The private loan companies make a killing because of how ridiculous even public college tuition, room, and board is these days, much less private schools. And too many students fall into that category of "too poor to afford college on your own, and too rich to get substantial financial aid."If you're really poor, you can get into college for near free if you're really smart or athletically gifted or receive a nice amount of financial aid. If you're rich, obviously, money isn't much of an issue and mommy and daddy can pay your way easily. If you're an average middle class American, you're fucked.

What if your parents are rich and don't want to pay? What do you do then? In my case, I had to wait until I was 25 to receive any assistance and spent every day since I was 18 living working shitty jobs trying to get ahead. There's no law that says your parents have to provide or cooperate.

We would all take a terrible loss when the economy crashed and burned. You know, more than it already has.

There's no law that says your parents have to provide or cooperate. THIS.Also, it's a number's game that doesn't look a single bit at history. It's assumed if your parents are upper middle class when you're 18, they always have been and have a hefty college fund for you or are just going to pay out of pocket. They don't look at what was going on financially in the family for the first 17 years of your life. Also, for some med schools (and I'm going to assume law and dentistry and other professional schools), they consider your parent's income REGARDLESS of your age. I'm 28 years old and my parents don't give me a single cent (because I'm 28 -- and I wouldn't ask for it anyway, as I don't feel they should be responsible for what I want to do with my life), but I still have to put their information down on my financial aid forms to even be eligible to be considered for aid. It's not that way with undergrad and grad school. I guess it's considered a family affair when its often not. It will be this way even if I got married and had a bazillion kids. It's pretty stupid.
