Naw, when I got the game, I was at the stage of my life where I rename all characters into myself, my friends, and all that shiz. So I remember seeing Aerith and going, "Naw mang, you're gonna be my crushie! Tee-hee~ *giggle and renames*"

Sometimes i open up old save files and i remember all the girls i had crushes on growing up. If only they knew that I cared enough of them to name them my favorite FF characters, they would have totally banged me.

HAH!  I used to do the same thing.  I must have had it bad for one girl because she made it as a character for about 2 years worth of RPGing ages 13-15.

On topic, I had a day one copy of FF VII that I reserved like a month in advance and that ho's name was Aeris.  If you think otherwise you're just an old man who's lost his marbles.  Or not, I don't know.  It's probably a giant conspiracy against you. :D

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

Bought FFVII on Day One and got Aeris.  Never knew how people got "Aerith" until I read this thread.  Kinda surprised that came on later prints since she was Aerith in the Tobal No. 1 demo as well as those review copies they sent to magazines.  Names were slightly confusing when reading most FFVII strat guides of the age because of the name changes that they made between the review copies and first commercial batch (Aerith, Utai, et al.).

Mine definitely was Aeris. However, I remember using a GameShark for one playthrough and was using a code that allowed me to use Save anywhere, not just by using a Save Point. So I saved somewhere in the church before you actually get to name her. When I loaded up the next day, I found the save file had her named Aerith. So I do believe that this spelling is in the code somewhere for the PS1 disks while the natural progression has her default name given to Aeris.

It's definitely Aeris on the original FFVII N/A game, but I was under the impression this was considered a slight mistranslation and that "Aerith" was more in line with the intent.  It has since been retconned.

I am fine with it.  I know a few people who called pronounced her name "Aries", which is right up there on my pet-peeve list with people spelling the word rogue as rouge.

I played a day one copy as well that had Aeris, but the demo and original translation was Aerith. You could have easily been seeing all sorts of media at the time that spelled it that way.

All the copies of the game I've ever played have spelt her name as 'Aeris', even in the manual and the (officially licensed) Brady Games guidebook. The 'Aerith' thing didn't really come into play until years later when the Compilation was started.

And to be fair to Square, they were not actually the ones responsible for the original translation, it was Sony (specifically Sony Computer Entertainemnt America) who did the translation, so it's a matter of debate as to why they went with 'Aeris' instead of 'Aerith' (the original PSX version of FF Tactics also spelt her name as 'Aeris' incidentally, although that was changed to Aerith in the PSP remake.)

Square handled FFVII's localization.  Two things happened: Ted Woolsey didn't move to LA when Squaresoft's offices did and Hironobu Sakaguchi didn't like the changes he made to some of the stuff in FFVI so he wanted the development team to handle it themselves.  I remember reading that some of the people associated with their later, better localizations were first hired when this was happening even.

EDIT: Cool.  Found it.

Dammit Der, lol.

Okay, I think I may know now why I always thought of her name as Aerith back in the beginning. This might be due to the magazine previews/early walkthroughs I read back then. Will try to see if I can find a copy of that magazine I read that had a strategy guide for the game (which, incidentally, spoiled me about her death) . If they had a pre-prod copy of the game for their review/walktrhough, that may have her name in the original Aerith format.

Nah. They used the terms updated for the first print: Aeris, Wutai, etc. The Versus Books guide used Aeith, Utai, et al., as did all of the magazine strategy guides of the day.
