Considering The X-Files was my bread-and-butter back in the 90s (goddess, has it been that long?), and yet I stopped watching it around season 5ish I think it was (after the first film).... and although I had gotten caught up online about everything that happened since then (including the second film)....

Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
I easily overlooked Mulder's constant monologues about the mythology (because after all, it's been 15 years since the series ended so people need to be brought back up to speed) - the major letdown for me was just how much this seemed to handwave away the major aspects of the original mythology, especially the whole thing with the greys, the black oil, the hybrids, the alien colonists, the shape-shifting alien bounty hunters/rebels, the Syndicate - all that was tossed aside and retconned as 'oh, it was all a smokescreen by the government to disguise the real aliens, who are friendly, and.. who kept being pulled to earth because H-bomb testing in the forties and fifties was screwing with their warp drives or something'... I mean, seriously?

I do admit though that the really big aspect of the original mythology has kind of since been invalidated anyway since the original series ended (that the alien 'colonization' - read, invasion - of Earth had been planned for the old not-so-Mayan-apocalypse date of December 21st 2012, and that they needed something to explain why that... kind of didn't end up happening for obvious reasons), but really, this was the best Chris Carter could come up with? In between that and the usual <insert government conspiracy of choice here> ramblings, this first episode was rather confused in it's pacing, and I hope it's not a sign of things to come with the rest of the series.

Ah well, it was still a blast, even overlooking the silly aspects of the episode (Skinner is still AD of the FBI even after 15 years? Wouldn't he have moved up to the top job by now? And seeing Cyrus from Caprica here again as a scientist working on future tech brought a smile (this time it's anti-gravity vehicles and not prototype Cylons :)). Funnily enough, the best part to me though... was the very last few seconds, seeing that chain-smoking magnificant bastard (smoking through a tracheotomy to boot!) - I admit I just roared then. ;)

Despite the negatives, I will definetely be sticking with the rest of this. :)

Re: The X-Files...

Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
We don't know for sure if that is all actual handwaving. Do we really want to take it on faith that everything that guy told Mulder is actually true? Or perhaps his story is the real cover story the conspiracy wants to feed Mulder. :) Episode One was okay though it had issues. It was nice to see Mulder and Scully together again. Episode Two was more in the groove than One, but it still didn't quite work. Episode Three... Things are getting back together nicely. If they keep going like this and the renewed mytharc plays out better in the coming episodes, I will be pleased.

Regardless, Mulder and Scully...  Like they said when the show was first on, David and Gillian have once in a generation chemistry.

The problem with the possibility of this entire retcon being a fake-out is they already used that exact plot at the end of season four.  Either they have pissed all over nine years and two movies of mythology or they're revolving their hugely anticipated comeback around a plot they stole from themselves (and did much better the first time).

I'm not defending it, I'm just pointing it out.  Nobody ever said Chris Carter is a genius at plotting. :)

Having said that though, and with the benefit of hindsight, ironically Fukiyama, I find myself now starting to agree with you
Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
about the entire fake-out retcon - looking back at it with a more critical eye the whole episode seems to be specifically designed to make Mulder (and by extension, the viewer), question everything they know about the mythology, after all, that was a fundamental element of the original series as well - in particular  I'm reminded of the classic original series season 3 episode Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space' which was also one big mindscrew (due to it's pacing, cinematography, dialogue multiple viewpoints) - juxtaposing that episode with the first episode of the new miniseries, and it does start to make sense in a weird, warped way.

And then start to scratch just beneath the surface, and the original mythology actually do begin to show through - the flying triangles, memory-erasing medical techniques - they were concepts from the very first episode of the first season of the original series (not the pilot, the one where Deep Throat was first introduced). So yeah, seeing this in a new light it does ring true - the only issue is that the whole thing still came across as muddled and confused and actually pushed the viewer away with a brutal slap across the face instead of teasing them with all kinds of questions answered with more questions.

Also, re Mulder and Scully's relationship -
Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
I think that Scully specifically stated that they've drifted apart due to Mulder's deepening depression and are now somewhat estranged
, so I have a feeling that will be a lingering plot thread throughout the rest of the miniseries (and potentially into a hypothetical second full series, if the rumours are to be believed).

Last Monday's The X-Files wasn't anything worth getting excited over.  A wasted opportunity.

Is anyone else watching this season of American Crime?

This last one wasn't the best either.  There's far too much comedy in these episodes for one thing.  Never thought I'd say this but The X Files isn't taking itself seriously enough.

I agree.  They really needed to decide on a tone, either for the season overall or for the individual episode.  This trying to be all things to all people is annoying.  And the second straight week of moralizing at the end of the episode, ugh.

Was better call saul season 1 good? I didn't watch it yet but I loved breaking bad.
Is it shaping up to be as good as breaking bad?

Overall, yes, it was very good. All episodes were strong on their own, but the latter half of that season is when the show as a whole started to really come into focus.

I wouldn't put it at Breaking Bad's level just yet, though.

See I've wanted to do that.  I already have Netflix and Hulu.  But we still need to have internet.  And since they bundle stuff it's like once you're paying for internet you might as well pay a little more for cable.
