The summer of '99, to be specific.

Anyone hang around at FFO, Eyes on Final Fantasy, or the FF-related ezboards during that period?

It's fun to connect with your past every now and again.

Shoot, I didn't even know that the internet existed until 2002. Back then, it was all dial-up. I came to this place around that May, I think. What was your last username?

Hey Coolsetzer.

I believe it was just "Jaden". Before anyone knew who Jaden Smith was. When I stole the name from the Star Trek: TNG episode "Thine Own Self," in which Data loses his memory. :P

I was 15. A high school friend introduced me to FFO. I had only just gotten my PlayStation and was discovering FFT and FFVII. FFO was already very large. I definitely wasn't a member of the first wave. But I showed up before the shutdown of Tifa's 7th Heaven and the elimination of General Chat (or whatever it was named).

I recall Darkhorse was in charge. Loviatar was one of the other big names in the community, though she went by a different handle initially. I became an acquaintance of many of the denizens over ICQ. Being a kid who had just discovered the internet, I was eager to become part of the community and lusted after a moderator position. I didn't stick around too long however, soon migrating to the Ezboard rings (now Yuku), specifically clOuD's Final Fantasy: In Depth.

Have been reminiscing lately and I decided to take a poke around the net to see what remains. It's amazing to think that was fifteen years ago, or half my life.

Going to throw some names out there. Some I knew well, others I just knew of. Nothing exhaustive, just off the top of my head:

Tiara
Emerald Aeris
Timelord
Princess Usa (not U.S.A.) and her brother... I want to say Tera something... Teraphor? It wasn't Terrapin. :)
Edge
Kain
clOuD, of course
Arvynia
Pixie
Rinoa (There were many of them of course... but she a member of our goup. I forget other names she used.)
Never Is A Promise
Lilly Rinoa Landois
Britt (Short for Britton :P)
Magic
Some guy who lived in the California desert and called programs "frogs" and called testers "froggers".

Of course, most of these folks I got to know on the Ezboards. But most of them had originally come from FFO, or at least visited it. Some of them probably used different names at FFO.

I know how they work

I think I first joined in 2000, but I remember very few of the regulars from those days.  The only ones I can recall off the top of my head are Lezard, Saint7, Quistis_13 and Boko Mog.

I first joined in '99 after FFVIII came out, but I lurked forever. The earliest stuff I remember are the groups that came about and split off into their own subforums or ezboards like FFTurks, NoAH, and FoTA. I'm pretty sure I still have some of those banners somewhere.

I joined around the time FFVIII came out, as well. Discovered the site while searching for images to use for the FFVIII page I was building on WebTV.

Jin, Indiana Jerico and Deedlit were names from back then (Lezard after VP was released). Indy is still around.

I wonder if anybody has had as many different names as I have?

I believe Deedlit was the next name Loviatar took?

I definitely remember the name Indiana Jericho.

I think I remember you. Or at least I remembered putting a name similar to yours in that FFO poem I made back in '99/'00.

And Princess Usa's brother was Tarrasque. :P

Well as far as the old FFO goes, I remember only a few people. I only posted in the FF I - VI board for the most part. I also posted a lot when I was still doing fanfiction for FF VI. I remember the old Halloween events on the board. The admins would change everyone's usernames and let us post a ton of spam topics. It was so much fun, and I remember it well.

I don't think that Rain, Rinoa, Cray Wolfen and Fifan are still around. If I went through the list, I would definitely remember a few names and avatars. Magic Jewel and Free Spirit still post once in a great while. I think it was Onyx who ended up perma-banning me for a comment I made around the time that I was going through a divorce.

The board may not ever be as big as it was, but at least we're still here. =D

I did!  I was mainly an FFO poster though, outside of that I was pretty active on the Anipike (Anime Web Turnpike) forums and Usenet as well.  The FF Usenet groups (alt.games.final-fantasy in particular) weren't dead yet.

EDIT: I seem to remember I had a Home Movies inspired avatar on most boards (I was a big Dr. Katz fan and loved Coach McGuirk on that show from the time it started in 99), I know at one point I had a McGuirk av here, if anyone remembers me.

As I did six months ago. What the hell, right?

And I remember those days as if they were yesterday. Getting old is bloody confusing.

It's truly bizarre to have grown up with the internet. A lot from that era has faded away, but bits and pieces remain. And much from the current age may persist forever.

Such a pretty site, was it not? That's the very page I remember, complete with "5.0 Preview Here" at the top.  Brings back such strong memories of endlessly refreshing for replies to my posts, pre-ordering FF8, and spending hours browsing Gamespot back when it was good....

Fuck Shit Stack.

I joined shortly after FF9 came out.  So sometime in late 2000. The internet and final fantasy seemed like such a different place back then.

I joined 2001 I think there was definatley more people in the boards. At the time there was a lot of content on the main page even interviewing some of FFX's voice actors.

FFONLINE was actually pretty well known I think EGM featured the site once.
