No crying from me. Just a sudden lack of interest and a desire to see the game fail. I'll never cry over getting to keep my $60 in my pocket to save for something else.

So, because there aren't any female playable characters, not only are you now not going to buy the game but you're also hoping for it to be a failure?  Holy overreaction Batman.

I agree it's disappointing, and a bit shocking, that there aren't any playable female characters.  But having gender balance be the deciding factor upon whether or not you play a game is pretty ridiculous.  IMO, at least.

It's the middle of the 2010s. That's not an overreaction. Hell, it's an expectation, or at least it should be. And it's especially an expectation considering the FF series has had a playable female character in every installment since, oh, FFII on the NES in the late 1980s? FF Sausage Fest is a HUGE step backward for the series in that regard.

At least with AC Unity you could make the excuse that there's only one main character. In FFXV you control a party of four. No excuse.

Yes, I hope it falls on its face, to send a message to these studios that excluding one gender from a party-based RPG like this is completely unacceptable.

IMO, it IS an overreaction.  Especially since as you pointed out, the FF franchise has a long history of having playable female characters.  Hell, the most recent mainline FF game, XIII, had a female as the main protaganist.  The sequel had a different female as the main protaganist.  That's not even counting the strong narrative presence Vanille had in XIII, or the role that Fang played as Kicker of Ass.

It'd be one thing if Square Enix had a history of ignoring females and having only male playable characters.  But it's the compelte opposite of that.  I'm disappointed that FFXV is going to be a sausagefest, but I'm not going to boycott it and hope for its financial failure simply because I can't play as a female.  No more than I boycotted FFX-2 for not having any male playable characters.

Having an entirely female cast in FFX-2 was one of the few things about that game I didn't have a problem with, so I'm willing to give FFXV the benefit of the doubt doing the same thing with dudes.   Maybe there's a justifiable reason for it within the story*, and not some sort of bizarre, uncharacteristic display of misogyny.   Maybe the game isn't  just Burnout Paradise meets The Hangover meets the headache-inducing bits of Kingdom Hearts that don't include Disney characters.

*Probably not, given Squeenix's track record of late, but let's at least wait and see.

Well, an all-male cast is... it's boring.  And considering FFXIII's (and the sequels')... well, general lack of quality*, it's another mark in the "dno't care anymore" collumn.

Final Fantasy doesn't have its DEFINITE BUY status anymore, and this ain't helping convince me.

Oh, and?  "But FFX-2 had an all-female cast!"  Yeah, it did.   But it also had a three-person cast.  FFXV has at least five**, maybe more***, so it's only maybe a good comparison.  AND FFX-2 is a sequel, pulling characters from a larger, more diverse cast.  Also most people hate FFX-2, so...

*I liked it... but it was very problematic, and the sequels I won't even unpack here.
**And they're all "white", or Japanese but in such a way that Western audiences will still see them as white.  At least a few of them are older--y'know, maybe 30.
***Five playable, a bunch of non-playable which.... judging from promotional materials includes a whopping two women.  If you include FFX-2's voiced NPCs there are plenty of men, including at least an equal number of new non-recycled story-driving characters as playable females.  So, y'know, again, not really a good comparison.

I haven't watched anything really about this game besides the newest trailer. What if it turns out to be 5 gay dudes? Is it gonna be cool then? Or what if one of them is trans and actually has female parts but identifies male?

That's the kind of daring and interesting risk Square Enix won't take.

The X-2 comparison works fine in the basic context in which it was meant.  I never claimed it was a perfect mirror of XV, mosly because I have no damn clue how XV is as a game.  I don't know how many recurring characters it has, I don't know how many of them are female, etc.  What I do know is that XV has an all-male cast, and X-2 had an all-female cast.  In X-2's case, I didn't care.  In XV's case, I don't care.  I don't judge games solely on the gender ratio of playable characters.  Gameplay, story, character development, art design, atmosphere and music are much more important to me.

In the case of X-2, I was let down by it having an unbelievably shitty story, terrible music and severely disappointing character development.  The gameplay was fun though.  In the case of XV, again, I have no idea since I haven't played it yet.  But I'm not going to rage and shake my fist at the sky and hope and pray for the game to be a failure in order to teach Square Enix some lesson.

It seems to me that people are conflating this with the recent GamerGate insanity.  Even though XV's story was dreamt up by Nomura nearly a decade ago.  Square Enix just had the unfortunate timing of revealing info about it just after an internet shitstorm had finally died down.  Like I said before, Square Enix is a company that has a long history of strong female characters.  I understand being disappointed that XV is all-male.  I feel the same way.  But raging and wishing for the game to be a failure to send Square Enix a "message" as if they're a company of mysoginists who have a history of that, is just way over the top.

Finally, I don't like the idea of there being some kind of checklist for games.  You need this many women, this many asians, this many blacks, this many disabled, etc.  If you don't, people will rage and wish for your economic ruin.  The idea of stifling creativity like that fundamentally bothers me.  I mean, speaking for myself, I'd LOVE if there were gay or bi characters in FF beyond fucking Mukki.  But I don't want that to be a forced requirement in all FF games going forward.

I'd rather have an all-male cast than the growing trend in anime where females have bigger balls than the males and the males are bitch-mode weaklings.
