I just recently rewatched Soul Eater (bought the blurays on sale) and yeah, it almost gets there on several occasions, but never really quite does--they do talk about it, but never for too long before, you know, actually fighting. The energy and art style of the series is what makes it so fun; it's certainly no Brotherhood when it comes to quality of writing.

Gasp! I'm actually watching a show, for the first time in ages. =O (I'm bad about that.) I've started watching Princess Tutu, and I'm fairly certain it was made specially for me.
Damn, woman, it's about time. What caused this? Shigan and I gushing about it a few weeks ago? Heh.

No, actually, I didn't see any of that. It was recommended to me by someone elsewhere who compared it to a trilogy of books I read and loved earlier this year.

Started rewatching Cowboy Bebop the other day.

I forgot how good this series is.  Everything about it.  It's hard to believe it's almost fifteen years old.  It feels like it could have been made recently.

I just started rewatching Cowboy Bebop this week, too. Good stuff. I've actually only ever watched it once. Made such a strong impression I haven't felt the need to rewatch it until now, some years later. I think I'm gonna rewatch Outlaw Star next; I don't think I've ever seen it in its entirety uncut (as in non-Toonami version) despite owning the series on DVD for years.

Ah, well, all the same, it is indeed good stuff. I got a whole lot more out of it when I rewatched it this summer than I did the first time I saw it. Though Mith is a huge fan so I guess I can't blame you for being wary...

More delicious meta in that story than you can shake a feather duster at.

Haha, I actually didn't know/remember that she liked it. I wasn't wary, I just had little knowledge of it.

And yes, the meta is oh so tasty. I'm big into fairy tales and stories that are about stories, so this is perfect for me.

Stories about stories? Why stop there? This is like a story about a story about a story, or something. Tutu is layered, baby. One of my favorite lines in the show is from the narrator, I think in the second half. Can't remember it verbatim off the top of my head, but it goes something like, "A prince without a heart, a knight who fears battle, a villain without resolve, and a princess who cannot express her love." I love this show. You should check out this AMV (nevermind the whole show is pretty much a classical music AMV, heh)--even though the music choice may seem a little odd for the series, it's a great AMV. Some spoilerish footage in there, though, if you'd rather avoid that. Some of it won't be spoiler, being out of context in the AMV, but some will be regardless.

But yeah, that is Princess Tutu... tragically unheard of. Being about ballet was a pretty big strike to begin with, but I don't think ADV's presentation of the series helped much... seriously, Krahe looks like such a whore on that older box art, what were they thinking?

Aaaaaah, there's real, actual discussion of anime happening in this thread!  Satisfaction GET~

I haven't started something new since I saw Dennou Coil, but I'll probably grab something from my "downloaded at the start of the year" batch; maybe Kemonozume or Michiko & Hatchin.  I also recently got the Professor Layton animated movie, which I'll probably watch within the next week, as well as the first half of the original Mobile Suit Gundam TV series in the new re-release that (finally) has the Japanese voice track and is printed from the nice-looking R2 remasters. I want to start watching that, but with no ETA for when the second half of the series comes out - and with my predilection for liking to have all of a series before I really dig down into it, if possible - it looks like I might be waiting a while (unless I want to give in and watch the second half on my fansubs...).  There's also those Patlabor TV series DVDs I scored at bargain basement prices earlier this year, so it's not that I lack stuff to watch...I'm just indecisive.

I am completely perplexed by the number of smart people in my life that either like or don't mind Soul Eater where I thought there would be some guaranteed hate.  I read one volume of the manga and I was like "Welp, that's it for me."  There was literally nothing about it that made me want to come back or read more.  I think in a thread back on FFO, I said something to the effect of, "This is the kind of series that I would've flipped my grits over if I discovered it in high school, or when I was a lot newer to anime watching, but now it just elicits a shrug and an 'eh, it's not really for me."  I still hold that opinion on it.  I hardly even read Naruto anymore (rather, I just have a lot of catching up to do, I guess), and Soul Eater wasn't even nearly as interesting as that, or One Piece, or Bleach before Bleach was just a bunch of people wearing black hakamas and fighting in non-detailed background locales.

Also...hold on now Veers.  Calling Luna "woman" and "baby"?  I though I was the only one who could get totally fresh with her.  Sure, it all ends with a giant fist and a smoldering crater in the center of my face, but...uh...old habits die hard!

That reminds me that I ought to watch Princess Tutu, since I already like all of its component elements: classical music, faerie tales, plays, etc.  That's also the perfect time to re-recommend Violinist of Hamelin, lest it be forgotten in the mists of time.  Sure, the budget is in serious competition for "the lowest anime budget I've seen," but the story is compelling enough that I mostly forgive it for its unchecked use of panning and scanning over still scenes.  Also: classical music.  Hamel uses Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite offensively, almost like stores do during the Christmas season!

Well, tenk, I can't speak for Howie, but for me, I guess Soul Eater just scratches that rare little itch for silly shounen in the right way.  One Piece is supposedly great, but it's off-puttingly long so I've avoided it.  Stuff like DBZ and Bleach are just boring, both in writing and in presentation.  Even good ol' Kenshin has an unbearable TV series adaptation, and the manga, much as I loved the story, has plenty of shounen trappings that bogged it down at times.  Soul Eater, as mentioned, is certainly not high quality writing (way too much explanatory dialog, discussion of powers, one-dimensional characters [albiet effectively used ones], plot is very simplistic, etc.) but what it has, style, action, and humor, it uses to good effect, which is what, to me, elevates it above most shounen out of the relm of "ho-hum."

Speaking of Monster over in the FFO thread, I've finally gotten around to that one as well.  My reaction has been something like "fantastic story, boring anime."  Seriously, the story is awesome.  However, the anime is mostly people sitting around talking and really does nothing to take advantage of the medium, so as a visual work it's not very interesting to watch.  That said, the down-to-earth, realistic style does suit the story, and  I'm still loving it... so much delicious bad end.  Emotionally powerful, I'd highly recommend it to anyone who likes strong character-driven suspence or character studies.

Anyway, how about that new season?  I saw one mention of Guilty Crown and haganai on the previous page, but otherwise seems quiet.  Here're my thoughts on what's new or continuing this fall:

Mawaru Penguindrum 1-19 - Still really, really enjoying this show.  The mix of quirky humor, creative and downright heavy visuals, the themes... it's all so good.  I really love the art and camera direction, and I love how effective the show is at display rather disturbing concepts with such PG imagery.  However, as we close in on the end of the series in the coming weeks, I can't help but feel like the show lacks some direction in this half.  The show hasn't exactly been fast paced, but at least the first half or so had several things (mostly the diary thing with Ringo) that really propelled the narrative along.

Now, we seem to be missing that as the show spends episodes filling in backstory with several subtle but no very strong destinations in sight.  One thing about Penguindrum is that on an episode-by-episode basis, the show has generally been very strong, and while I don't think that has changed much, lately it feels like the cohesiveness is missing and there's more (unfortunate) emphasis on an episodic nature.  I still look forward to the episodes every week with an anticipation I haven't had since Madoka, but I'm starting to wonder if things are gonna come together for a strong finish or if they're just gonna putter out with a wimper.  I would definitely recommend checking the show out, though the ending may (or may not--I hope not) change my stance there.

Boku ha Tomodachi ga Sukunai[ 1-8 - AKA haganai is...  well, I watched the promo/OVA, thought it looked like garbage, and dismissed the show... at least until Kyo pestered me to watch some and... what do you know, the show is actually genuinely funny.  I mean, it's still fanservice-ridden game and anime humor for the most part, but the show pretty much has two modes: Mode A is when someone (usually Yozora) is trolling someone else in the cast, while Mode B is more standard harem/ecchi comedy.  Mode A is where haganai really shines, and fortunately the show is frequently in that mode.  Not the kind of show I would recommend to my sister or anything, but certainly something for those who enjoy nerd humor without Lucky Star being involved.

Chihaya Full/Chihayafuru - Actually only watched one episode of this so far.  I liked it, but coming off my recent Bunny Drop slice of life high, and generally being long burnt out on high school dramas (which is where this show looked like it was heading), I put it on the back burner for now.  I've heard pretty much only good things about it, so I'll get back to it when I have some extra time.

Guilty Crown 1-3 - Oh boy.  I'm not even sure what to say about this show.  It's a complete wreck.  It's like the textbook definition of "so bad it's so good."  Production values are high, so the show is visually gripping, but the writing...ugh.  This show is downright offensive in the way it baits with such a strong concept then, bam, next thing you know it's throwing in high school uniforms, accidental boob groping, and alkjfdhgkadjhgakugakcsjgg.  Guilty Crown is obviously a show you're supposed to switch your brain off and just enjoy but I can't do it.  There's just so much that screams wasted potential that the show makes me want to get angry at the writers.  I've heard from people who shared my opinion of the first few episodes that it's gradually getting "better" but I'm not sure how much of that is the show's writing quality actually picking up or how much of it is actually people giving up and throwing their expectations bar to the floor so Guilty Crown can make it over.  Planning to catch up on the next 3-4 episodes this week and see if this one is worth continuing.  If nothing else, as mentioned, the visuals really are pretty awesome--almost awesome enough to warrant watching the show once just for them (great action scenes).

Ika Musume 2 1-7 - Not a lot to say here.  It's more Ika.  It's good, clean, silly fun.  And Mini-Ika segments are still hands-down some of the best things to come from Japan in the last few years.  Would recommend to anyone in the mood for some light-weight slice-of-life style comedy that, for a change, is not set in a high school.

And lastly, there's Fate/Zero, which I haven't gotten to yet because I was playing FSN this summer/fall and didn't want to spoil by watching FZ.  Now that I'm done with FSN I'll give FZ a shot once I've caught up on other things.

I thought the same thing, at first.  The first episode was basically filler, but the second episode did things much better.  While I was initally apprehensive of the third episode, it did keep the hijinks down somewhat, though I did like how it ended.  I haven't watched the fourth yet, but it should be interesting.

But I agree, it's a total trainwreck, but it's a pretty one.

yeah, tenken.  get on that michiko & hatchin stuff.  gives off a real cowboy bebop vibe despite being about something totally different.

and nozomi yamamoto's voice (yukimura the maid) just really puts me at ease when watching boku wa tomodachi ga sukunai.  looks like she's relatively new to the anime scene, so i hope she gets more and more roles like this.

Feh. You'll never get Tenk to watch Princess Tutu. I've been moaning at him to watch it for the last eight years (and as such claim all right to be the original Tutu fan-boy on this board - damn you late comers for taking so long!).

I dropped Penguindrum (finally) because it just became too exposition heavy and twisty-turny for the sake of it and the series hasn't done enough to make me care.

Watched the first episode of Hanamaru Youchien tonight and almost stopped half-way through because it's so much of what gets on my nerves in anime these days. Y'know, the cloyingly cute little girl, the overt "I'm totally surrounded by women here!" line of thinking, and the slightly disturbing "I'm a high school girl who's marrying my teacher who has made me pregnant and there's absolutely nothing wrong with this at all." It's like a very bad version of Mitsudomoe.

As for my two cents regarding Soul Eater - I guess I'm sort of like Tenken. I watched the first few episodes some time back in the foggy past and it just didn't do anything for me. Sure, I liked its visual style but there was nothing sufficient to make me interested and hook me.

I'm not sure I've got the mindset for out-and-out shonen anymore. I can still watch action-y series (Macross Frontier for all its cheesiness is great fun, and even something like Zakuro from last year whilst not being amazing was pleasantly diverting for its brief run) but out-and-out shonen just doesn't seem my bag anymore. Having said that, people do seem to love Gintama, so maybe I should give that a shot and see what happens.

Maybe I'll watch Princess Tutu when I'm done watching Soul Easter and DS9.  (Has about 100 episodes of DS9 left.)
