I agree it's disappointing, and a bit shocking, that there aren't any playable female characters. But having gender balance be the deciding factor upon whether or not you play a game is pretty ridiculous. IMO, at least.
Rhaegar said: It's the middle of the 2010s. That's not an overreaction. Hell, it's an expectation, or at least it should be. And it's especially an expectation considering the FF series has had a playable female character in every installment since, oh, FFII on the NES in the late 1980s? FF Sausage Fest is a HUGE step backward for the series in that regard. At least with AC Unity you could make the excuse that there's only one main character. In FFXV you control a party of four. No excuse. Yes, I hope it falls on its face, to send a message to these studios that excluding one gender from a party-based RPG like this is completely unacceptable.
Lexx said: It'd be one thing if Square Enix had a history of ignoring females and having only male playable characters. But it's the compelte opposite of that. I'm disappointed that FFXV is going to be a sausagefest, but I'm not going to boycott it and hope for its financial failure simply because I can't play as a female. No more than I boycotted FFX-2 for not having any male playable characters.

Final Fantasy doesn't have its DEFINITE BUY status anymore, and this ain't helping convince me. Oh, and? "But FFX-2 had an all-female cast!" Yeah, it did. But it also had a three-person cast. FFXV has at least five**, maybe more***, so it's only maybe a good comparison. AND FFX-2 is a sequel, pulling characters from a larger, more diverse cast. Also most people hate FFX-2, so... *I liked it... but it was very problematic, and the sequels I won't even unpack here. **And they're all "white", or Japanese but in such a way that Western audiences will still see them as white. At least a few of them are older--y'know, maybe 30. ***Five playable, a bunch of non-playable which.... judging from promotional materials includes a whopping two women. If you include FFX-2's voiced NPCs there are plenty of men, including at least an equal number of new non-recycled story-driving characters as playable females. So, y'know, again, not really a good comparison.
