ashley by taking her and turning her from a bland and uninteresting looking soldier chick to a hot, badass soldier chick who wears her hair down and doesn't wear bulky Aliance clothing all the time. First of all, how is it that Ashley of all characters is getting a reaction that's literally the opposite of what the internet normally wants (which is "heh heh moar boobs"), secondly, god forbid they let her character and apperance evolve.  Her look doesn't change who she is, and I ahven't seen any evidence that her characterisation has changed at all. I'm convinced everyone just wants to get on the "let's hate biopware" bandwagon and is looking for anything and everything to complain about at this point. She's still a tough as nails soldier chick. It's just that in the two years and several months since ME1 she's decided to get the stick out of her ass a bit. I wasn't aware this was a bad thing.

...I do think the supposed heels on her armour are a bit much, but hardly worth caring about.

Also, the whole [spoiler pair of characters] thing shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone. If you paid any attention to their iteractions over ME2, it was the next logical step, and is certainly far from being uncommon in sci-fi. Again, people just want something - anything - to bitch about so they can get on this "hate bioware" bandwagon that started between the release of ME2 and Dragon Age 2. It's one of those things that goes on the list of "things that make me ashamed to be a gamer".

Yeah, the bitching about Bioware bandwagon has gotten really retarded. Typical internet "let's make a mountain out of a molehill" reaction.

I really wonder what the reaction to Dragon Age 2 would've been if it was the same exact game, but Internet Darlings Obsidian had their name slapped on it instead. The fanboys would probably be slobbering over how it "advances the genre" or some other garbage.

Thirded on the Bioware bitching.  BioWare spoiled us all with so many really good games that the expectations are way too high.  I really liked Dragon Age II.  It might be my favorite game of last year.  Of course, I'm not prone to severe hype backlash.  I tend to like things I expect to like.  But I suppose the point of the internet is to complain about minutae.

To be honest, I don't fully get the complaints about Dragon Age II.

Yes, the enviroments repeat a lot, but it's not like you ever move behind Kirkwall itself.  And to be honest, I think DA2 has probably the best cast of characters I've ever played in a game.

And despite what people say, Party Micromanagement is still required quite a few times.

Some of it comes down to taste. There's people who inexplicably find Dragon Age Origin's cast of Annoying Bitch Magic User, Stoic, Boring Warrior, Flirty Bisexual Bard, Flamboyant Assassin, Wise Old Crone Healer, Drunk Dwarf, Smart Alec Reluntant Hero, The Faithful Companion, Backstabbing Villain Who Gets A Second Chance, and whatever other thin D&D archtypes were in there (and I say that despite actually really, really loving Leliana and Shale) over the colourful, interesting, and memorable cast of Dragon Age 2. DA2 still had it's archtypes, but at least the game endeavoured to twist and develop them - Merrill and Anders in particular.

And you know what, as much as I disagree with that, at least I can get that. But the rest of the stuff that people get so upset about is just asinine. Like not being able to change party member armour - God forbid they give characters an iconic look that makes them more distinguishable and memorable, while eliminating unneeded micromangement. And on the Mass Effect front, people complain about how ME2 deemphasised the RPG elements - how, exactly? By elminating a TON of pointless stats that were there simply to have stats, like the weapon skills and charm/intimidate? By getting rid of a cumbersome and unweildly inventory system? ANd both games they complain about being dumbed down, in ME2 because the game moved to being a stricter cover shooter with regular shooting instead of "RPG shooting" - which just says "natural tightening and evolution of our basic, core gameplay mechanic is bad, as is eliminating useless stats". And in Dragon Age 2, it was "gameplay isn't tactical enough. I don't have to micromanage positioning my characters, they just jump or teleport where they need to be, and I can't zoom out all the way" - so, uh making the game smoother and less frustrating to play is dumbing down a game? They did a lot of things to DA2, sure, but dumbing down the gameplay was not it. I played that shit on Hard. It was plenty tactical.

And the thing is, if they went right back to the DAO or ME1 style for DA3 or ME3, people would just complain about there being too many useless stats, or it being too much like the old games. That's really the part that ruffles my feathers. People are complaining because they can, about things that are silly to be getting so up in arms about.

Anyway, I didn't mean to derail the thread. I've just been seeing a lot of Bioware hate lately because of ME3's impedning release, and now because Drew Karpyshyn just left Bioware, and it's been making me gnash my teeth angrily a lot because of how stupid it is.

I feel like I set off a powder keg with my last post. I wasn't really trying to start a Bioware hate-train. I've invested a hell of a lot of time into both Mass Effect games, and I've been looking forward to the third for a long time. By avoiding spoilers so completely, though, I can only really comment on the few things I have accidently stumbled across, most of which I found problematic. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy the game, though, and I'll most likely be replaying it many, many times like I did the first two games.

At the same time, though, I think it's irresponsible to write off all critisiscm of the game as just some kind of cool-kids Internet bandwagon. I think there are a lot of legitimate complaints to be made about the previous games and some of stuff in the previews for this game that shouldn't just be written off as being made-up for some sort of Internet crusade.

And I'm sorry, but I'm never going to stop criticizing just how awful and pandering Bioware's female character designs have gotten over the years. It is an almost universal problem in gaming, but some of the stuff in ME2 was just particualry bad. I resented having to pay money to put Miranda & Jack in costumes that weren't male gazey as all hell, (and I hated that I didn't have the same option for Samara). If Ashley is running around in heels with her cleavage hanging out during combat it is something that's going to actively bother me while I play the game.

Kyle: My rant wasn't directed at you. It just kind of built up from a catalyst in the particular topic mixed with existing frustration. That said, I don't write off all the complaints. Some of them are valid. But many of them are incredibly petty and reek of entitlement/bandwagon jumping, and it'll take a lot to convince me otherwise.

As for Bioware's female character designs ...eh? I see nothing wrong with any of the outfits in ME2 specifically, they were all fitting of the characters. Miranda is genetically engineered to be the perfedct woman, and is cocky as all hell. Of course she's going to show it off. Jack's a psychotic, antisocial woman with very few morals and a penchant for casual sex. Samara- well, a whole lot of Asari dress provocatively, I see no reason why she should be excluded. The designs are fairly in line with a lot of typical sci-fi design. And outside of Isabella being dressed like a slut (again, justified by characterisation), I can't think of anyone particularly bad off in DAO or DA2. I also think it's that DA and ME have less conservitive settings than Star Wars, or Jade Empire, or the Forgotten Realms, and they take advantage of that. Seems fine to me.

As for Ashley, she'll have armour. It's been in screenshots. Her deep cut outfit is only in the intro it  seems, and a varient of it is in the N7 CE apperance pack DLC. I've heard talk that her armour has  SPACE HEELS like you sometimes see in less realistic sci-fi designs, but that may have been concept art. If it does, that's silly, but not really enough to bother me personally. There's been a lot worse in fantasy armour and even modern costume design over the years.

If you want to talk about stupid gender stuff, let's talk about Jack being healed by Male Shepard's magical penis. That STILL pisses me off.

(Actually, let's not, I'm not actually trying to start an argument. Just thought I'd offer my thoughts as a rebuttal from my PoV is all)

If they made a Dragon Age 3 that was pure DAO with a new story, I would be all for it.  It wasn't perfect, but I've yet to play a perfect WRPG.  I'd rather keep the flaws than lose the things that made me love it so much.

I haven't played Dragon Age 2, but not because I don't think I'd like it.  Not every game I'd like is worth my time, and given the heights Western RPG's have reached, games in the genre have to do that much better to get my attention.  I'd rather save my money and get more playthroughs out of the great WRPG's I already have, or mix it up with an action/adventure game.  The big issue compared to the original is in terms of role-playing: apparantly having fewer choices and replacing the dialogue system with the wheel.  There are other smaller issues that don't exactly help, though, and not being able to change character appearance is one of them.  And why bring Anders back if you're going to change him so much?  Just make a new character.

I don't hate Bioware, and it remains to be seen whether EA will ruin them, but at the same time, I don't feel obligated to play and love everything they make.

Kyle: As I recall, you're a big fan of The Witcher games? Are you ok with the games treating their female characters as little more than sexual conquests? Because I personally find that a lot more troubling than Bioware giving its female designs curves and a little skin.

I mean, I like The Witcher. And I like Bioware's games. And that stuff doesn't really bother me as these games are power fantasies more than anything. Just trying to get a feel for your stance here.

Even at the weakest point (DA2) bioware has never release a bad product IMO. I still love reading TORtanic threads though. Why people want so bad for a game they never planed to play to fail is beyond me.

I could never get into Jade Empire. And their Sonic RPG for the DS was just plain bad, though I blame that more on the material they had to work with more than anything. Other than those two games I've enjoyed pretty much everything they've done from BG1 on (even NWN, which is probably the game I like least out of the games they made that I like), though I never played Shattered Steel.

The TORtanic stuff is hilariously petty and sad. Especially when TOR's actually doing pretty well.
