I dunno.  After all that build up, seeing them finally hook up was a bit of an auntie-climax.

But srsly

Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.

We knew the wall had to go, but seeing it happen was something else.

So, I wonder where we're falling in terms of future book events.  Whether this is more or less the cliffhanger that'll end Winds of Winter, or if we've CliffNotes'ed well past that into A Dream of Spring by now.

Unpopular opinion of that last scene:
Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
They could have picked a more interesting place to breach. Eastwatch is a new location and we've never really grown attached, and also it looks like crap. I was fully expecting them to hit Castle Black and permanently render us bereft of one Dolorous Edd Tollet.

Also now we know why the Army of Night took so long: except when engaged in combat or an actual chase they seem to just sort of slowly plod along Romero-zombie style. At that rate it probably took them six months to get from, say, Craster's Keep to the Wall.

"I don't believe you." I've never been more proud of a sister-raping child-attempted-murdering fictional-character in my life.

I stopped watching after season 5, and I have no intention to catch up, so I have been reading spoilers the past couple of days.

It's interesting that after all of the twisting and intertwing story arcs and political backstabbing, the smoke is finally beginning to clear off, only to reveal a pretty conventional and straightforward fantasy story.

That's because D&D are very conventional storytellers once they ran out of real material. (The "future" stuff they got from GRRM are Cliffs Notes at best.)  And even while there was book material, come to think of it.

Season 7 was at least nice spectacle, though very much dumbed down from the earlier seasons. It's almost like D&D admitting they can't handle the depth of GRRM's real story after all the fuck-ups of some of Season 4 and all of Season 5, so they used Seasons 6 and 7 to say "fuck it" and cut down all of the intricate plotlines to their bare bones. Which, again, made for entertaining TV a few times, but no longer engaging on the level of the earlier seasons, or of a good number of other current TV shows.

It hints at a very plausible reason why Martin has had writer's block for several years. If this is the broad brush-strokes of the end game he's trying to set up, a thousand strands going in and a a big, simplistic strand coming out, perhaps he has been able to get there in a way that is narratively, emotionally, and intellectually satisfying. At that point, one of a few things will happen: you will beat your head against the wall trying to pound out the end game you wanted, you will go back to the drawing board and think of a new endgame that can flow reasonably from what came before, or you split the difference and modify the end game just enough to work good enough.

If he's a perfectionist, one of the first two options could end up taking a long time to finish, if you finish at all. Look at the guy, he's a walking risk for heart disease or stroke.
