 Pretty much the only advice I can give at this point is to see a professional, though.  It still might be fixable, but it's going to be something obscure.

 Heh, refer me to a professional... yeah, these damn computers and their mysteries.  Ah well, it's all moot now, a friend has procured us a motherboard, i3 3320 3.3GHz CPU and 8 gigs of RAM for $100.  Hooray!  Now I just hope all my ancient peripherals are still compatible.
