They're doing a lot of bonus content and the game has changed massively in the last year, so it's a good time to re-activate if you've got an old character.

I loved this game so much, I wish it had gotten the funds to get the kind of facelift WOW had, or that it would have been updated on the technical side more. It's still one of my all time favorites but my last two attempts to get back into it have come up very dry very quickly unfortunately.

I might finally be done with this game, but a small part of me hopes not. Would have just been cool to see this game get turned into F2P and revitalized a bit, but honestly I bet Square is happy to let this one die now and move as much people as they can to Final Fantasy XIV.

I know how they work

So, would it be a waste for me to try and get FFXI now?  It would be a new purchse as I've only ever done a trial account many years ago.

Depends. Due to the modifications to the game in the last year a lot of the content can be soloed.

For example if you want to experience the storyline all of the expansion and missions of the last 10 years can be soloed now, with the exception of the newest expansion.

Yeah, they've lowered or removed a lot of level restrictions for most missions/story battles, plus there is also the new Trust NPC system where you can recruit (or rather, gain magical copies) of story NPCs like Aldo and Shantotto and actually call them in battle to fight alongside you, in addition to the regular 'Fellow' NPC. You can call up to three Trust NPCs and they're classed as a 'party', meaning it's usually more than sufficient to handle most story missions now. Lion's Trust NPC is my favoruite - her attacks are deadly. :p

But yes, FFXI is definetely undergoing something of a Renaissance at the moment - I'm even seeing lots of new players/characters around which is something I hadn't seen in a long time. Of course the glory days are well and truly gone, but the way the game is now, Matsui has definetely fixed a lot of long standing problems with the game which were major barriers to truly being able to [i[enjoy[/i] it (I mean, I've heard they've even changed that stupid gate system in Eldeime Necropolis so you no longer need a friend to open it!). Time will tell whether it can actually sustain itself though, but they're definetely going in the right direction.

I've wanted to play it for years, but my computer was pretty bad.  I've recently upgraded and now have one that's more than capable, but I'm hesitant to pour all the money into the game and its expansions if it's just going to shut down sometime relatively soon.

I would say you easily have a year before any of it is close to getting shut down, and you can always start with just the regular content first before investing in the expansions. It's still a great game, but a big time investment if you want to truly experience it.

Point being: The time investment is much more significant than any monetary investment in it.
