They are going to be offering video games as part of Qwikster, so to me this is actually a better deal than what they had before!! I dropped my DVD part of the subscription as soon as I heard the news (I rarely use it anyway) so it's actually a great deal for me to get movie streaming + video game rentals for their monthly fee.

Um, the video games will be part of Quikster's DVD rental, not Netflix's streaming.

I was already planning on DVD-only, so this won't change much for me.
Yeah I know that. but look at it from my perspective for someone using both Qwikster and Netflix streaming. "Why am I paying more money to get the same thing I was paying only 8.99 a month a year ago? Oh it's because i also get to rent video games now. Ok sweet, since i can rent games and beat them without buying them I'm actually saving more money in the long run thanks to the new netflix plan"

Not defending netflix, because not everyone is in my boat, but just saying personally this new pricing plan/what you get out of it is great for me.

I've been a member of Netflix for about 5 or 6 years, before the streaming and blu-rays, and even then their pricing was fair and customer service was top-notch.  They offered a lot of the Indian movies and anime that I wanted (this was before I got into torrents, etc), and had an amazing stock of older movies that put any other provider to shame, so when the new price changes came not too long ago I didn't complain.  I felt the price I was paying before was a great deal, and the new higher prices were still fair for what I was getting.

They upped the prices a second time, but I didn't get pissed because their streaming was 100 times better than it used to be (when it first started they had pretty much only old movies and stuff I've never even heard of).  I've finally gotten internet hooked up at home, so I ditched the DVD service that I so loved and went exclusively streaming since there are tons of tv series, anime, recent movies, and even a few Bollywood films available.  The pricing was sort of a factor, but it was more a matter of the internet service adding a new monthly bill and since I had to cut costs I figured I had pretty much seen all the movies I wanted that weren't avaiable on streaming for the time being.

The news about video games being added got me interested.  I won't touch GameFly after hearing about how long the shipping takes (my little brother who lives about an hour away says his take about 3-4 days one way, whereas Netflix has always been a next-day service for me), so I'm hoping there will be a good deal when it gets here.

Gamefly just doesn't have enough distribution centers to keep up with Netflix (there are Netflix centers EVERYWHERE), and they have to* pay a lot more for shipping because the postal service had a specific deal with Netflix that saved them on shipping and handling.

*I can't remember, but this might have changed in the last year or so.

Netflix also had to pay a lot to USPS because of how awkward it was to ship the discs out.

I think they still do, actually.

Netflix definitely gets special treatment from USPS, which is why they can get away with just basically putting the discs straight in the sleeve then envelopes.

Gamefly discs are sleeved, then put in a thick cardboard insert to protect them, then into the envelope. They have to do this because the USPS treats their discs like every other pice of mail.

Honestly that's probably the way it should be--a game disc retails for 2-3 times as much as your average DVD, so it's more expensive to cover shipping breakage.

Crono can cross dimensions too!

Does anyone use Blockbusters service?  $10 a month and that includes DVDs, Blue Rays, AND video games.  If the selection is as good as netflix I'm freaking sold.  Plus there is a store a mile from me and they do direct exchanges apparently so I could potentially knock out 3 movies in a sick day or something.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

I had Blockbuster before for a couple months since they were right down the road from me and you could exchange in-store while you wait for your by-mail dvds to get there.  They weren't that cheap when I started, so I'm gonna check it out.  I do know that a little while after I moved and quit them, they had put a limit on how many in-store exchanges per month (something like only 5 or 6) which really sucked because like you said I could have really knocked out a few movies and tv series with a few days off from work.

I just checked BB's site and it says "most plans offer unlimited in-store exchanges."  Lookin' good so far.  Hell, it's cheaper than Gamefly so the only worry for DVDs or Games versus Netflix/Gamefly is selection.  Definitely going with a free trial next month.

Just for the games I'd do it in a heartbeat if I still lived near a Blockbuster.  But since the nearest Netflix shipping center is an hour away from where I live, I'll just wait and see what happens with that.

Dish Network bought Blockbuster and is keeping a lot of the previously closed stores open.

They're also offering streaming if you're a Dish Network customer as well.

EDIT: Netflix: Our bad.

And the drama that is Qwikster has come to an end, as Netflix, in an attack with sanity, as decided that having the two websites to be competely stupid and will stick with just the one.

No change in price, but as I'm streaming only, it doesn't really mean anything to me.  Still, in a way, this is as much as loss for Netflix as it is a win for the consumer, but in different ways.  One is the likely strategy they had to phasing out DVDs entirely.  It'll likely be harder for them to do that, if they wished it.  Another is streaming content.  Let's be honest, the distributors are a bunch of hardasses, and getting the content to stream in a short time frame would be lucky on their account.

This, that's my opinion, but now we can finally put this thing to rest.
