Is there any interest out in the interwebs for watching specialized playthroughs. Take an FFVIII god run with minimum level characters, or an ocarina of time 3 heart challenge.. If I were to do one of these, that's the kind that I would find the most interesting to do.

Let's Player

I can see these attracting the hardcore gaming target audience. I wouldn't really know much about it though 'cause I have never tried recording anything like that :D

My most recent 3 let's plays:

Zelda: Oracle of Seasons - Link (Din, Onox, Maku...I'm so funny)
Killer7 (Completed) - Link
Luigi's Mansion (Completed!) - Link

Definitely. I know of a couple LPers who have done the original Legend of Zelda with three hearts. Let's Plays have taken off quite a bit recently so anything you can do to make yourself stand out from everyone else would be great. I would definitely recommend doing a practice run before doing a special challenge like a 3-heart run of Ocarina of Time, just to make sure you can pull it off with minimum mistakes/deaths. Maybe practice doing commentary while playing as well, if you intend to do commentary, since that can be distracting at times. I still fumble over my words a lot, though not nearly as much as I used to.

But yeah, if you're really interested and commited to making it to the end of the game, I say go for it. Good luck!

To the question, I'm going to say that for me, specialized playthroughs are pretty much the only kind of Let's Play videos that really interest me.

No knocks against anyone that does the regular playthroughs and the like, I'm sure there's an audience for that sort of stuff out there. It's just that for me, I don't really see the point or gain enjoyment from watching someone play a game that I've already played.

The only 'normal' playthroughs I've really gotten into are to check out games that I'm thinking about giving a try or if the commentary is awesome/hilarious.

Some examples are probably things like Psystarcraft (I find him pretty unpredictable/hilarious) and the early Mack and Mesh videos.

Other than that, as Fenix said, there are a lot of Let's Play videos out there so anything you can do to stand out from the pack is always nice.

In specialized RPG playthroughs, it will take multiple takes to complete some of the battles, because even the best strategies can be partially dependent on luck. Take FFVI minimum level playthroughs. Getting past bosses like Atma Weapon and Dullahan requires favorable outcomes from the random number generator because you need to have defenses in place for the most dangerous attacks, or manage to barely survive those attacks. Later fights are actually pretty easy due to the powerful tools.

I'm assuming you can clean up this messiness by splitting the episodes appropriately.

Zelda is a much more deterministic format where enemy behavior is very predictable. That's just skill really.

Genitals are Funny

for me LPs need to be one of 2 things. Informative or hilarious. I'd never watch an LP of FF7 because i have played and finished it so many times and gotten everything in it. But i am watching an LP of Farcry 3, a game i have played and finished because they guy playing it is hilarious.

If you are very informative in your LP in what you are doing, i think they'd be popular.

Another thing, be yourself.  The interwebs can spot a phony from 77 trillion miles away. So if you're boring be boring, but informative.

For dealing with multiple takes against a specific RPG boss, like say Atma Weapon, it is pretty easy to splice your gameplay footage so your approach to the battle will lead into the recording you want to use for the video. I try not to talk during battle transitions if I can help it, just in case things go too badly to keep the battle in the episode, or in the case of random encounters, so I can easily chop them out without having to mess around with my commentary audio as much. That way, in the event of doing multiple takes, you won't have to worry about cutting your prebattle commentary off to fit in your explanation of the battle or whatever it is you wish to talk about during the fight.

If you want your specialized playthrough to be informative, your best bet is to save the commentary until after you've edited the video together. That way, you can talk about strategy without the stress of doing it live or having to edit out a bunch of times where you ended up going "oh fuck, I didn't mean to do that".

Makes sense. How do you go about recording, anyway?

When the PS4 comes out apparently directly on the console, that should be interesting to see.

^ That would definitely be convenient if that is the case.

Anyway, Atma, for my FFV and FFIV Let's Plays, I use emulators that have a built-in recording feature. I have the emulator record the gameplay while I have my commentary audio recorded using Audacity, then after I finish my session, I have the emulator replay the gameplay footage and set it to convert the footage to AVI files. It's a bit time consuming, especially if you play for a fairly long period of time, but I haven't had any issues with it yet.

Other games I've recorded, like Mega Man X or Super Mario Bros. 3, I did via the Wii using A/V splitters and the Pinnacle Dazzle capture device. You don't have to replay the footage to convert it into an audio/video file type you can work with with this method, which is nice.  But I have had some issues in the past, of losing frames during recording at times for reasons I'm not entirely sure of. Also, PSP recording does not come out very clear using this method I've learned recently, much to my frustration. I was hoping to do Persona 3 Portable for my next Let's Play series, but that will have to wait for another time.

There is an LP out there of a super sequence broken FFVI run through which has a dedicated audience.  In my mind the quality of an LP comes down to the quality of the commentary, but with loads of leet knowledge I imagine you'd have plenty of interesting things to say on a god-run of FFVIII.

+1. I was about to post the exact same comment.
