I'm now 20 hours in and I've spent most of that happily doing side quests and soaking in the atmosphere. This game feels like such a love letter to fans, much like FFIX did. I think it might become my new favorite in the series, I'm enjoying it so much.

Fuck Shit Stack.

Is the story good? I'm not going to be able to pick it up for a while. But one thing I've hated about the past couple FF games was how convoluted the stories were.

This was my problem with the entries 10, 12, and 13. So far I am loving the world so much that the story isn't a main objective for me. I'll have to get back to you in a few dozen hours. I'm seriously having a blast. Makes me feel like a kid again.

Updating to add advice:

  • Keep a nice stock of Potions and Phoenix downs on you, after level 20 you'll need them a lot
  • Keep Repair kits on you
  • Buy all the Memory CDs from stores
  • Use magic as much as you like, it isn't hard to replenish
  • Upgrade your skill tree to allow for bonus exp an ap while driving/choco/etc
  • Keep fishing lines handy and stocked up!
  • Use trailers for sleeping often for the EXP bonuses but not always because you get story from campsites
  • Unlock the Libra ability on the skill tree to determine which type of magic and weapons to use
  • Do the tutorial!!!
  • Master Combat through hunts and other sidequests. It takes practice to get good.
  • Ignis group together limit is freaking helpful on saving potions

Aslo there is a prologue novel "Parting Ways" found here https://www.novacrystallis.com/2016/11/final-fantasy-xv-prologue-novel-parting-ways-released/

I'm 40 hours in and still in Chapter 3.  Level 38 (with 100k+ xp saved up) and I can't seem to stop doing hunts/side quests.  I'm loving every single second of this.

This is how I feel! I've had to force myself to do a story mission every once in awhile but I am doing it reluctantly because I'm enjoying the exploration and side questing so much. Its so backwards to what I normally do in a game.

I'm now 58 hours in and on Chapter 8.  I'm level 58.  Additional sidequests and hunts were added to this chapter so I'm back to doing them before continuing the story.  I'm still soaking it all up and enjoying it.  Really, really fun game.

Dungeon design in this game is fantastic.

Running into famous FF monsters through my exploration and fighting them has been unbelivably satisfying.

It's an underwritten, disjointed afterthought.  It's like they made a billion fetch quests then realised "shit, we have to write a story to go with this".

I have to disagree with you on FFX. I think the story hangs together quite nicely. Requires multiple play through a to catch all the nuance, which actually strengthens the game, not weakens it.

I think Final Fantasy's decline started with the release of X-2 and has been trending in the same general direction ever since. Not that there were no bright spots. I enjoyed their MMO's but the console series is now a decade and a half past its glory days.

The decline dovetails nicely with the move away from turn-based battles to achieve more mass market appeal.

Stumbling around in chapter 2, I like but don't love the game.

I don't mind the Coleman stuff because the camera rarely focuses on the logo but holy SHIT the Cup Noodles product placement is seriously distracting.  It was bad enough when Prompto was talking about how much he loves it, but then getting back to Hammerhead and realizing there's a giant fucking CUP NOODLES billboard right there made it real hard to take the game seriously.

The size and exploration is probably the best thing this game has.

My biggest gripe with the game is that the combat is kind of clunky and with so many action RPG's out there that do it so much better and given the games development time, this is pretty much unacceptable. The combat is essentially KH's but with cement shoes, which takes almost all the fun out of it.

So Sigh Ety

I've played about 2 hours and so far, I love the combat but the story hasn't started yet so I can't form any real opinions yet. I just know I like the combat a lot. LIterally everything about is well thought out and super fun.  More strategy than I expected!

I'm not impressed with the world so far, it looks just like the drive between LA and Vegas with a bunch of gas stations,  not much imagination into it at all. they literally took the exact scenery from that drive and threw it into the game. I'm not really into "large" worlds as much as I am interesting worlds. So far, the weakest part of the game is the world to me. It's all based on the first area though, so hopefully interesting areas open up and that changes. Desert areas tend to be the most dull designed in games anyway, I'm not sure why they chose to make that your first area.If I reach my first big town/kingdom that could change so fast, so we'll see how things go.

Also the "manual" driving is just idiotic. It's on  ;( very restrictive) rails. You have no actual control. What 's the point in manual drive mode? I guess its nice that they let you do that, but I'll have it on auto 100% of the time from here on out.

what I can safely conclude is already the game is light years ahead of FF13 in every way.

It's like Route 66 with weird fantasy rock outcroppings all over the place.

Beat the game after about 75 hours at level 70.  The combat was never dull and it's the best part of the game.  I love the gameplay.

I really, really wanted to like the story but it wasn't fleshed out enough.  Most of the story felt like the second disc of Xenogears.  Everything was happening off screen and there just wasn't enough details.  There were times where a character would ask why someone was doing what they were doing and it was then that I realized that I had no idea why either.  Not enough attention was paid to the development of the story or any character not named Noctis, Ignis, Prompto, and Gladiolus.  Even they could have used more backstory IMO.

It feels like they spent 9 years on the world and combat system and used the last year to quickly rush a story to put into the game.  I could have beat the story in 15-20 hours.  By far the shortest campaign in any FF.

Even with these complaints, I enjoyed the hell out of the game.  I can't gush enough about how fun it was to explore and run into random FF bosses that were 20-30 levels ahead of me and I'd spend a good 20-30 mins trying to take them down.  It was so satisfying.  I just wish they would have put more effort into the story.  I really think I would've enjoyed the story they were trying to tell had it been fleshed out.

I completed the game yesterday and have an opinion on the main story. While the set up of the story was amazing it failed to deliver a "golden years of final fantasy" experience by a large margin. I've finally realized what I feel has been missing in the story telling of the games FFX- Current... and that is mystery. FFX started the habbit of telling you what was going to happen before it did. You're on a journey and this is what is going to happen. While there may be small surprises along the way, nothing was comparable to FFIX's
Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
reveal of Terra
,  FFVII's reveal
Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
of sephiroth and bigger plot beyond avalanche
, etc etc.

The element of surprise has been missing since X. I feel like the linear portions of the game were rushed and overall the main storyline is short and not well thought out at all. I found myself missing the ideas presented in FF Versus XIII where a king was teaching his boy how to be kingly (the soup scene) and saddened to learn that almost all the stuff shown before had been removed aside from character models and two of the cities.

I am happy to hear they are adding content to the game to fill in some gaps. I do feel that the paid DLC to see what happened to Promto, Ignis, and Gladios when they exited portions of the main storyline is a rip off and should have been included in the main game. I'll still pay it though.

I am far from finished with the game, however. I have had such an amazing time exploring the world and doing sidequests that I plan on playing all the additional stuff to completion.

After seeing review scores I knew there would be shortcomings, so instead of anticipating this as a perfect entry I chose to come in with the viewpoint that it is a work of art that is attempting to emulate it's predecessors as much as it can. The design team for the first time in FF history (14 aside) took into account of what fans of the series really wanted. The problem is, the people that are being outspoken about what they want are most likely new comers to the series (PS2 erra) and have expressed everything but concern about the game's story. The director met with the series creator and asked what makes a FF game. I didn't agree with his response and think it might have been a bit stubborn. So I'll answer that question myself.

To make a great FF game you must have the following ingredients:

  • A mind blowing story that affects the player emotionally but also challenges a real world viewpoint
  • A World filled with creative cities that are unique and fantastical
  • Characters that have personal struggles and flaws and face hurdles that develope their lives
  • Great and intelligent battle gameplay
  • Deep possibilities for exploration on foot, chocobo, car/buggy, airship all in real time (non linear)
  • Dungeons that have intelligent puzzles
  • Mini games that add depth to the game world
  • Music that captures the moment and feels like if you listened to it before seeing anything about the game you could predict the tone of that area/level/scene
  • Hours upon hours of side content
  • NPCs that reward you with further knowledge about story/world details/lore/history
  • 40-60 hour main story campaign, anything less is unacceptable

FFXV (so far) has hit more of these points than the previous three offline entries. The game world is rich, and it was so well done that I just wish it was larger than three cities and a few generic towns. The hidden dungeon after game completion is one of the coolest most intelligent designed anything I've ever seen in a game. More of those please!!! I got to fly an airship in a massive open world, something only GTA has been able to accomplish thus far. The battle system is everything I wanted an action RPG to feel like. The main characters in part one (open world) were amazing and I really enjoyed their bonding. Part two (linear)
Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
I didn't enjoy how rapidly Gladios changed temperment towards Noctis. They said several weeks passed... what happened to lead their bond to be tested to that extent. While I did enjoy PS1 era games choice to let us fill in our own ideas of what happens in stories, I feel like the gladios/noctis beef should have been on camera.
From what I can tell 75 hours into the game, I still have a lot to explore and do, so it is rich in extra content.

I was lucky enough to get the 2D game that was a preorder bonus from gamestop which is supposed to provide further details on the kings journey with cid. I will play through that soon and give any details if it enhances the story much or not.

My current stats
58 hours prior to getting on the boat (I felt like not enough main story was fleshed out to warrant leaving open world gameplay at this point)
5 hours to complete the 2nd half of the game (ugh)
15 hours on post game exploration. 6 of which was in the Hidden Dungeon alone lol. Got my Black Cloak which is the tits btw
Now I'm on to research the epic equipment choices and build my way up to take on the turtle.

I'm 100% convinced they will be doing a 15-2, they have to recoup their 10 year money pit. I would be more okay with this if they explained it would be a trilogy beforehand. My guess is it will be the story through another perspective.

The ending of this game
Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
pissed me off an confused me to no end. Are they in the crystal afterlife or what?

In FFX, how does your conversation with Yunalesca in the Zanarkand Temple not count as a big reveal?
