Let me play Devil's Advocate here.
I think Square was pretty lazy to only use simple character-replacement ciphers when writing the Spiran languages. Especially for the Yevon script. I say that because they are obviously designed to look like hieroglyphics. In that sense, each character should be a word idea.
It is still near that the writings have some kind of meaning though. I had always assumed it was all gibberish except the Al Bhed.
