I tend to agree overall. If I pirate a game, if I go on the internet and convince even one person to buy the game, the gaming company has just made more money than they would have ever had I never pirated and just ignored the game altogether. You can't have everyone being a pirate, but some level of pirates is a good form of free advertising.

Case in point, radiant historia. I don't think I woulda have taken the risk to buy this game. but i pirated it, loved it so much, and I'm pretty sure i convinced at least 10 people on the internet to buy it. Who knows how many people they influenced to buy it too? Not to mention that after I pirated it I bought the game anyway. Lot of the reason I bought it is because I want a sequel and also for the nice soundtrack CD and add to my collection, things this article refers to as building a relationship with the pirate. There are downsides to gaming companies to piracy, but they completely ignore the advertising potential which may actually outweight the loss in whatever potential sales.

silently judging all of you

On the other hand, I'm the kind of pirate they hate.

You're not getting my money. Period. I've purchased precisely one single game in the past ten years, and only so I could play multiplayer, and only because a month of begging didn't convince the moderator to turn on the options that let me play with a pirate copy (Minecraft, if you're wondering). Otherwise, I'm saving my money for entertainment that is simply not possible to steal.

Fuck it, I don't care. Is my couple of dollars the sole difference between success and bankruptcy for a game company? If it is, so long, see you. Someone else will make be making games I want to play. If I want to do blow off the ass of a hooker and play some game, I see no reason why I should have to choose between them. I want them both. I'm selfish and greedy and more than happy to fuck over some faceless game company to get my jollies.

I use to torrent games a lil bit when i first finished school. But back then i was kinda new to computers so i didn't real;y know good places to get stuff from or anything like that so 99% of the stuff i got had viruses in them and really fucked up my PC. Then when i started working i stopped doing it. Rare occasions i did do it were really just to test the game out, see if i wanted to buy it. Only time i can remember where i actually downloaded a game with no intention to buy it was Borderlands. Then during a Steam sale i ended up buying it anyways.

Recently since i'm not working again i have pirated a few games. One of the games was Dead Island which i am now thinking of buying because the co-op looks like alot of fun.

Despite my pro-piracy rants, I don't really pirate that often. Mainly I pirated DS games from 2007-2011 (until I bought Radiant Historia) but I never really played that much of my DS and most of those games that I pirated I would not have bought. The exception is the Ace Attorney series, where I feel my piracy saved me ~$120-$140. Yay for me.

On the PC end, Steam sales have caused me to pirate very little. I have only pirated a few PC games in the past 5+ years.

In some places piracy is the only reason people can have games and programs at all.

Pretty much exactly this.
Ever since I got steam I haven't pirated a single PC game.
I've basically stopped playing console games so essentially, I don't pirate anymore. Except Snes games...but that's okay isn't it ?
