I'm long overdue for a replay of FFVIII myself though every time I've tried to replay it since I first beat it, I tend to stop during disc 2 or 3. It does have one of my favorite video game settings and the soundtrack is simply amazing. A lot of the cast got the shaft in the character development department unfortunately and the plot gets really convoluted the deeper into the game you get. Despite that though, it does have its great moments. The Laguna segment of the ending cinematics gets me every time.

Let's Play Chrono Trigger
Let's Play The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past
Let's Play Final Fantasy VI

I have Persona 3, FFVII, FFVIII, FFVIX, Valkyria Chronicles, and at least one or two Tales games I've done this on over the last year or so.

Fuck Shit Stack.

I've always been a fan of the theory that Squall dies at the end of disc one and the rest of the game is his fever dream before finally succumbing to death at the end of disc 3.

The Hulk
Good Boy

It's a toss up between that and R=U as to which stupid theory pisses me off more.  None make remotely any sense.

You know the funny thing is though, nobody has these crazy theories about any other final fantasy game. None that I can really think of. Unless you count cheese weapon or being able to resurrect Aeris. But those aren't really theories about plot or anything like that.
It might just be because Final Fantasy 8s story is weird?

FFVII had some out there shit too. Anyone remember FFVII Mythologies?

I think it's more because the fanbase peaked out when VII and VIII were new and gradually petered out afterwards as the craze waned, so all the crazy is concentrated on those two.

It's you guys' fault

Well I beat it.  You know, I think junctioning to speed is pretty broken.  I was a little nervous fighting Omega Weapon because I'd never done it before and I thought he was going to wipe me out and... he got to go twice.  Then Lenore dropped about five thousand space rocks on his ass and Zell comboed the fuck out of him.  I couldn't get Lion Heart to come out though :/  Then fighting Ultimecia Squall didn't even show up in the party, it was Lenore, Quistis and Zell.  And Lenore dropped about five thousand space rocks on her ass, the end.  Anyway good game.  Many explosions occured for great justice.

Cool story. Was never a big fan of 8. I played it once when it came out, and that was it. There was just too much crazy shit and logic bombs going on in that game. I did spend about 80 hours on Triple Triad, though. That game in a game deserves a sequel.

I always believed that one of the reasons Final Fantasy VIII was shit on so much by various online communities at the time was due to the influx of all the new fans Final Fantasy VII brought in. Even today it's not unlikely to hear someone say that Final Fantasy VII was their first Final Fantasy game. Being in High School at the time (and also a surely teenager which was why I liked Squall so much back then) there was a lot of  questions among classmates like:

"Where is Cloud?"

"Does this take place in the distant future of VII?"

"Is this a prequel?"

"Is Squall Cloud and Tifa's son?"

Even with the internet at their disposal many people didn't realize that at the time each new Final Fantasy game was a new story with new characters and not a direct sequel.

Now I'm not trying to defend Final Fantasy VIII as a flawless game, because it definitely had some flaws. Just saying that a lot of its backlash seemed to come from this mindset and was in my opinion, unwarranted.

Edit: Achievement unlocked apparently as I did not notice the date of this thread and it's last post. Hope a necro bump isn't too frowned upon.

Yeah noobs :-P

When I first played this I remember trying to like this more than FFVII but ended up conceding some time later. I think it's mostly because FFVII failed to live up my expecations after the 3 year anticipation and having to follow up FFVI I was really hoping FFVIII would be that game to do what FFVII couldn't.

I always thought FFVIII was a very good game. I liked its visual style and attempt to try new things and the set pieces were amazing.

I never fell in love with the characters and didn't get into the story as much as the previous games though. And it was a game that was easy to overpower Squall so it's probably one of the easier games in the series (though to be fair FFVII and IX weren't that difficult either).

I was thinking that maybe if the game took a more evened and liberated split between playing with Squall and Laguna that would have made the game much better.

Yes, what of it?

I've come to the personal perspective that FF8 is the rpg for people that hate final fantasy games. The main reason I disliked it is because I played it like FF7, and wanted to grind it out. Reallizing this...actually a few months ago, makes me want to retry it again.

Squall should have choosen Quistis anyway. Any woman that would gatling gun a giant spider that is trying to kill you to save your ass is a keeper to me. I know that Rinoa is supposed to be a type of "fresh breath of air" to the military heavy environment Squall exists in, but I'm still a Trepie since 2000.

Edit: I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought Cid looked like Robin Williams in the game. It was just so striking even then.
