"The Ubuntu Edge is the next generation of personal computing: smartphone and desktop PC in one state-of-the-art device."

4 GB RAM
128 GB Hard Drive
Looks nice, I'm in for one. They're cheaper if you get them now. Hopefully they hit their goal. (Pretty tall order though.)

That could be really cool if they can manage that goal. $32M is a hefty sum to go looking for.

Looks like just about every other Linux thing I've ever dealt with. Oh look I put Linux on here! It's really neat! Oh you want to do something? Let me dual boot into __________. In this case, Android apparently.

Didn't Motorola do pretty much the same thing with the Atrix a few years ago?

Not kickstarting obviously, but released a phone with very similar features. Didn't it flop massively?

The Atrix was something similar, except you had to buy their particular docking station, and then a particular cell phone plan to activate the use of them together. And then on top of that it was like a dumbed down Chromebook. Whether it was a flop or not is debatable. The dock was certainly a flop, the Atrix & Atrix 2 were relatively popular but by no means blockbusters or notable.

On another note, I saw Amer's post and my laptop screen wasn't adjusted properly so I didn't see the gray line between post and sig. And therefore the "They don't know / what their faith will do to them" was fittingly added to end of the post regarding Linux. But agreed on the possible uselessness. Unless you want to use the phone as a web server or something odd. Not to mention the price is awful.

I just don't see the point, you most likely have a more powerful PC or laptop and the phone uses ARM architecture so you're still limited to mobile software.

The PC funtionality is something I would use as a second PC, and this thing is more powerful than my current second PC. But really, many of the features are just extras that I don't even need. I just think it is a great deal on some nice hardware. (Even without the Linux bits.)

The price is great, the issue is the lack of contract-subsidizaton - you must not like buying your phone outright like that. I had already decided to buy my next phone outright with no contract. I realize being forced to do that is a big turn-off for many and will hurt this crowd-funding effort. :(

I would be getting this cheaper than an iPhone 5 or Galaxt S4. Cheaper than what I have paid for my iPhone 4S over my contract.

I was already assuming this would fail, but I got in on it out of hope that it won't. :)

Actually I've bought the majority of my phones outside of contracts, but thanks for the condescending and assuming bullshit that comes standard with any conversation with you. I have however, never paid more than $400 for a smart phone. Currently I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S2 & a Motorola Droid 4. If you can take a moment to actually search for a phone unlocked that isn't sold directly by a carrier, you'll find that even on the high end $620 or so is near the max, iPhone excluded. That's a far cry from the Ubuntu Edge looking to land at $780-$830.

The price of the Edge is $600-$830. I would get it for $600 if it could reach the goal. The Galaxy S4 would cost around the same without a contract, as would a 16GB iPhone 5. But the Edge has far superior hardware. Simply upping the iPhone 5 hard drive to half the space of the Edge puts its cost over the max price for the Edge.

And sorry for assuming, but I was trying to make sense of your ridiculous claim about the price. I assumed you were actually commenting on the price of the Edge (like you stated) instead of comparing it to lower tier phones (which makes no sense to do). I don't go around saying the price of a loaded Acura TL is "awful" because I always buy a base model Honda Accord, and many other cars are cheaper as well. That would be silly.

Though to be more fair (to me), you offered up your criticism without any support, and only gave this lacking support after I was left to guess at why you might feel that way. I also don't get how it is condescending to assume that you might not like it for the same reason many others do (as I clearly stated). I made no implication that you couldn't afford it or that it was dumb to take the contract-subsidy, and even noted that I had a contract on my current phone. If I wanted to I could read into your words condescension about the fact that I have always had contracts on my phones, and that they have all been iPhones. I could say you are implying you are better than me because you think I waste too much money on my phones. But again, that would be silly.

The price at the time I wrote the post was $780-$830. It was later edited and changed in their project due to getting indsutry backing they did not expect. Regardless, at the time I bought the phones I have, they were newly released and top of the line. And without a contract I didn't pay the $695 they are now asking. I'm not sure where your $600 figure comes from, but they've edited the project so many times, who knows what they'll actually be charging if they make the phone, despite not receiving the funding they sought. What I was saying was, and continues to be, that particular price for a phone, even unsubsidized is simply too much. While the iPhone always has been overpriced and has little competition for distribution, plenty of top of the line adroid phones can be had for less than that asking price. That's not too mention the simple lack of applications you'll be facing on the platform. Looking at Amazon today, an unlocked Galaxy S4 runs $600 or less and an unlocked iPhone 5 runs $630 or less. Brand new.

As it stands, the price the project is quoting is inflated and not in line with the market price for the phones, and though their phone price has been fluctuating greatly and towards a more reasonable figure, it hasn't reached it yet. Especially when you consider they're asking for a huge sum of money up front and have almost no cost of capital.

The constant editing of the offers is silly, as is the fact that they hide any levels that fill up. The first 5000 on day one were $600 (with everything else being $830). Then they edited in lower prices starting at $625 with limited quantities (hiding them as they filled up). Then again with the $695 price now.

Lack of apps? It would have everything for Android and for Ubuntu.

I get that this is more hardware than you need, but that doesn't make the price inflated. They're basically putting a Netbook in a phone here. It isn't the price that's over the top, it's the hardware.
