Colbert to replace Letterman

Stephen Colbert has signed a five-year deal to take over for David Letterman sometime next year.

CBS moved quickly to replace David Letterman after the late-night host announced his retirement last week. Confirming speculation, Stephen Colbert, of Comedy Central's Colbert Report, will take over the Late Show sometime next year.
Colbert, whose current contract expires at year end, signed a five-year deal to host the show, which will begin when Letterman decides to step down when his contract expires in August 2015, though he could choose to leave earlier next year.

"Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career," Colbert said in a statement. "I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead. I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."

Colbert, 49, was an early favorite to succeed Letterman, 66, who last week announced plans to step down next year after a 33-year career in late night, including the last 11 on CBS, which he joined after losing to Jay Leno in his quest to replace another legend, Johnny Carson.

Colbert introduced his mock-conservative blowhard persona as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and got his own show (produced by Stewart) in 2005, which competes with Letterman at 11:30 ET/PT four nights a week but has a much higher concentration of the younger viewers that networks seek. CBS isn't talking yet about location, producer or "specific creative elements" of the new show, but Colbert is likely to shed that persona, which would be difficult to sustain in an hourlong network talk show.

The Daily Show has spawned successful careers for several of its correspondents, including Steve Carell, Ed Helms and John Oliver, who filled in for Stewart last summer, was approached by CBS last fall but signed a deal with HBO for a weekly show, Last Week Tonight, that premieres April 27. Ironically, he would have been a logical candidate to replace Colbert but left, he says, because "there's no space" at Comedy Central, he said Monday. "They already have three shows back to back."

"Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television," said CBS CEO Leslie Moonves. "David Letterman's legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today's announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night."

It'll be interesting to see the non-Colbert Report Colbert in action; he's been practically living in that character for so long.

Fuck Shit Stack.

No my Colbert report!

What is comedy central going to do? I can't think of anyone in the daily show news team with good enough charisma or character to take Colberts place in that time slot if they do indeed at all continue with a show there. I don't see why they wouldn't it makes a lot of money for them. I would've said John Oliver, but he's got his own show on HBO now.

That's what I came in here to say!
*sigh* I'll miss his show, his character was fantastic and his antics were surprisingly effective

Jessica Williams might be able to. Failing that, I'd love to see Wyatt Cenac return to Comedy Central in that slot.

A co worker of mine said maybe they should stretch the daily show into an hour. I think that idea could work. Jon Stewart already gives interviews that go way over the designated time alloted for the show.

At least all the Colbert Report staff is coming with him to the Late Show. But I'll miss his satirical edge.

Hoping Wyatt Cenac is the new host for the 11:30 slot. John Oliver would've been the perfect guy for the job but he had to go and get his own show on HBO. >:( Another guy I'd love to see, although he's from outside the Daily Show family tree, is W. Kamau Bell.

Speaking as an outsider to your strange country's ways, I have to say this subject is treated with far too much importance.  It baffles me how the late night chat show is such a big thing, espcially when the big names (save Conan) range from mediocre to shit.

I don't care much of anything about the Tonight Show. But whatever Comedy Central replaces the Colbert Report with will have to compete directly with Colbert in my time zone. Not such a great thing for them I doubt. I'll really miss Colbert. What you have to understand from an outside perspective is that The Daily Show & The Colbert Report are the best news sources we have on television here anymore.

We have a replacement: https://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/10/the-daily-shows-larry-wilmore-to-host-the-minority-report-replacing-the-colbert-report

Could be interesting. I do like when Larry Wilmore shows up on the Daily Show, and it would be funny to get politics from a black man's perspective. It's far to early to speculate how his show will be and we haven't really seen Larry in an anchor seat.
But color me interested.
