The problem is that some first generation children of immigrant Muslims are going to the middle east to experience their culture and being recruited and radicalized over there. They end up fighting and going back "home" to Europe, where they plot Jihad against innocent people. It's a bad problem that I see spreading. I think the President's decision to close the borders last night was a prudent move. I haven't watched the news yet today, but my heart goes out to the victims and their families.

Already Slate is reporting Poland is pulling out of the EU's refugee resettlement program, and if the French government takes further steps against their Muslim citizens its only going to increase alienation and feed into terrorist recruiting. At some point the question has to be asked "Why aren't we assimilating these people? What are we doing wrong that they would find something like ISIS attractive?" Which is not say this attack or any other was invited, and of course we need to fight the people who've already decided we need to die like ISIS, just as we had to fight Al Qaeda after 9/11. But unless we pair that with a conversation on how we can make room for muslims in our cultures and societies, the only question we'll ever get to ask is what the NEXT group we'll have to fight is.
