shooter_mcgavin said: Yeah I'm bummed at The Lego Movie snub too though I haven't seen any of the other animated films except Big Hero 6 so I can't really judget. Though I suspect Lego movie is a lot better than How to Train Your Dragon 2.
The only possible explanations are that many members of the Academy's animation branch did not rate the technical and creative achievements, were deterred by the tie-in to the Lego brand and preferred to reward the traditional hand-drawn technique of those other films*. There was a telling quote from an Academy member after the nominations announcement in Los Angeles. "They [animation branch members] are old f---s and many are Europeans and they hate seeing traditional animation slip away," he told the Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg.
