Ways to speed up a slowing down computer.

I'm not very tech savy so when it comes to things like certain computer programs eating up too much ram I'm not really sure how to make my computer run smoothly.
Lately I have been noticing an issue with firefox. I have 8 gbs of ram on my computer but firefox alone can get up to running at 500 mbs which when combined with everything else running can get my computer using up 4 to nearly 5 gbs of ram which is a lot of memory to be using in my opinion. Is there a way to make firefox not use up so much ram?
Are there other ways to get your computer running faster? Such as getting rid of uneccesary programs that might be running in the background that you don't need?

It's that simple? Why is that?

I find Firefox can become really bogged down if you're running too many addons with it - try disabling some crappy ones you don't use much, if at all. It can become really bloated with useless crap (not harmful usually though, but just memory hogs that you can do without).

How many and which extensions are you running with firefox? Some of them can gobble up a lot of RAM. Other than that, try clearing out your cache/history/cookies.

Other ideas:

- Run Disk Cleanup. You can get rid of a lot of junk files floating around that you don't need anymore.

- Run your Malware/Spyware program of choice, like Spybot S&D and Malwarebytes.

- Kill any processes from programs you don't need to run.

I ran malwarebytes and it came out clean so I don't think it's malware.
You guys might be right about the extensions and addons in firefox.
Do you guys know how clean that stuff out? Im kind of at a loss when it comes to that.

Holy crap your Firefox only runs around 500mb?

Serious answer, flash and javascript is what makes Firefox eat ram.  You could disable those, but then you'd lose half the internet.  Easier answer, kill Firefox and restart regularly.

Even more serious answer:  Superfetch is populating your free RAM with cached copies of the programs you use the most.  This is the way Windows is supposed to work.  Your instincts from back in the day of Windows XP are wrong.  Nothing is wrong here, move along.

Another good program is CCleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner, it can clean up crap on your computer that has been sitting around for awhile and also fix some Registry issues.  Other then that I would do the standard virus/malyware/spyware cleanup as well as checking what programs you have running and removing ones you don't need.  5GB useage is pretty high, uninstalling old programs can help.  if you are running an older version of windows manually doing disk cleanup and defrag can help as well.

Windows 7 and above works how SC laid it out.

Firefox has become as slow and bloated as the browsers it was trying to replace.

Try chrome, see if it's any better. If it's not, then I would suggest running through the other steps listed. If you're using win7 and it's not already  doing  it, set up some scheduled defrag, etc. I think I've got it firing off once a week at 1 in the morning or something like that.

Don't use Norton anything, that shit eats memory like a mother. Use AVG free if you really want some virus thing besides win7's built in.

I strongly recommend ditching any antivirus saving Microsoft Security Essentials.  it's the only free one I've found in the past few years that isn't a complete piece of shit.  If you want to throw money at the problem, Kapersky and NOD32 are good stuff too.

(IIRC, the first time I heard someone bitching about Superfetch was back when Vista was first released.  I think they eased off on it with Win7, it was tuned a little too aggressive in Vista.  And yeah, I was bitching about it too - time has proved me wrong, though.)

(I really want to install Chrome.  But not being able to move my tabs to a less stupid place than on the very top (why mince words) so it's set up precisely like Firefox 3 was which is the one goddamned true way to lay out a browser all other opinions are wrong and should burn like the heretics they are *ahem* has proven to be my breaking point.)

It may seem drastic, but maybe do a complete format of your PC and reinstall windows, then install Chrome. My old PC was running like crap ages ago and it was suggested to me to just reinstall windows. had no idea what i was doing so i asked here. Once i was done it was like the PC was brand new.

Apart from that, yeah Chrome.

I use Avast for antivirus. It's free and pretty low profile. Doesn't gobble up much in the way of resources and I haven't gotten any viruses, so it's probably doing its job.
