Apparently this is such a massive change that a simple patch won't fix it, and they're actually moving your existing characters to new servers.

Still not playing it for at least another year though. I'm getting a bit annoyed at the fan baiting they're doing - "jobs", "materia" and other buzzwords are being bandied about to increase interest in the title.

I mean, look at the names of the characters in this screenshot: http://kotaku.com/5849775/first-look-at-final-fantasy-xiv-version-20/gallery/1 - total fanboy baiting. Snazzy UI though.

The outline for development at he bottom of this page is a total turnoff.

It could be interesting to be there for the transition and all that, but if they're really going to start subscription fees back up... I think I'm out.

I don't know, the outline I have to say gives me some hope for the future of Square-Enix. They're actually allowing a system where users can make add-ons. Given that for five years SE actively banned this sort of stuff in FFXI it is, at the very least a willingness to try and change things.

But yeah, I'm not paying them to make a new game that should have been there for day one. I'll pickup 2.0. 1.0 can burn.

I should have elaborated. The outline is solid and so are the ideas. The plan to have a subscription fee in the middle and starting maybe even next month, then to revert to another trial period is shit. The transition is going to be rocky, probably relearning to play over and over, and having to pay while all these major revisions take place is ridiculous. Not to mention the whole timeline speaks for a lot of downtime. If it stays free, I might stick around for the show, if subscription fees kick in, I'll be gone until 2.0 trial period hits.

The fan baiting is pathetic. Never going to play this game, there are so many better MMOs out there worth your time and there will be even more better ones out by the time this one is still in its diapers.

Are they completely re-designing the zones? With all the problems FF14 had, those labyrinths of cut-and-paste resources are by far the wost offenders.

Yes they are.

"The current maps in FINAL FANTASY XIV are not only massive, but allow for seamless passage across wide expanses of the realm. In order to maintain this seamlessness, however, we were forced to heavily reuse assets, resulting in static, repetitive areas. To provide our users with areas that feel fresh and dynamic throughout the extended lifespan of the game, we are both revamping and redesigning area maps. We hope that this, in turn, will equate to increased opportunities for adventure."

Ok, that's definitely a very good move then. Probably the best move they could make.  Of course we'll have to see what these new zones actually look like, but it's hard to imagine it being anything but a massive improvement.

Fanbaiting is one thing but bullshots? SE has never had to resort to that before.

Wow, that UI is really busy-looking. Though still not as bad as some insanely busy WoW UI + add-on setups I've seen. With so much text and bars you'd be amazed there was a game underneath.

Ummmm.. The first FFXIII screen were all Bullshots. Its not new for SE to do that.

As for me and FFXIV I will suspened services when they start charging in november and will pick it back up when 2.0 comes out to give it a try.

Everything I have heard sounds great for 2.0.

Crono
Crono can cross dimensions too!

I'll laugh if it turns out people don't like the changes and prefer it the old, terrible way.  As a person who doesn't play MMO's this doesn't affect me but at least SE is trying... right?

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

They are not just trying they are sinking tons of money and manpower into making it "Hopefully" good.

As much as people rag on SE for making FFXIV I give them props for doing so much to make it good.

Formerly Kenshin

Haven't played since a week after release.  Best thing I read was that they won't charge me automatically.  I will entertain the thought of reinstalling the game in 2013, assuming I still play MMOs then.  I still think they should've just made FFXIv2 instead of this.  I'll give them props, though.  They are trying.
