DC brought back Resurrection Man and they did it RIGHT.

All past transgressions have been forgiven.

So is Grant Morrison done with Batman? I was glancing through solicit for the Batman relaunches and I don't think I saw his name anywhere.

Batman: Leviathan Strikes is a giant sized comic coming out in December that covers all the information in Batman Inc #9 and 10 and it comes along with a lot of new stuff.

"Grant Morrison is back on BATMAN INCORPORATED for a giant-sized one-shot called LEVIATHAN STRIKES. Gotham’s greatest detective will learn that there’s more to his deadly foe than meets the eye. So what is the Leviathan’s shocking secret? We’re not saying…but for now, we’ve got a first look at the cover by Chris Burnham.

“The long-awaited conclusion to season 1 of BATMAN INCORPORATED is here at last!” said Morrison. “For months, Batman and his allies have fought a shadow campaign against the deadly legions of the mysterious Leviathan, but now it’s time for all-out war – a war which Batman may not be able to win. Schoolgirl assassins! Bat-robots! Nazi masterminds with Alzheimer’s! Guest stars galore! Batman and Spoiler team to face the School of Night while Batman Incorporated travels to a sinister Cold War interrogation facility to face the mind-bending menace of Doctor Dedalus for the last time while the true identity of Leviathan is finally revealed, with shocking consequences for the Dark Knight. With incredible artwork from Cameron Stewart (BATMAN AND ROBIN MUST DIE) and Chris Burnham (BATMAN INC.), LEVIATHAN STRIKES! rounds out season 1 and is also the prologue to 2012’s BATMAN: LEVIATHAN – the epic, tragic, final act of a story six years long.”

And then Leviathan starts in January.

"Of Christ's twelve Apostles Judas alone proved to be traitor. But if he had acquired power, he would have represented the other eleven Apostles as traitors, and also all the lesser Apostles whom Luke numbers as seventy." - Leon Trotsky

I have a blog. This is its URL. You should read it. It's about education and skepticism and books and it has a lot of pictures of Batman and Robin in it: https://baldermoon.wordpress.com/

DC has been kicking ass today. Birds of Prey and Nightwing were both awesome. Nightwing really feels like it'll be building on what Scott Snyder has been doing with Dick over the past year.

And then there's Batman. So far the best book fo the relaunch. Exceeded my high expectations. I haven't been this excited about a Batman run... Ever, I don't think. Between what Snyder wrote in Detective before, and what he said he plans to do with Bruce in the DCnU, I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being every bit as good as the early 00's Batman when Brubaker and Rucka were in charge of things.

Best of the relaunch is still definitely Demon Knights, but the Batbooks we got this week are pretty far up there. Batman was incredible, and the way it's tying into Nightwing is really cool. Not to mention that I'm glad Snyder is still playing up the detective angle, even though he isn't writing Detective Comics anymore. I knew going in that I was going to love Red Hood, but goddamn was it ever great. I love the way that Roy and Jason play off of each other. Nightwing was surprisingly good too, even though I still think it was a mistake to take Dick out of the Batsuit.

Also picked up Green Lantern Corps, whose direction is really great with Guy and John trying to figure out their place in the Corps after War of the Green Lanterns, and Blue Beetle was great too. I love how most of the book is devoted to Jaime's friends and family, rather than superheroics, since Jaime is a lot like Buddy in that the real meat of who he is centers around the people he cares about.

All in all, the books that I picked up were fantastic. I just wish that there weren't so many great books, since money necessitates that I can't buy EVERYTHING DC's putting out, which I almost want to do.

Reading some Batman: REBORN era Streets of Gotham, specifically House of Hush, and I have to say I'm growing more and more fond of Tommy Elliot.

Also Alfred is awesome. I've heard rumors that NuAlfred might or might not be an AI. That would be singularly stupid.

I was bored so I wrote down my thoughts on everything I read from the new 52, now that I've gotten all the comics I wanted from it (and a few that I didn't and picked up anyway):

Justice League - Nothing particularly great. Loved the art and I'll probably stick around for a few issues, but overall pretty boring and forgettable. It's honestly kind of hard to give a shit about Hal Jordan and he was half the issue. I do like the way Johns writes Batman, and Jim Lee's art is always welcome.

Action Comics - Didn't like it. As expected, really. Don't like Superman, don't like Grant Morrison. Kind of glad for that, it means that both of them are well off my radar in the DCnU (save Morrison's Batman: Leviathan limited series). Don't see myself reading anything past #1 here. Morales did a good job drawing it, though.

Animal Man - Surprisingly good first issue. I wasn't a fan of Morrison's Animal Man and didn't like him in 52 either, but apparently this one ties into Swamp Thing pretty heavily so I got it after I read that. And you know what? Really fucking good. Definitely something I want to keep up with. Wish the art was better, though.

Batgirl - Better than expected. I knew I shouldn't have doubted Gail Simone but conceptually this comic had so much going against. Still, it was fun, well-written, and generally just a good comic. No reason not to read it just because Stephanie isn't Batgirl and Barbara is. Also, congratulations to Gail Simone for being the first pwerson to ever make Barbara as Batgirl even remotely fun.

Detective Comics - Why is Tony Daniel allowed to write? I like his art but even that didn't feel quite up to par with his stuff from a couple years back. Won't be coming back for more.

Men of War - I wasn't sure what was going on or why I should care. Also, everything was boring. Probably the worst comic of the reboot. It couldn't even make me hate it. I just plain didn't care about anything here. At least Red Hood and Suicide Squad got an emotional rise out of me. I've already forgotten roughly everything about this comic.

Stormwatch - Fuck yeah Stormwatch. I'm a huge fan of Wildstorm and the Authority so it's nice to see them make their way into the DCU proper. Not all that inviting to new readers but since I'm not one I already knew all the concepts it dealt with and could just enjoy the hell out of it. Also, Midnighter's entrance was great. Best pickup line ever.

Swamp Thing - Grabbed this because I love Scott Snyder. I honestly don't give a shit about Swamp Thing, never read anything with him before. So it was hard to give a damn about the main character. But the writing was good and it looks to be setting up for something big. I liked all the stuff going on in the background more than the stuff dealing with the MC whose name I can't remember (REALLY wasn't joking when I said I know fuck-all about Swamp Thing), but it was all interesting enough to keep me reading. Snyder knows how to make atmosphere work for him, and he did it so well here I'm gonna keep reading.

Batman and Robin - Mediocre comic at best. Bruce and Damian bickered a bit, but it wasn't all that fun. Still, I'll give it a few more issues. It's got room to grow.

Batwoman - Fantastic. The art alone made it worth the long, long wait for this series to launch. Also the writing was good. Glad to see Cameron Chase around in the reboot. And here's hoping Renee's history with Kate (including the stuff where she's the Question) stays intact. Looks like it might.

Demon Knights - I'm not one for swords and sorcery and all the D&D type stuff, but I am a fan of Paul Cornell and so I grabbed this one. It was fun. Really fun. In fact, probably the most fun comic of the new 52. Also, amazing art.

Green Lantern - You know how to make a comic insanely boring? Make it about Hal Jordan. I put up with him for a while because while he's Green Lantern he's not too bad, but the only way to be more boring than civilian Hal Jordan is to be Barry Allen or John Stewart. I know Geoff Johns is madly in love with the guy but I find it impossible to care. On the other hand, loving Sinestro's story. A lot. A whole lot. I don't think anyone writes the guy better than Johns does, and I'm gonna keep on reading GL mostly for him.

Grifter - Interesting. I like stories that feel like they start in the middle. This one wasn't a great hook that got me really interested, but the potential is there, and the character is cool enough. I'll give it a few issues and see where things go.

Red Lanterns - Loved it. Even if it was mostly introspective angst, I like the development it's giving Atrocitus. And lots of Bleez is never a bad thing. I like the premise of her trying to take over the Red Lanterns. Also, Ed Benes on art is a huge selling point.

Resurrection Man - YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!

Suicide Squad - NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Superboy - Meh. It's trying to be interesting but mostly failing. I may stick with it a few issues because I like Rose Wilson and Caitlin Fairchild in the old continuities, but mostly it was mediocrity attempting to be good and not quite making it.

Batman - Good start to things. The art is a little iffy - some panels are gorgeous and others don't look very good - and some of the villain redesigns aren't very good (Riddler), but the writing is amazing. It picked up after Snyder's Detective Comics run, so it's great to know that that's all still canon. The Batman books have been good about keeping all the stuff that happened before intact so far, and I like that. Great setup, great writing, Scott Snyder is god-tier, etc etc. I loved this comic.

Birds of Prey - Fun fun fun. Three words that describe everything I've read by Duane Swierczynski, actually. Birds of Prey #1 felt a lot like the first few chapters from one of his novels so I'm hopeful. The scene with Barbara was a low point, though. It felt kind of pointless. Everything else was exciting, fast-paced, and had the two main characters being established as awesome asskickers. Starling is a fun new character. Sticking with this one for sure.

Blue Beetle - Didn't I just read Jaime's origin story five years ago? Do I need to read it again? Apparently. Only this time the writing wans't nearly as fun. I don't know what to do about this comic. I love me some Jaime and I'm glad he has a comic and I want to read it, but I wasn't thrilled with the first issue. Great art, though. I guess I'll give it a few more issues before I decide to drop it or stick with it.

Catwoman - I hate Judd Winick. I love Guillem March. Horrible writing that felt like it was pissing on a character I've come to love lately since reading Ed Brubaker's run on Catwoman. Unfortunately nothing that made her a good character in that was anywhere near Winick's Catwoman. I'll probably grab it to look at the pretty pictures but I doubt I'll actually be reading Catwoman in the comic months.

Green Lantern Corps - Boring as hell. I like the GL mythos so I'll give it a few more issues, but the first one didn't hook me in.

Nightwing - Very good. Higgins is doing a good job of continuing with Dick where he and Snyder left off before the reboot. I had fun with this one. And of all the revamped designs, I think Dick's is among the best, so it's cool to look at. I wish he was still Batman but I'll take a good Nightwing story too.

Red Hood and the Outlaws - See Catwoman. Hate Scott Lobdell. Love Kenneth Rocafort. Will get it for the art, probably will not be reading it, etc etc. Same deal here. I wasn't a fan of Starfire in the old continuity, Jason was a very hit and miss character, and I didn't know Roy. So I got this book for the art alone to begin with. Starfire's new characterization is cringeworthy and Jason and Roy aren't too much better. How does Lobdell keep finding work?

Supergirl - The one interesting Super____ comic of the bunch. Which was shocking, since I hate Supergirl. Or hated her. She might be awesome in the DCnU. I like Asrar's art and that he wasn't doing digital coloring for this comic so I picked it up based on that and was pleasantly surprised by the writing. I loved the idea that she landed on earth and treated the whole thing like a dream. I'll be sticking with it unless Supergirl starts acting like an idiot like she was pre-reboot, at which point it's abandon ship time.

Wonder Woman - And Brian Azzarello may soon join the prestigious society of awesome writers who completely fail at making Wonder Woman even remotely interesting. He'd be in good company with Greg Rucka and Gail Simone. I think I'll grab a few more issues just because I want to see how someone like Azzarello writes someone like Wonder Woman (she wasn't in the issue much), but my hopes aren't high, despite being a huge Azzarello fan. Hopefully rebooting Wonder Woman will make her worth reading about.

Batman: The Dark Knight - Yawn. Aside from some good art there wasn't anything special about this book. As expected considering the pre-reboot Dark Knight comic was the same way. It wasn't actively bad but it sure as hell wasn't very good. Possibly the most soulless issue of Batman I've ever read. It just lacked any kind of personality at all. Like the comic book version of a term paper or something. "These are the things that happened" with no real meat or character to it.

Fury of Firestorm - One big meh. Guess not EVERYTHING Gail Simone writes will be gold. Liked the art enough, though. Fun villains. But it's Firestorm, and I've never been able to find a reason to care about Firestorm. This issue didn't give me one.

Green Lantern: New Guardians - If this book stays about Kyle I will love it forever. Good first issue. Ending definitely has me wanting to read more. And Tyler Kirkham's art is amazing. Definitely the best Lantern comic of the bunch, but I'm slightly biased since I really like Kyle.

I, Vampire - Not a bad start. Great fit between the writing and the art. Not the best thing I ever read, but worth checking out a few more issues for sure.

Justice League Dark - Good start to things. I seem to like stuff like this, Swamp Thing, and Animal Man that start things off with some kind of huge crisis that isn't supervillain-based. Really dark looking art that I felt was a good fit, and quite pretty.

Teen Titans - The New 52 seems to really love team books that only introduce two characters. First Justice League, then Birds of Prey, and now Teen Titans. This one wasn't that great. Gorgeous art, and the writing isn't as bad as Lobdell's other books, but it was just aggressively mediocre. Did nothing to stand out and say "read more of me!" Not a fan of the rebooted Red Robin, either. I was hoping his solo series would have stuck but I guess it didn't.

Voodoo - Extremely good. A little bit expositiony but it does it pretty well and the last few pages definitely pick things up and set up for what could be a really good story. So basically a typical Ron Marz way to start things off. This is nothing but a good thing. He's one of my favorite writers and didn't disappoint me with this one. Also, Voodoo has the best art of anything in the new 52. I've been a fan of Sami Basri for years and this is far and away the best I've seen him draw. Of all the heavily changed characters, I think she's probably gonna end up being the best. Has a kind of Witchblade feel to it, which I was hoping for since I'll need something to fill the void when Ron Marz leaves Witchblade in a couple issues.

Dude, you didn't get All Star Western or Superman, but you got The Dark Knight and Suicide Squad?

What the fuck.

I wanted to read all the Batman books to see where he was in continuity. Unfortunately most of them weren't good so I'll probably just be reading Snyder's. Suicide Squad I didn't want to write off simply because the characters look different. But now I'm writing it off because the writing was horrible.

Didn't see a reason to get All-Star Western since I never got into Jonah Hex and the Gray/Palmiotti writing team isn't an instant sell for me. And the fundamental flaw with Superman is that it stars Superman. I grabbed Action mostly because I needed to kill some time and didn't have too much to read that week. I've got a lot to read this week so I don't need a Superman comic to kill time.

One of the reasons for the new 52 is to get more people interested in old characters. Get All Star Western and read it. Twice.
