FFI, forever. It's still one of the best FF's overall, not just the best on the NES.

Call me contrarian, but FF3j is by far my favorite of the NES FF games. I played the ROM a couple years before the DS version was announced, but even for an NES game, it felt pretty ahead of its time. Also, its delicious gameplay would go on to mutate into FF5's job system. Glad to have savestates, though, for those times when you get back-attacked by six demons halfway through the last dungeon which has no save points and end up getting massacred on the first turn.

FF3j is the only NES FF even remotely playable for me, it was pretty good, but I'm not a fan of the DS remake at all.
Basically exactly everything tenk said!

World Warrior 21007
FF3j. Even if its job system is primative compared to later entries, it's still easily the most playable NES FF.

I was interpreting it as "the best FF that started on the NES". If we're going by NES versions, III is my favorite by a landslide.

Pirate.
FFI was the first I played and it was an amazing innovation.

FFI - the one that started it all!
Now, as I look back I see the crooked path that I had been set upon all those years before, leading me inexorably to this moment. I can still see her face in my mind's eye, poor dear Laura, such a sad tale is ours. A tale of heroes who strove to save humanity only to lose our own.

Crono
Crono can cross dimensions too!
I never played through any original version of the 3 but the only one I've ever wanted to replay (and have) was the first game so I'll go with that.
Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

The King's orders are absolute
If we're going by NES versions, FFIII even though I never finished the game. If we're going by updated ports and such, ...FFII. Not by very much.
Let's Play Chrono Trigger
Let's Play The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past
Let's Play Final Fantasy VI

FFIII. I think it was the first that pulled all the classic staples together into one game. FFI and FFII were when Square was still trying to find out what the series was going to be like. It was like, when they came around to FFIII, they said, "Eureka, I think we've got it!!".

On the NES, FFIII. Best remake, however is FFI Origins.
