I'm going to try SCIENCE!

How you know the Academy is fucked: American Sniper somehow gets a best picture nod, but then everyone's like "what even is Selma?"

I'd be saltier about the Lego Movie being snubbed if the animation category weren't already an embarrassment of riches

Fuck Shit Stack.

I would hope the lego movie would get nominated, but it's probably too weird for the academy. I'm going to assume dragon 2 or big hero 6 are going to win even though I found those two movies underwhelming.

I predict Duet will win animated short.

I also predict interstellar will win best visual effects.

Hmm, I've not seen any of the movies listed for Best Picture. To those who've seen them, do you think Intersellar should be nominated instead of something else there?

This is easily the least interesting Oscars ever.

Also, fuck American Sniper, and fuck all the right-wing assholes who suck that movie's dick.

Yikes and away!

I think this is the first time ever I have not seen one of the Best Picture nominees. This feels like a rather lackluster year.

Annoyed at the Lego Movie snub, but Princess Kaguya was an absolutely excellent movie and should win.

I find it hilarious that The Lego Movie's only category is Best Song, when the directors intentionally made Everything Is Awesome a parody of songs that won previous Oscars.

I've been there, hombre.

Kaguya dragged a little in the end, but it was easily the most gorgeous looking Ghibli film ever made. The only other Animated nominee I've seen is BH6 which was great but not Oscar-worthy. I liked the Book of Kells, so I'll have to check out Song of the Sea.

The way Best Picure works is that there are ten open slots.  Movies have to surpass a certain threshold of votes to be nominated, and even then it's only the top ten vote getters.  Since there are two open slots this year, that means no other movie other than these eight received enough votes to be nominated.  So regardless of any movies taken out, unless Interstellar was everyone's second pick, it still wouldn't get in.

As for the actual nominees, I haven't seen any, so meh @ them all.

I've never actually seen this movie, but what exactly is wrong with it?

I do but I put the blame mostly on Paramout's handing of the film's marketing and campaign than anything else.

I have already seen four of the 8 nominees. Whiplash, Boyhood, Birdman, and The Grand Budapest Hotel and I can totally support those four films.

Too bad Nightcrawler didn't get much here :-(

Apparently it's pro war or something like that. But the director is Clint Eastwood who is a Republican after all. You know that guy who had an invisible chair during the RNC.

Yeah I'm bummed at The Lego Movie snub too though I haven't seen any of the other animated films except Big Hero 6 so I can't really judget. Though I suspect Lego movie is a lot better than How to Train Your Dragon 2.

It's not pro-war. It's not against war. It has no message. The movie is "Here's a thing that happened. Here's another thing. And another". If anything, it should have been a documentary. As it is, we get a pumped up war movie with...nothing. It felt so empty to watch.

I was definitely way more entertained by Lego Movie than Dragon 2.
The How to Train your Dragon movies just don't seem to do it for me.

Interesting reason on Lego Movie's snub

The only possible explanations are that many members of the Academy's animation branch did not rate the technical and creative achievements, were deterred by the tie-in to the Lego brand and preferred to reward the traditional hand-drawn technique of those other films*. There was a telling quote from an Academy member after the nominations announcement in Los Angeles. "They [animation branch members] are old f---s and many are Europeans and they hate seeing traditional animation slip away," he told the Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg.

This Storify breaks it down pretty well.

(I haven't seen it, but it's pretty obvious that I don't want to.)
