And it was successful.

What do you guys think? Will this change or affect the way the world views guns?

Ban 3D printers, they cause terrorism.

I think the guy who made it is a bit nutty.

You know what's freaky?

We're not too far off from a Star Trek replicator at this point ...

Just need to combine this with nanotechnology and presto!

Guns don't kill people, people with 3D printers kill people.

What I'm afraid of is that an awesome technology such as this would now be strictly controlled because of shit like this.

Ugh.

Yeah, I wouldn't touch this thing.  A plastic barrel and firing chamber?  Are you fucking kidding me?  One shot, maybe, but I guarantee after that everything that contained pressure has enough stress cracking that the whole thing is going to explode in your hands with the second shot.  There is a reason why the action and barrel are steel in a real gun.  And what's to stop someone from loading +P ammo and blowing it up on the first shot?  Let alone the simple fact of plastic deformation and miscalibrated printers leading to wild inaccuracy - I don't like the significantly huge risk this thing has of shooting something other than your target!

I mean, goddamn, I'm the biggest proponent of responsible gun use this forum has, but this entire fucking retarded concept is beyond the pale.

Gun control is an issue of the past. It's moot. We live in the opening stages of the post-modern sci-fi future we were sold as kids, and we might as well just get used to it.

My wild and crazy prediction is that cheap, efficient 3D printers are the next evolutionary step for our culture after the internet. They may very well be a path toward post-scarcity. 3D printing could make megastores like WalMart obsolete. Unfortunately, that means the occasional moron will use the technology to do something stupid, just like with every other technological advance in human history, ever.

One shot is usually all it would take to assassinate someone though. I doubt anyone here thinks someone would 3D print a gun to use in prolonged combat, at least until they get better materials.

I am trying to see the more practical applications of a 3D printer, but of course someone comes along to provide less than ideal uses. And I guess it is completely legal to construct your own firearm so unless that law is changed I don't see this being a regulated industry.

Well, as far as "practical," it's not just about what 3D printers can do right now. Think about what they'll be capable of five or ten years from now, when we can all afford n-th generation models that use more resilient and customizable materials, and when you want/need something you used to have to go to the store and buy, all you have to do is get on the internet, select from one of probably millions of downloadable blueprint files (many of them probably open-source and completely free) and hit print. It'll be kind of neat and hopefully cut down on a lot of pollution from factories, traffic from stores, etc. in the long run.

One shot yes, but as SoCo pointed out, this thing is less reliable than a musket, and 137x more likely to kill the user than what it's been aimed at.
