So I've given myself a personal challenge this year--keep 3 art projects going at all times throughout the year. When I finish one, I have to start another, and constantly be brainstorming new things to do. And, to help keep me going, I'm going to try to document a bunch of the stuff I'm working on here, as well as get advice, feedback, ideas, etc. So without further ado, the first of the projects I'm going with, with details on the others to follow as time goes on:

Slaps (sticker art)

The first thing I'm working on, as I mentioned in the post your picture thread, are slaps--sticker art that you can slap up anywhere. Right now, I'm working on cheap name tag labels, as better quality and more durable blanks can be really expensive. A lot of people will use slaps as "throw ups"--a quick way to tag their name without having to have a stencil or paint on them. I say "fuck that." All of my slaps are unique pieces and don't have any name on them, because I really don't give a shit to have some stupid street name attached to what are, in the end, goofy little stickers on a wall.

Speaking of which, here are some of the goofy little stickers I've made:

I've made somewhere in the realm of 50 stickers so far, and the styles and content of the art varies pretty wildly across them. This sort of low-stakes, quick art is a great way to experiment and play around with different styles and genres or explore techniques you don't usually employ. For instance, I pretty much suck at cross-hatching for shading and depth, but with these I can just dick around with it and not have to invest half an hour or more into a drawing I'm ultimately going to hate.

That's the first of many ideas I've got floating around in my head right now. What do you think? Feel free to post in this thread with anything you're working on or ideas that you'd like to brainstorm, etc.

Yep, still gaming

I really like your style, it's different and very distinguishable, I guess I could call it... once you've seen it, you recognize it anywhere.

I'm into woodcarving now, but my "art' takes for ever to be finished, I'll post the next one I finish.

So many of you have artistic pursuits, I'm surprised no one has posted in here, yet.

Yeah, it's odd to me, too. I'm picking up some tools tomorrow to get started on a few projects. I'll post pictures of my progress on them once I get started.

I have never heard of slaps before now. I think it's a really cool idea. I used to love stickers as a kid. I think that these have a lot of potential from a business standpoint. There could be an untapped market with the teen audience if marketed right. I never knew you were artistic. That's pretty cool. I also remember you used to have real talent on your poetry. Have you written anything else?

So I made a box:

I made it for a friend of mine. She had a brother named Matthew that died six years ago, and his birthday is coming up soon. She's an artist and her inspiration and motivation for making art comes largely from him and her faith. I made this box to hold art supplies and so I lined the inside with pages from the book of Matthew so when she goes to get paints or what-have-you, she'll be reminded of where her heart and inspiration comes from. Maybe it's cheesy or maybe it's sweet, I don't really know. But it was fun to make and I learned a lot. I've never made anything like this, so the experience was definitely humbling and enlightening.

Here it is with all the doors open:

And now, on to the next thing!
