I've been on a retro kick lately, and is currently looking into some old school RPGs I missed. I got Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete for the PS1 when it was released, and I'm now looking into the Eternal Blue Complete one. However, I'd like to know you guys' thoughts on which is better: the Saturn or the PS1 version? Let's say I've played both re-releases, is it worth it to go hunt down and play the original Sega CD ones?

Momoia =D

I personally didn't really like the Sega version of Lunar and I couldn't really play Lunar 2 on Sega. Reason why is because the PS1 version seemed warmer and had more detail and less plain atmosphere. However, you should give it a try if you really enjoyed the Lunar series because you never know =P the fighting is also pretty different from one game to another ( Alex being able to use Magic in the Sega version while in the PS1 version he can only use sword skills or Dragon skills ).

I've even tried the Lunar Harmony on PSP and still think the PS1 version is the best, the one on PSP was too easy mainly because they added "limit breaks" on each character. I don't recall ever trying the GBA version, though.

Crono
Crono can cross dimensions too!

The GBA version was simply awful.  If you see a copy kill it with fire.

I've never PLAYED the original versions of SS or EB but I have watched at least 30 minutes of each and that was enough to come to the conclusion that I wouldn't enjoy them nearly as much.  It's not as drastic of a leap as say FF on NES to FF on PSX or PSP but it's still too much to backtrack without having some sense of nostalgia to kick back with.  It's not as pretty, it has random encounters, and the localization was blah.

I really can't say which version is my favorite, the PS1 or PSP version.  Both have their pros but buth have their cons as well.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

For Lunar 1, the PSP release is really the best way to go; failing that the PSX version. Same with Lunar 2, honestly I see no need to play the Sega CD releases unless you want the REALLY old school approach. They've both aged like total shit.

The Sega CD versions are pretty much only worth it if you want a nostalgia kick. If these are games you'd have nostalgia for. Otherwise the PS1 versions are the way to go unless you really like dungeon crawls with an annoyingly high random encounter rate.

PSP version of Silver Star is very good, though. Only complaint I'd have is that it's a little too easy (though the main draw for me in Lunar is the charater development and dialog) and Ghaleon's new VA isn't as epic as his older one. Otherwise it captures the spirit of the Working Designs' localization while having a more accurate translation. Best of both worlds along with portability.

And avoid Lunar Legend for the GBA at all costs. It is by far the worst version of the game and has no redeeming features whatsoever.

Fuck Shit Stack.

Eternal blue to this day still had one of the most epic final boss themes.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll go hunt down Eternal Blue Complete for the PS. I guess it'd be better since I finished SS Complete on the PS anyway. I was just thinking if, from a purist point of view, whether the Sega CD games are better, but then again, I don't have any nostalgia for it, unless you count seeing it in magazines.
