Review Scores worry me a bit though it only has 1 point higer than Final Fantasy XIII in Metacritic.

Also the IGN, Gamespot, and Gameinformer review scores are lower for FFXV when compared to FFXIII.

Enkidoh
Time Travelling White Mage

The sad thing is, after playing a couple of hours of chapter 1, I strongly believe now that the second half of Kingsglaive's story would have made a far better narrative to start the game off with than how the game actually started - where as all the trailers over the last couple of years made it seem the Imperial invasion of Insomnia was how the game was going to start (with the player taking control of Noctis as he tries to escape the city while evading the Empire
Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
after his old man got killed),
instead we got Final Fantasy Roadtrip XV....

Which does the game a grave injustice as the world is so utterly, totally beautiful, and even the all 'bro party I actually kind of like, their personalities didn't come across as testosterone-overdosed fratboys, their little coments and gentle teasing of each other constantly made me smile. Even Cidney Cindy seemed.... fitting in a way (where as originally I felt she was just a huge stereotype). I've heard it picks up later in the game, making this rather like XIII-2 in that regard (in that it too started off yawnworthy but picked up steam and greatly improved).

Don't get me wrong, personally I feel it is light years ahead of the garbage that was FFXIII, and marginally better than FFXII (which I also had a like/dislike relationship with but for different reasons), I just think that maybe Tabata cut out too much of what was planned when it was still VsXIII. I still like it though, but.... SE didn't entirelly hit  the mark with it.

Too queer to get out of bed

I'm currently in sidequest hell and it seems like some sidequest givers never actually run out of quests (Wiz I'm looking at you).

I'm the gal that actually *liked* the first half of FFXIII (The story and design kept you moving and made you feel you were never more than one step ahead of your persuers. When the game "opened up" it lost all momentum to me).

This is the opposite. While I question the design choice to leave so much backstory to an anime and movie (Seriously you need to watch Kingsglaive/Brotherhood to know where *anyone* is coming from), I'm enjoying it so far.

My head cannon is that after Noctis finds out Insomnia and his father have fallen, he becomes lost. He knows he has a mission, but at the point I'm at he has no real motivation to persue it. That's why he's so willing to get lost in side quests. He wants to feel less helpless and he's able to do that by doing small favors for people who just see him as "one of those young kids" instead of a Prince/King.

Advice: Turn on wait mode for combat. It keeps everything real time, but if you stop moving it pauses the game. Then you can take time to Libra an enemy and form a quick strategy for how to handle things.

Additional Advice: If your TV supports it, make sure to turn on screen fit or the equivilent. For whatever reason this game doesn't have a screen adjustment setting, and I found a lot of text spilling off the screen until I turned it on.

More Advice: Do the sidequests. The money to upgrade items etc helps a lot.

Last Advice: Buy the memories item of your favorite FF, put the music on and just drive.

I'm about 30 hours into the game now, on chapter 4. I was also worried about the scores before playing but I've come to realize they are judging it based on two things: A) That the game is incomplete without the movie and anime backstories and B) They are reviewing it from a gamers perspective and not a FF fan's perspective. Not to say a fan is going to let shit slide either, because I think everything since Hironobu Sakaguchi left square they have produce lackluster titles. Only exception in the last fifteen years has been their online efforts and the gameplay from FFXII.

All that being said, as far as I am in the game so far... this is everything I've wanted a FF to be. The world has captured me, I'm so content with doing sidequests because I'm that into the gameplay. Only GTA V has been fun enough for me to grind through sidequest after sidequest. The world reminds me of FFVII, VIII, XII, and XI at times. I can't believe I'll be able to fly around it in an airship! Depending on where the story takes me and how much the world opens up and how much there is to do after everything is said and done... it might be one of my favorite titles. 10, 12, and 13 I knew very early on what I felt about the games. With 15 I feel nostalgic as fuck and attached to the characters. Promto so far has gotten the most backstory and depth but I'm sure there's going to be some depth for each of the friends.

I reccomend to you this: Let go of what other people are telling you about it, let go of what you wanted it to be, and just savor the experience because it is the first really good entry in the series in 15 years. It actually feels like a Final Fantasy. BTW I'll also say the combat feels fantastic once you master it, this is what I would like a departure from turn based to be like. (holy shit @ all the animations being able to be displayed at once on screen!)

Be a kid again, pretend it's the first game you've played. It really blossoms when you stop comparing it to everything else.

Really glad to read something like this from people on this site. I won't be playing this for a while as my wife just gave birth to our daughter and I don't have the time to sink into a game like this on a console, and with the planned DLC I'd rather wait until it's all out and play it all at one time rather than piece meal.

But I've heard this same sentiment from a few places. I didn't hate FFXIII like some people did, but I definitely thought the series needed to see some drastic improvements going forward. Will continue to read some of the feedback from Final Fantasy fans rather than gamers per sae.

I've got about 2.5 hours into it. Still in the first zone running around finding treasure here and there. Really enjoy it so far.

I think it all comes in the little details. Yeah, they look like silly Nomura characters but the gas stations and dinners looks like things you'd find driving down route 66 in the midwest. Having the accurate Coleman camping supplies. The interactions between the bros. The combat is engaging and keeps  you thinking instead of just "press X to attack".

I've turned on Wait mode so I can use Libra better. But what do I do when I use leap strike to get away from battle? I'll be up on a rock or whatever and time stops so I can't just chill and heal. Is there something I'm missing here?

You could say that about any game, though. =P

Seriously, it seems that the majority are enjoying it, which is good. I wasn't impressed by either demo, but I will gladly pick it up for $20.

I'm skeptical of the Bro'd Trip theme the game seems to be wrapped in. It looks pretty corny. Any thoughts on that?

So I went out earlier and somehow had a copy of this with me when I arrived home, mystery innit.  First impressions after a couple hours are generally good but some issues are already under my skin and threatening to burrow deeper.  Chiefly the complete bastard of a camera and the overly chaotic mess that is the battle system.  Hopefully the latter will appear simpler with time, but that camera is going to be the bane of my FFXV experience, I can tell.

And holy fuck, if you're gonna buy this game, it cannot be stressed enough that you need to watch Kingsglaive first.  The game doesn't bother to set up the story, like, at all.

Could not have said it better or agree more.  I'm enjoying the hell out of this game.

Have to admit, so far, the more I play, the more I dislike it.  The battle system doesn't get any better and the story is god awful.  It's also insultingly unpolished for something in development so long.

Just so I can understand where you are coming from, which from the series was your favorite? I expected some people to not enjoy it as much, that's okay, but I really wish you were having as much fun as me. I can't speak on the story because I'm not finished with it, but so far I'm captured by the life Noctis has had.

True, but I can say that about this one and know a first time player would go on to play another game. If .Hack was my first game I'd of said screw video games, I'm going to craft beer for fun. The demo's are lackluster and don't really give you a proper taste other than scale of the areas in the world.

I have a group of friends that goes on camping trips together and road trips so it doesn't bother me. I feel after the anime I know each of the guys stories and where their hearts lay. A pack of "Bro's" is only obnoxious to me if they are alpha, gym rat, jocks who treat other people like trash. A group of guy friends exploring a world together... not annoying or corny at all. I think there is oppertunity in character development when there isn't a female present, much like real life. Guys have anxiety around females and have to act tough, but around their friends can be vulnerable and weak. The magic happens when real life friends pick up their weakend brother and lift them up. People say no female main is sexist. I think it's more sexist that men can't have an oppertunity to discover themselves without a female driving their motivations.

TLDR; I do not find it off putting and am enjoying it.
