Yeah. I didn't die in SMTIV in the last day or so. Because I haven't been playing it.

I'd honestly say that Xillia has the best Tales battle system hands down. That doesn't necessarily make it the best game in the series. I still like the casts of Abyss and Vesperia better on the whole. Xillia has a desperate lack of a Jade or Yuri. And if you say Alvin qualifies, I'm going to mock you relentlessly.

I would say Alvin is more like Raven at the moment.  Sure, he's upbeat and friendly but there's just something about his actions that makes you go "DO NOT TRUST!"

I agree with that.

Alvin is most definately more in line with Raven than Jade or Yuri.

This game is much more enjoyable to play than Graces F and while I can see definately see the signs that the developemental team didn't have as much time on this as they have had on others it definately makes excited for Xillia 2 which by all accounts by those who've played both say is by far a major improvement over Xillia.

Someone needs to tell me what's missing. Xillia feels deeper and richer than Graces by quite a large margin. I keep reading that Xillia was rushed or incomplete, but I don't see how.

It's primarily in battle, which has always been the major selling point of the series. In comparision to Jude and Milla, the other characters don't have nearly the robust art/move set, this is very unlike other tales games where all the characters had roughy the same amount of moves but all played a little differently. In this game the other characters get maybe a little more than half the moveset total in comparison.

Also, Jude and Milla have 12 linked arts together, while they have 5 to 6 with any of the others. The rest of the cast only have 3 to 5 linked arts with other characters with Jude and Milla getting higher value amonst all the pairings.

Even the games producer and director has indicated in interviews that the team was rushed to complete the game because at the time Namco-Bandai wanted to release the game in celebration of the series 15th anniversary. Which is big reason why the other characters have considerably less moves than the two mains.

I can tell on that end but despite that I share the opinion that it's better than Graces. The other two common complaints are that bosses tech out of combos too easily and the fact that linking is the only way you are able to trigger your overlimit gauge therefore making it impossible to do any mystic arts if you want to solo.

For Graces fans the the other thing that bugs them is the fact that free running made a comeback in this game in favor of the sidestepping(even though you can still do it in the game)that they came to cream their jeans over in that installment.

I have noticed the lack of linking options for other characters outside of Milla and Jude.  I didn't think about it but now that you mention it, maybe that's where they did the rushing?

And if that's all that was rushed, then that's not a terrible thing.

As for comparing to Graces, I would have to go back and play it.  Each Tales of battle system takes some getting used to, as they're typically different from one another.

I figured that Milla and Jude had the most links because they're the mains, but I see where you're coming from. Still, I much prefer Xillia's combat. The link system is a smart evolution and I love the individual arts like the elongated staff *snicker* and the snap pivot and so on. It makes the characters feel different even beyond arte set and makes me want to try playing them more than most other Tales games.  I couldn't give a fig about solo-ing the game, so having to link to get into overlimit isn't a flaw as far as I'm concerned. The whole combat system is built around linking, choosing the right link for the right situation adds a layer of strategic depth that often isn't there in the Tales series. In most Tales games I can get away with learning the combos, setting the right AI's for my backups and dodging, comboing, countering and watching my HP. The additional partner-choosing variable adds welcome layer of meaningful complexity that doesn't feel like it was added on for the sake of adding something on like Tales of the Abyss's fields of fonons.

Anyone know if we have a date for Xillia 2 yet?

I cant wait to play the main character for it. He uses mulitweapons like Haseo from .hack//G.U.

All I've heard was that it was going to be sometime in 2014. I don't know, despite the producers saying that they are going to release the game stateside and in the European territories, I still think they are going to wait and see how well this game sells before committing the resources to Xillia 2's localization. Sales for Graces F were pretty poor even by the standards of the series having a more niche audience outside Japan. If Xillia doesn't do well enough I think Namco is simply going to write it off as the series just not having any profitability outside of Japan and will no longer entertain the notion of any more localizations.

I just started Xillia recently - was delayed because I got it and Dragon's Crown on the same day and decided to do DC first. So far, impressions are mostly positive. I like the cast - Milla has so far managed to be a benign version of her character type, I appreciate Jude's thinking-man aptitude, and of course, Alvin's slightly world-weary banter. I'm just about to enter Nia Khera, so I don't have any other party members yet. Music has been above average for a Tales OST, which is great.

The battle system is the same fun flavor we all expect from Tales at this point, but it feels like there's SO MUCH STUFF in battle that at any given time, I can only fight with a third of it in my mind. I did turn up the battles to Moderate to encourage myself to play better and take advantage of more of the myriad things on offer, but thus far, I feel like I'm still wrapping my head around things like "Flash Guards" or Jude's "block and teleport behind you" innate skill.

It's interesting to see other people have commented on Milla's voice; I thought I was definitely in the minority with not liking it. It's not that the voice is "bad voice acting", but the voice they picked just does not feel like it fits the character. Maybe I expect on-the-nose casting from the Tales series because previous games have generally had some really solid dubs, so it's weird hear one character feel so off-kilter, to me.

You know, I'd never thought I'd say this, but I actually miss Asbel's guard-strafing. Though, I'm really glad to have Free Run back. Conflicted feelings!

Anyway, the character interaction is carrying it for me so far (in the usual Tales fashion), but when does the story hook come in? When will I feel compelled to be glued to my TV every waking hour of my free time, instead of casually dropping by every other night or so? C'mon Tales of Xillia, you've got it in you somewhere, I'm sure.
