I actually think it's to the game's benefit that it's not a Final Fantasy. It uses a lot of the same elements as a standard/old school Final Fantasy, but because it's not, it doesn't feel the need to jam in EVERY element from Final Fantasy. No chocobos! No Shiva! No Cid! It's nice, and it lets the game tell its own story without explicitly tying it to the franchise and expectations thereof.

Wow, I took a gamble on this game and it is REALLY good. Nothing like FF heroes of light at all. Fantastic game so far!!. Diddn't realize I was missing out on stuff because I didn't play the demo? I hope I can still attain them other means.

The demo stuff is WORTHLESS. Don't bother.

OK good.

The game just fucking froze on me in a middle of  boss battle. Glitchy ass hardware.

I don't know how long it will be until American people start to finish it so I'll spoiler for later.

Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
The start of the game is really, really good, but about half way through it pulls the fucking drag shoot and literally makes you fight the same four bosses over and over and over again. No new characters or towns or areas are introduced and story elements come in in dribs and drabs.

Once I unlocked the 'Growth Egg' accessory from rebuilding the Norende Accessory shop and managed to get the Conjurer class and its Obliterate ability it was only an afternoon of watching a movie while I held the control stick down and mindly mashed the X button until all my guys were level 99 and mastered every class.

Also the major plot twist is guessable about half way through the game.

I still enjoyed it more than any Final Fantasy game in the last 5 years, but the second half it still a bit of a let down. If it had kept the same pace all the way through it would be a modern day masterpiece.

Yeah. I just got to the part you're talking about and it's definitely horribly padded, but I'm still loving the core gameplay so it's not bothering me TOO much. Being able to turn random encounters off helps a lot.

Seelas
I want to go back.

So I need some advice on whether to take the plunge on this game. I am very much a fan of old-school JRPGs and feel the lack of good ones in this gen. And everything I've heard suggests that, if you are that kind of person, then Bravely Default is God's gift to you.

But when I look at trailers and gameplay footage, I get nervous. I don't want to rain on everyone's parade, but everything about this game makes me kind of uncomfortable. There are a lot of squawky amateur VA club voiceovers, young girls wearing not nearly enough clothing (some of them even on the box cover), and general animu awkwardness. I understand there's a character who is constantly sexually harassing underage women. Half of the aesthetic is beautiful; the other half makes me think "I am too old for this" - and that other half is a non-starter for me. I can't deal with games where I keep saying "Yes, this part is really dumb, but..." anymore.

So basically - am I judging too much from too little? Are these things just minor and occasional blemishes? Is this a game that a bitter, cynical JRPG enthusiast like myself could tolerate? I have not played the demo and would need to pick up a 3DS for it (probably getting SMT4 along with it).

Hard to say. There are sections of the game, particularly Chapter 2, where the lechery gets out of hand. Not by a little but by quite a bit. As for the voice acting, the only voice that really grates is Agnes, but she's a lead, so that's a pretty big issue. The story is not phenomenal, but I'm not done yet.

What I CAN say is that the combat and the job system growth and customization are aboslutely superb. Better than FFV. The soundtrack is fantastic and the visual style is just fine once you get used to it. The job outfits are actually alot of fun, IMO.

So I'm in the "buy this for the gameplay and if you like the plot it's a bonus" crowd. I think if you go in with your eyes open you'll probably enjoy the hell out of it.

Maybe its just a different point of view but to my mind there is never a point in the game I would say anyone is wearing too little clothes, even a garment the game makes out is risque beyond beliefe turns out to be pretty moddest the one time you get a quick glimce of it. There was some issues with the characters getting more clothing compared to the Japanese version but that happens all the time and its nothing extreeme. The most you will get is that a female character has her midrift exposed.

Also, you guys must have really gotten a different box cover than us because I can't see any skin other than the girls face on mine. They're not even showing of their hands!

I also don't remember a time when the 'lechery got out of hand' but again, that might just be my view and uppringing. One of the characters has girls on his mind all the time but mostly its in good fun, and there is a part where the lead female has to enter a beauty padgeant in order to be noticed by someone and the cast give their advice to her in sexying it up. There is an old guy that makes a few inappropriate comments about younger girls but its not game breaking.
The cast is also younger in the Japanese version, the English translations has everyone as late teens.

I actually really like the voice acting and thought it carried the emotions of some serious scences better than a lot of other games I've played recently. I was suprised on how much I really like all the voices.

I dunno. The Fiore DeRosa stuff is EVIL. Granted he's a villain, but DAMN.

Yeah, I wanted to say something but then I didn't, but now may as well......

The Japanese are freaking perverts, man.

The game was actually 'censored' for its NA debut, as some of the girls' outfits were modified to cover them up a bit more and their ages were increased from 15 to 18. So yeah, just think about that for a second; the game in Japan features 15 year old girls dressed like skanks.

Tthis has been a totally pointless PSA.

--------
That aside, the game's aesthetics are gorgeous. The battle system is a lot of fun and the job system is great too. The voice acting is a touch dodgey but it's not horrible.

If the characters hadn't been aged up then the Fiore De Rosa stuff would've made the game HUGELY controversial. HUGELY.

for once, western censorship actually improved my experience. Thank you very much.

the game keeps getting better for me. The story isn't fantastic but I think it's solid, and does its job. I personally really like the characters. I'm a little dissapointed there are only four, it really limits the scope of the game, but at least they make up for it by growing the characters on you as much as possible. Then again the kiddy-ish immature stuff never really bothers me, Seelas, but i'd say Howie's assessment is spot on.

My only gripe with the game is that in order to unlock all the cool abilities to make fun and strategic setups, you gotta grind to the point where you are so OP the abilities are not even needed

hard mode kind of mitigates this, but I honestly need a crazy hard mode to make up for how over leveled I am trying to unlock the fun abilities of each job. I'm still at the beginning but does this game get harder?I hope so. At least all the fiends are super fun/difficult and make use of the abilities and job system to its fullest.

BTW, thanks to Howie and Nick for accepting my friendship. Finally have some people to abillink with! So cool.

I had actually forgotten all about Fiore De Rosa side quest. Now that I think about it, he was a little...yea.

There's a difficulty spike in Chapter 5, but it stays there for the rest of the game. Glad the game has a hard mode because it IS very breakable, especially once you start combining certain abilities that allow you to give yourself FAR too many turns and do FAR too much damage cheaply or even for free. The game's made to be broken, and you have to work for it, but I'm deliberately handicapping myself against some of the bosses now. I'm going to replay on hard. There were a few bosses who made me break a sweat, but not really have since chapter 5 and I just got the "lesser" ending.

Edit: Spoke too soon. The boss combination battles in Chapter 7 are all the challenge I need right now. Holy crud!
