LOTR.
The Original Star Wars trilogy is exceptional as are  the three LOTR films. So I make my judgement based on the fact that The Hobbit films, while having their flaws beat out the Star Wars Prequels, by a wide margin.

The immense impact Star Wars has had on me, prequels and all, just way outweighs LOTR--and that's from someone who enjoyed 2/3 of the Hobbit movies (not even my rampant fanboyism could save the mess of a third one).

There's no beating Star Wars in my book.  It's just not done.

Easily Star Wars. I'm not a big Lord of the Rings fan.

And I'm talking about the entire mythos, movies and books.

Fair enough. I'm still picking Star Wars. It had a much bigger impact on me than the LotR books did, despite how much I love them.

I'd have a harder time picking between LotR/ASoIaF, tbh.

They're both on the routine rotation, but I gotta go with Star Wars on this one.  I don't have a LotR tat, but I do have a Star Wars one.  I also feel like Star Wars had a larger cultural impact.  Perhaps it had a significant head start, but the fervor for more (specifically thinking about the Hobbit movies) didn't quite match what's been generated for The Force Awakens.

I seem to remember quite a bit of excitement before The Phantom Menace came out...

=P

Not gonna lie, I will probably love TFA even if it sucks.

Be great, it shall... at least I hope.

If nothing else, soundtrack should be good.

I generally agree with The Hulk on this. LotR is this great world and mythos with somehow totally uninteresting stories in it. I never read the Hobbit as a child, just as an adult, and it is a children's book. I actually like the Hobbit movies more just for that reason. I could barely get through the Fellowship book or movie, but Two Towers and RotK are better. Honestly I take it back, the stories aren't uninteresting, they are just told in an uninteresting way. I don't know how to explain it. I just don't ever feel a strong bond with any of the characters. It was easier for me to read Silmarillion and Children of Hurin than the Hobbit or any of the LotR books.

Star Wars, on the other hand, is full of likeable characters doing interesting things. Maybe if it took months for them to rescue Leia and come back to Rebel Base and plan and assualt the Death Star it would be worse.

It not only took months, but there were a dozen of them, and nothing differentiated any of them other than their names, which were all pretty similar anyways.

(I maybe really dislike the actual LOTR source material.  I know, I know.)

I would say that LotR wins the prequels just because that is how bad Phantom Menace and Attack of the clones are. I guess it depends on the scope of "prequel". Is the Hobbit the prequel to LotR? Or Silmarillion? Both? If Silmarillion is included, then does all of the Knights of the Old Republic stuff count for Star Wars (I'm talking games and comics)? As long as SW prequels only contains the prequel movies, LotR prequels of whatever definition wins. Otherwise it's a lot closer and hard to tell.

Middle-earth, either way... by a significant margin.

The Hobbit movies suck compared to LotR, but the SW prequels suck compared to the Hobbit movies.

EDIT - I still enjoy SW movies, but I guess the lore just doesn't draw me in the same way as LotR.

I don't know if the Hobbit counts as a prequel, but I hate the Hobbit (the book)--like, I really, really hate it, so even terrible lines about how much Annakin hates sand are still better than the Hobbit.

I'll turn in my nerd card now.

But like like Hobbit movies 1 and 2 a LOT, so... god, this is a really hard judgement to make.
