As of this posting, five more days until the DC reboot happens.

Use this thread to discuss whatever you like, as long as it's connected to the art of sequential story-telling. Reviews, general discussion, questions, recommendations, etc. Have at it!

"Of Christ's twelve Apostles Judas alone proved to be traitor. But if he had acquired power, he would have represented the other eleven Apostles as traitors, and also all the lesser Apostles whom Luke numbers as seventy." - Leon Trotsky

I have a blog. This is its URL. You should read it. It's about education and skepticism and books and it has a lot of pictures of Batman and Robin in it: https://baldermoon.wordpress.com/

So is the reboot an "Ultimate Universe" sort of thing and the main line is continuing or did they literally reboot everything?

Old Canon ---> FLASHPOINT! ---> Reboot ---> New Canon

Some parts of the Old Canon made it through--most Batman stuff, for example, though the timing of it all is confusing now--but the vast majority of the "real" DCU is being completely re-written.

It's sort of like the Ultimate Universe if that had overwritten the main Marvel canon instead of running on its own.

So eventually there is going to be a retconn bringing all the old stuff back into the fold. Eh, I'll still give it a shot. Any note worthy writers on any titles I should be specifically looking out for?

I'm sorry, but no. The current continuity will not ever be restored. Starting next week, everything outside of Batman and Green Lantern will be totally altered, and it's all because of Professor Zoom. It's basically like Crisis on Infinite Earths if Crisis on Infinite Earths wasn't nearly as good as it is.

Fortunately, there's a ton of great new titles starting up: https://dccomics.com/dcu/comics/?dat=20110907

The ones I'm most excited about are Action Comics, Animal Man, Green Arrow, Storm Watch, Swamp Thing, Batman and Robin, Batwoman, Demon Knights, Frankenstein, Green Lantern, Red Lanterns, Batman, Blue Beetle, Green Lantern Corps, Nightwing, Supergirl, All Star Western, Green Lantern: The New Guardians, Justice League Dark and Superman.

You really don't think that some point down the line there is going to be a "Psycho Pirate remembers everything" moment?

I'm positive of it. That's why they did the reboot in the way that they did. Barry even said so in, I think, Flashpoint #3, "There's no way to put things back to the way they were." Despite his best efforts, Barry will not be able to undo all of the changes that Zoom made. It's impossible. Barry will do his best, but the damage has been done.

So is there some sort of event of Flashpoint and then into the reboot that are worthwhile to read before starting with the new number 1s?

Ummm...Flashpoint isn't bad, and the tie-ins aren't either, I guess. But from what I can tell, it's going to just leap directly from Flashpoint #5 to Justice League #1 this coming Wednesday.

I know how they work

My problem with Flashpoint is the same one I have with Fear Itself. It just feels like fluff. You have the two gimicks (Reality has been altered! See what's different! vs. Heroes and villains got Thor hammers! Watch them wreck shit!) that on the surface are entertaining, but there's really nothing underneath. With Fear Itself I'm not annoyed too much, because it's just a random event that isn't supposed to have any major repurcussions. But Flashpoint is responsible for relaunching the entire DCU. I was expecting for there to be more to it than, "Reverse Flash fucked up the timeline lol".

After the relaunch, so far, I'm going to continue with the Green Lantern family of books, as well as try out Justice League, Action Comics, and maybe Batwoman, Stormwatch and Firestorm. Action Comics will be my first Morrison comic since New X-Men, so I'm kinda excited/apprehensive about it.

My major problem with Flashpoint is that it's the most poorly paced comic I have ever read. That's not hyperbole. It's a five issue miniseries and what, exactly, has happened with the last issue coming out in four days? All of the action happens in the tie-ins, and all of those are too short to really give that good of a story to begin with when a lot of the issues have to give out information and backstory rather than action. The best one so far was the Deathstroke one because the only information that you really need is, "Deathstroke is a pirate now."

Personally, the thing that makes me angriest about this entire situation (aside from this entire situation) is that it's all just suddenly happening, with no real build up and hardly any comics getting actual send-offs. Most of the comics are just ending, without any real sense of closure with Secret Six, Jonah Hex and Batgirl being notable exceptions. The last issue of Secret Six was outstanding, by the way, and I really hope that Bane emerges on the other side without being altered too much. I'm also really pissed off about Barbara Gordon; I won't be picking up Batgirl at any point in the future, despite how good it is. There is simply no reason for Barbara Gordon to become Batgirl again, especially when Stephanie Brown was fantastic and Cassandra Cain is out there as well. What the hell, DC. What. The. Hell.

I'm so conflicted about Babs. I mean... Babs is my favorite Batgirl, that much I know. But she's also awesome as Oracle. And Steph is too damn good of a character to discard (I admit to diliking Cass, but less so now that she's Black Bat).

I just don't really care. DC has lost me as a customer.

Lets just...ignore the fact that I said the same exact thing when the reboot was announced. Never happened.

I think that's the wrong approach to take towards this. There's actually quite a few titles that look to be pretty damn awesome starting in September, not least of which the 'Dark and Edgy' (GROAN) titles, especially Animal Man and Swamp Thing.

Yeah, I'm still pissed off that the reboot is happening. If I had my way, we'd still be getting a bunch of new, awesome books but there wouldn't be the added baggage. But I think that if you stop reading DC entirely, you're going to be missing out on a lot of really great content.
