The government loans are pretty meager for most students. The private loan companies make a killing because of how ridiculous even public college tuition, room, and board is these days, much less private schools. And too many students fall into that category of "too poor to afford college on your own, and too rich to get substantial financial aid."

If you're really poor, you can get into college for near free if you're really smart or athletically gifted or receive a nice amount of financial aid. If you're rich, obviously, money isn't much of an issue and mommy and daddy can pay your way easily. If you're an average middle class American, you're fucked.
What if your parents are rich and don't want to pay? What do you do then? In my case, I had to wait until I was 25 to receive any assistance and spent every day since I was 18 living working shitty jobs trying to get ahead. There's no law that says your parents have to provide or cooperate.

THIS.

Also, it's a number's game that doesn't look a single bit at history. It's assumed if your parents are upper middle class when you're 18, they always have been and have a hefty college fund for you or are just going to pay out of pocket. They don't look at what was going on financially in the family for the first 17 years of your life.

Also, for some med schools (and I'm going to assume law and dentistry and other professional schools), they consider your parent's income REGARDLESS of your age. I'm 28 years old and my parents don't give me a single cent (because I'm 28 -- and I wouldn't ask for it anyway, as I don't feel they should be responsible for what I want to do with my life), but I still have to put their information down on my financial aid forms to even be eligible to be considered for aid. It's not that way with undergrad and grad school. I guess it's considered a family affair when its often not. It will be this way even if I got married and had a bazillion kids. It's pretty stupid.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned...what happens to the economy when all the money disbursed for student loans is simply wiped away? We would all take a terrible loss when the economy crashed and burned. You know, more than it already has.
I covered that when I compared the college loan bubble to the subprime mortgage market.

Seriously, this. My parents were pulling in +$100k between the two of them (and yes declaring bankruptcy all the while... fail) and wouldn't give me a single cent. Even though I was living off $6/hour at the time I still had to claim my parents income for financial aid but luckily I earned a full scholarship at the schools I wanted to go to. I'd only be an extra... 50k in debt since I went to an instate school but that would still suck.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.

$100k+ isn't rich. It's upper middle class. By rich I mean "millionaires."

Though I have to admit I didn't figure "parents being assholes" into the equation.

Yikes and away!

Or if your parents went through financial difficulty during the time you went to school and took out the loans. I went from both parents being employed and helping me pay my education when I started school as a freshman to both being unemployed and I taking out more loans to cover everything else by the time I entered my senior year. But when I filled out my FAFSA (god fucking hell, I HATED doing that piece of shit), it looked like my family was far better off than they actually were.

There's such a disconnect between numbers on a paper and actual reality. I understand that's incredibly difficult to grasp, especially with so many students, and so only so much government/school aid can give out. And that's when private loans come in for the kill.

Spidey
So Sigh Ety

The education system in general is fucked up, not only how the financial aid is distributed .Why does one have to pay so much just to get a certificate that says they can do something, when in reality when I go on the job almost nothing I learned in college I can actually apply to the job?

Somewhere along the line someone is making too much money and not teaching what people actually need to know. It's one thing to get into debt to learn something that'll help you in the job market, it's another thing to get into debt, and not be able to find a job because nobody wants to take the dive of training someone how to actually do the job. You can get strait As and work super hard through school and realize you aren't good at the job or don't like the job, and it's because of the huge disconnect between education/college and reality.

I understand the plight 100%, and folks deserve help for the mess they've been put in. And that help can come in the form of deferring payments and removing interest. But there is something fundamentally wrong with a society that gives free handouts without anything to gaurantee the debt to society (in this case taxpayers) would be paid back.

Man Crono, I can understand your parents wanting you to develop work ethic or earn your own path, but for them to not help out AT ALL is quite a bitch =/
