So Long Vana'diel...

Well, sort of...

SE has just announced plans for FFXI's future, and there are some surprises in store.

But basically:

Storyline to officially be wound up with a special 'compilation' mission called 'Rhapsodies of Vana'diel' in the May 2015 update
PS2 and 360 service to officially end in March 2016 (PC version to continue though)
New regular special in-game event called 'The Goddess's Gala' to reward players
Smartphone port (or rather, an app to emulate certain features of the game)
Mini FFXI tie-in game for smartphones called 'Final Fantasy Grandmasters' (still an MMORPG, strangely enough)

I can't say I wasn't entirelly surprised by some of this news (although the shutdown of the 360 version wasn't expected). I'm still a little saddened that they're winding up the main story though, as this means the mentioned but still unexplored regions of Vana'diel (Ozhirlya, the mysterious Far Eastern Empire, the far northern continent the orcs and gigas originated from) will now never be playable. Ah well, at least the PC version is continuing.

If nothing else, Rhapsodies sounds like some Avengers style teamups with characters from different expansions working together.
It's a nice send-off.

Apparently there will be a renewed focus on PC optimisation - nothing dramatic, but some PS2 issues that impacted PC should go away hopefully.

We all knew that this day was going to happen eventually. The day they start dropping support for it one platform at a time. How about the PS3 version? They still have PSN support, right? Now might be a good time to get into the game and play the most complete build for however long that support will last.

There is no PS3 version.

Atma Weapon
I Am Pure Energy

This really makes me miss the good old days of waking up at 3am to camp Fafnir, and then losing to a claim bot.

I'm going to get it off steam sometime next week.  I tired to do the free trial a couple days ago, but it turns out that ended several years ago and S-E is too lazy to take away all the advertisements for it -_-

My only fear is that after spending money on the game it won't work on my Windows 8.1

Twelve years later, and I finally have FFXI.  It is VERY complex compared to WoW, which holds your hand more and more with each expansion.  So far I'm still just trying to get used to all the different aspects of the gameplay, as well as exploring Bastok.  I'm glad I'm finally giving it a go though.

It's an incredible game and most likely easier to experience without a group than it was when I first started. Enjoy yourself, there's years and years worth of amazing content available.
