I'm thinking about trying this series. What's the best game to start the series with? My (very) cursory browsing seems to point at Fire Emblem Awakening on the 3DS.

Caveat: I've never actually finished a FE game. That said, I've played both Awakening and Fates.

I honestly though the Fates games were easier to get into, gameplay wise, but if you haven't read about it already, it is two games. Each game tells the same story, but sort of from a different POV. Basically they main character was taken as a child and depending on which game you get, decides to either go back to his biological family (Birthright) or stay with his adoptive family (Conquest). I've heard Birthright is easier but Conquest has a more engaging story. I personally played Conquest, but as I said, never finished. I was having a good time with it but eventually got distracted by other games and never went back.

When Awakenings first came out, everyone loved it but I haven't heard much since. When I played it, it started out well and the story seemed engaging, but there was alot going on there for me, gameplay systems wise. I ended up deciding it just wasn't worth it to me as I felt like I was having to micromanage too many things (you have to manage relationships between the characters and eventually characters can even have kids).

For Reference, I loved Final Fantasy Tactics on PSX and Tactics Ogre. Haven't really been able to get into the FFT GBA games or other strategy games because again, I feel like they wind up getting bogged down in too many systems.

My stereotype of tactical RPGs is that they become tedious grindfests with a huge amount of repetition. But I'm willing to do it every now and then. I liked FFT and Disgaea.

Fire Emlem Awakening is awesome, and you should play it, and I would say on Normal Difficulty grinding is almost a complete non-issue.

One word of advice: there are lots of classes in the game and it's a bit easy to get intimidated by the scale when you start transitioning your characters from one class to another.  Don't worry about it.  Every class change is reversable, so just go with what seems fun.  If you make a mistake (which is pretty unlikely, every class has great qualities) you can just switch again later.

Don't worry, I'm just watching you.

I've played every US Fire Emblem release except Radient Dawn (and have completed most of them). From a new player's standpoint, I would say that the best Fire Emblems to start with are FE7: Blazing Sword (Just known as Fire Emblem in North America) or Fire Emblem Awakening. Both of these games deliver a good bit of the core gameplay without demolishing a new player with immediate difficulty. Plus the stories/characters in both kept me engaged.

I would probably recommend that a newcomer doesn't play Fire Emblem Fates first as the difficulty ramps up really early, and I just don't feel involved with the very large cast of bland personalities.

I picked up Awakening at GameStop the other day for a used copy. They're charging $50 for a used copy, which seemed pretty steep.

If I like it I'll probably buy the one coming to Switch next year.

You know what kind of emblems suck?  The fire kind.  Ice emblems are better.

Ignore my ironic avatar. Fire Emblem is terrible. Go play Suikoden Tactics.

Suikoden Tactics has the best story of any tactical game ever.  I would even call it "inspiring" and "life-changing."  Gameplay is also way better than that FFT crap.  Blame yourself or God if you suffered through that game.
