Now heres a good question which series had the less atrocious prequels?

Fixed it for you.

Star Wars prequels were aggressively stupid and bad. The Hobbit Trilogy was more just poorly paced, overlong and boring as fuck. I'm a fair bit more offended by the former.

Fuck Shit Stack.

The one thing I loved about LOTR was the extended editions and the making of videos. I swear I watch those making of documentaries more than I've watched the movies themselves.

Man you can see how stressful the movie was on everyone I swear Peter Jackson gained all of his weight back.

When I was a little boy, Star Wars was just so important to me.  I loved the movies, I loved playing with my friend's action figures.  I watched the Ewoks and Droids cartoons and I even liked the TV movies. :)

My mom has original LotR Ballantine paperbacks and a first edition Silmarillion, but for whatever reason, I never read the paperbacks when I was young.  But as I got into middle school, I became a reader and my school library had LotR (that weren't falling apart like my mom's), so I gave Tolkien a try.  It was a fundamental event in my life, though I didn't recognize it as such at the time.  After reading LotR and then The Silmarillion, I moved on to The History of Middle-earth, picking up individual volumes as I could find them.  After that, in college and with a full time ethernet connection, I devoted a considerable amount of time and energy to an online text-based Tolkien-themed roleplaying game.  Aside from my love of Tolkien's creative works, his son Christopher, in exploring his father's works in HoME, exposed me to things like Beowulf and other aspects of north European culture that influenced Tolkien, and for that I am grateful.

I love Star Wars, but LotR has my heart.

I'm in the camp that feels that Star Wars has a much better story than LOTR, but LOTR are drastically better films.

The only time Star Wars really even approaches being... cinema, if I want to get snooty about it, is Empire Strikes Back, and maybe a few moments in Revenge of the Sith.   But the story...  The rise of Anakin Skywalker, his fall to darkness, and his salvation at the hands of his children... mirrored by the fall and redemption of the entire galactic civilization.  It's sweeping and operatic and small and intimate all at once.   It just gets bogged down in Jar Jar, Ewoks, bad love scenes, and whining about going into Tosche Station to pick up power converters.

Lord of the Rings, on the other hand, is probably the most exquisite rendition of some guys hiking to a volcano that you'll ever see.  So... I have no idea which I prefer.

On the other hand, if we're talking about franchises as a whole, Star Wars wins hands down.  I love Middle Earth, but it's sorely lacking in Jedi, lightsabers, spaceships, and robots.   Unless those found their way into the Battle of the Five Armies extended cut.  =p

LotR.

As far as the movies go, the only thing Star Wars can compete in is the soundtrack.  I like the "idea" of SW but I don't think that the movies are the best representation of that idea.

...I'm assuming you are referring to the movies.

Agree with all of that.  The lightsaber duels in episodes I-III were fantastic but overall the SW films are much more flawed than the LOTR films.

LotR all the way, even in gaming I always preferred medieval fantasy to space stuff <3
