I thought the reason for the delay was so they don't have to do patches.

I know how they work

How in God's name can a game that was in development for TEN YEARS still not be finished?

Maybe if they spent less time with the product placements and the story this wouldn't be needed?

Man of the Sea
This space for rent

Made it to Chapter 6; 32 hours in, everyone around lvl 41-42. I am absolutely loving this game, warts and all.

This is not true; FFXV didn't actively begin development until 2012-2013.

So what were they doing during the first 6-7 years?

Man of the Sea
This space for rent

Working on other projects, mostly.

Seriously, Final Fantasy Versus XIII only ever existed as a handful of very disparate concepts; it was never a full game, nor was there likely ever even a vision for one. Older interviews with Nomura highlight a bunch of ideas and concepts he wanted to try, from real-time combat to open world exploration, but never gave any sense of an underlying game that tied it all together. Hell, the only piece of gameplay footage ever really shown of Versus is Noct fighting a behemoth in a contained city environment.

XV's narrative problems seem to mostly stem from Tabata & co. essentially reworking some of Nomura's overall notes for a trilogy into one game, along with incorporating their own ideas, and doing a very bad job of it. The most glaring example of this is the switch in female leads from Versus' Stella to XV's Lunafreya.

God damn the story falls apart in the linear portion. So sad they couldn't get that right. It's like looking at the most beautiful sweet smelling rose and hoping it blossoms to be it's full potential but just wilts and dies. The rose was still sweet smelling and beautiful in the beggining.
Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
Thank god for the time travel.

I finished the game and I must say Chapter 13 is possibly the worst experience I ever had in a video game.

It almost feels like the developers missed FFXIII and tried to make something even worse than that.

That said the finale was great.

Also the main quest is possible the easiest in the franchise. I don't think I game overed once unless it was intentional.

When does the linear portion begin? I'm in Chapter 9 but I gained the ability to go to the open world anytime I rest at an inn, so it's just as non linear as before. Is there a point where that access is cut off for awhile?

The linear portion begins with Chapter 9, but you can always go back to the open world -- you're never locked out of anything.

So I just beat the game.  I actually enjoyed the 2nd half of the game a lot more than the 1st half. The locations from Chapter 9 and on were much more interesting, and I there was a lot of plot development, rather than a few story missions and a bunch of sidequests like the opening half. It was a fun game overall, but the story had a lot more potential than it delivered on. Not sure why people hated Chapter 13 so much, I was fine with it. It was annoying that they removed the sprint feature but other than that I liked it.

This video explains how I feel about the story, MAJOR END GAME SPOILERS of course:
