Thanks Mavilu. Son is doing great.

I can see why so many people are giving it the grade that they are.  This game makes me feel like a kid playing the original Zelda again.  You can do anything right from the start.  The sense of exploration and wonder is incredible.  I'm going to spend a hundred hours in this game without furthering the plot, I bet.

My one complaint is the controls.  Jump, sprint, and crouch are not where they should be.  You can't map the controller either (hoping you can in a future patch).
It took me about 20 hours to stop occasionally attempting to use B button to attack. Old habits die hard.

I love the way the way you acquire the Master Sword in this game. It's beautifully simple in implementation, but it results in a roller coaster of anticipation followed by disappointment each time you try and fail. And then when you finally succeed it's a huge emotional payoff.

Holy crap who thought the breakable weapons were a good idea?

There are a couple of neat touches here and there but this is essentially just another Zelda game, do not believe any reports that this is some kind of breakout title or revolution for the series.  The review scores are mental and I can only attribute them to being bought or affection for the series.  This isn't even close to being one of the best games ever.

This game, by all stretches of the imagination, is not just another Zelda. It really is the new bar/standard. I've never seen such a polished piece with this much scale and detail. It alone validated my WiiU purchase. Well worth the wait.

Gave in, got the Wii U version.  Am throttled by my promise to only play while my kids are around to watch/contribute, so I haven't gotten much playtime in.  Mostly just wandering around, going from shrine to tower to tower to shrine.

The last thing I remember trying to do was climb the stairway leading up to the A-something ruins, with all the flying guardians patrolling.  Didn't figure it out, but it's been in my head all weekend.  The open-ended nature of the puzzles really gets into my brain.

Very satisfying to repeatedly swat the same bokoblin off the side of a cliff every time I try to climb the stairway, though.

Horizon's Aloy constantly rolling to dodge has spoiled me.  The lock targetting and lack of a real reliable dodge are killing me repeatedly.  Just need time to adapt, I guess.

UPDATE: Managed to get most of the way up the climb by bypassing the stairs completely and climbing the sheer rock and structural walls. Got struck by lightning and died.

"Man I could really use a tip about how to deal with lightning."
TIP: "Take off  your fuckin' metal gear, ya scrub."
"Thanks, Nintendo!"

Managed to bypass the stairs again and get to the top without getting struck by lightning, stumbled into one of those big guys with one horn.  Tried to run, got blasted into oblivion by a guardian I'd missed.

Managed to bypass the stairs again and get to the top without getting struck by lightning or stumbling into the big guy.  Got far enough in that the guardians weren't an issue anymore.  Realized it was really cold and I was going to freeze to death.  Thought:  I'll just rush up the tower and eat to keep myself from freezing, I have enough food stockpiled...

... discovered that the tower is covered in poisonous purple shit.  Managed to not die, barely, but unable to reach top of tower with only five hearts.  Bailed out, found a horse, rode around to feel better.  This friggin' game, man.

I can't remember being this obsessed and consumed by an offline console game. I really want to know how this game got made.

I was just in a very dark place, without a torch, and realized I could nock a fire arrow, not release it, and use that as a torch. I could also fire it into the distance and it would illuminate the objects in its path. Then it lit some grass on fire and I was able to see around that area.

I mean if this were ten years ago I'd be able to understand, but this much polish, scale and detail are practically standard these days.  Zelda just finally got with the times.

They got with the times and took it to another level no developers have come close to taking it. It's seamless. The world is simultaneously barren and filled with things to do and explore. This is a game people will be holding up as a reference point 10, 15, or 20 years from now.

In 50+ hours of gameplay I've never come close to being bored. I feel a complete sense of ownership over this experience even though I know I am being guided in subtle nonintrusive ways.

The only time I stopped playing was when real life demanded it.

Nah, I simply don't see a new level here.  You're probably right that people will reference it for years but that is for the same reason it gets a pass on its major flaws now; it's Zelda.  Stupid rhyming gimmick aside, this video lists some of my problems with it, although I get the feeling this guy is ultimately far more forgiving than I.

I think I'm more on the side of Hulk and Jim Sterling at this point. I think BotW is a good game, but I just can't seem to get into it as much as everyone else is. As Atma said - there are plenty of fun little details everywhere, but they just don't seem to culminate into some big huge fun thing for me. At this point I can't stand the item durability system. It has taken a ton of the fun out of the game for me. And while there are plenty of fun distractions - things to find, things to collect, etc. there just isn't anything strongly pulling me forward in the game.

As for the "subtle guidance" aspect - at this point I can't help but feel like Dark Souls/Bloodborne did it better. Zelda hands holds more than those games and just doesn't give you enough meat to chew on. If they really wanted you to use multiple weapon types then why didn't they do it more like Dark Souls where different enemies are best countered by different weapon types. I mean shit, how many weapons have I had to waste just cutting down trees trying to collect piles of wood. There is no excitiement in getting a cool new shield or weapon knowing it's just going to break. Eventually your entire inventory is just "cool gear" that you wind up having to blow through to make room for more junk.

In what way do you think Breath of the Wild holds your hand? I can understand that criticism regarding past titles in the series, most notably Skyward Sword, but I don't see how it applies to this game per se.

Regarding weapon durability, I felt it incintivizes you to use different weapons and think strategically about when to pull out the big guns. "Wow I got this awesome weapon from that chest. Should I use it to bulldoze this trash in a Bokoblin camp? Or, should I save it for a fight that really matters and use my store of ordinary weapons in this confrontation?" It emphasizes the survival element of the game. Degredation also results in less throing-away of items given your finite number of item slots.

But I've never been an item-hoarding packrat as a gamer. If that were my mentality I can see the weapon-degredation system as annoying.

One more aside: I learned you can take note of which enemies drop the nice weapons, and farm a new one after the next Blood Moon occurs. This is a pretty painless because the combat system is a blast and the dorp rates are pretty much 100%. For instance, I put markers on all the "Major Test of Strength" combat trial shrines which lets me farm them for an infinite supply of Guardian++ weapons/sheilds.

While it doesn't hold your hand very much in relative to past Zelda titles - for some reason I keep seeing it being compared to Dark Souls, which is obtuse in addition to famously not holding your hand.

If this were Legend of Zelda: Linky Souls then you would emerge from the Shrine of Ressurection and the Old Man wouldn't be there whatsoever. You'd see the fire and expect to interact with it to see what it does. You'd see the apples and the game would never tell you to throw them on the fire and bake them, you'd just have to figure it out or you'd find the baked apples and put it together without being told. You'd be expected to find that first buried tower on your own and activate it just because it looks similar to the podium that gave you the shiekah slate in the first place and was at the bottom of the natural path down the hill, etc. etc. Dark Souls 1 was famous for just plopping you down at the world hub and giving you no real direction whatsoever, letting you follow paths that were more than likely to lead you to your immediate death until you eventually picked the path that wasn't so challenging or following the one vague as hell NPC instructions of "you need to go up.....and down". There are no quest markers telling you where to go. You figure it out based upon path of least resistance/clues from the little bit of diaglogue you do get/clues from item descriptions.....kind of like Morrowind which is another title that I keep seeing BotW compared to but yet BotW always gives you the big yellow dot to follow like Skyrim. You should have to activate that tower and find the 4 shrines on the great plateau by sight alone and do all of them without any prompting of the old man. Cooking is fully explained to you, Elixr making is fully explained to you, Taming a horse is fully explained to you, etc. etc. etc. just by talking to the people you find while following the yellow dot. I don't feel like I've discovered how to do anything in this game on my own - it's always told to you by an NPC or a Shrine Tutorial or for chrissakes the loading screen of all places. Can you imagine going the whole game and then finding out after you beat it that you didnt know how to do the parry? Or the weapon flurry? Or shield surf?  Like right now I don't feel like there is any mystery here more than the usual "there is a hidden fairy fountain under this obviously bomb-able rock" found in every Zelda game except that that bombable rock is now in an out of the way field way over there that you have no reason to go and explore really and the only mystery is how you ever found that rock in the first place. That said, I'm only about 12 hours into it.

If this was Linky Souls then the enemy encounters themselves would be the incentive to change weapons. A spear/rake/pitchfork is more effective against enemies with a long reach or that punish you for being too close, etc. Dark Souls has the whole RPG system too though that incentivies you to use weapons that are compatible with your Stats. Obviously that would be going to far with Zelda. The parrying thing is almost straight out of dark souls, except there it depends on the shield you are using and the weapon the enemy is using, etc. and you basically have to figure all of that out on your own. Dark Souls has weapon durability, but it's used as an incentive for you to stop what you're doing and go back to your main hub, which is the only place you can level up, buy many things, etc. Even then you could usually do an entire area of Dark Souls including Boss without having to worry about repairing your weapons. I feel like Witcher 3 is the same way about durability, but it doesn't have the weapon types so it's kind of moot here. I like the idea of durability making you find a town and come in out of the wild every once in a while more than forcing you to use a boko club over and over cause the rest of your inventory is really shiny swords.

The Zelda team's commitment to beauty and minimalism mean that you will never see a full RPG iteration of Zelda. Link will never level up. Link will never have stats beyond hearts, magic bar, and stamina wheel. Gear will rarely have stats communinicated to the user beyond attack or defense power.

The reason is that each level of RPG minutia distracts from the adventure and takes you out of Hyrule. Zelda is at its core an adventure series. No RPG elements will be brought in that detract from adventure. If you're not down with that, no problem.

Gotta be honest, everything defense of it you make sounds like "the problem lies with you, not the game".  I bought Witcher 3 yesterday, played a few hours at the very most, not even sure if I love it yet but it just does literally every single thing better than this game.  It's crazy how much praise BOTW is getting for not even being half the gamre this is.  I really feel it's a matter of the game being seriously flawed and not just some difference in tastes.

Time will tell. Let's see how it holds up with time. That's what makes a classic, more than reception by critics at the time.

Yesterday I figured out that fairies are a type of critter and you can throw them into a cooking pot to make restoration elixirs.

I didn't want to be personal but it really is "the problem lies with you". I've met a few other people who are similar to you in the respect that almost everything in life seems to be a disappointment to them. Oozing Pessimism. Like it's cool to hate a widly accepted thing and cool to like a universally unaccepted game. Are you the one fan of E.T. on Atari? I'm just curious, could you provide a top 20 list of games you think are just amazing? I need to know what the Anton Ego of video games approves of.

Different strokes for different folks, but I see you comment on things like the whole world is wrong and your opinion is the final judgement, when really I am not sure your opinion is great advice at all. I'm serious on the top 20 thing, I would really like to know if we agree on anything. Lets start with favorite FF game?
