Paris Terrorist Attacks

128 confirmed dead with many, many more wounded. The official death toll is expected to go up, too. Most of the bloodshed happened at an Eagles of Death Metal concert, though the band itself managed to escape through backstage doors. The accounts of what happened on social media inside the concert hall were chilling, to say the least.

I know we have a couple of FFO members from France. I hope that they weren't in Paris last night, and if they were, I hope we can get some confirmation that they're safe and sound.

Vive la France.

Yeah, I was waiting for something like this to happen. It looks like Europe is taking the hotseat once again to human conflict. The problem is that some first generation children of immigrant Muslims are going to the middle east to experience their culture and being recruited and radicalized over there. They end up fighting and going back "home" to Europe, where they plot Jihad against innocent people. It's a bad problem that I see spreading.

I think the President's decision to close the borders last night was a prudent move. I haven't watched the news yet today, but my heart goes out to the victims and their families.

Yep, still gaming

Yes... I'm trying to remember the name of one of them, short name, artist (and a very good one, too) we exchanged candy many years ago, when we did that at FFO...Kal?
I hope he is fine, my niece and her husband where vacationing in Paris and they left for England the afternoon before, missed he whole thing by hours.
What a crazy thing, I sure hope this is a theat we can soon neutralize, but I fear it's here to stay.

I'm going to try SCIENCE!

Yeah this is horrible, but what worries me more than the attack itself is the backlash against muslim populations in Europe. Already Slate is reporting Poland is pulling out of the EU's refugee resettlement program, and if the French government takes further steps against their Muslim citizens its only going to increase alienation and feed into terrorist recruiting. At some point the question has to be asked "Why aren't we assimilating these people? What are we doing wrong that they would find something like ISIS attractive?" Which is not say this attack or any other was invited, and of course we need to fight the people who've already decided we need to die like ISIS, just as we had to fight Al Qaeda after 9/11. But unless we pair that with a conversation on how we can make room for muslims in our cultures and societies, the only question we'll ever get to ask is what the NEXT group we'll have to fight is.

Examining why European states haven't been able to assimilate Muslim immigrants is important.  But the evidence so far is pointing away from home grown terrorists.

I don't care for the idea of assimilating a culture.  Instead I feel that we should be celebrating their culture and traditions just as much as we do others instead of making them feel like outcasts or unwanted guests.  That, more than anything, breeds discontent and a desire to feel wanted and celebrated, which ISIS does...  and warps into anger against the west.  Not saying that everyone is like this, by any means, but much of the western mentality (and unfortunately the governments of the western countries share this view) is that we will deal with those who identify as Muslim being here, maybe, but we'd much rather them not be.  If I were surrounded by people who I knew didn't really appreciate me being there, I might grow discontent and come to hate it to.  And I might be attracted to people who at least support who I am.  I would hope that I would not be warped  by ideals that are not mine, but this isn't often the case, especially when the one spouting those hateful and murderous ideals has accepted you with open arms in the first place.

I must have missed this thread at the time because there doesn't seem to be a post of me launching a well deserved barrage of insults at you for this monumentally idiotic thought.
