September 11, 2013 ?? Steam Family Sharing, a new service feature that allows close friends and family members to share their libraries of Steam games, is coming to Steam, a leading platform for the delivery and management of PC, Mac, and Linux games and software. The feature will become available next week, in limited beta on Steam.

Steam Family Sharing is designed for close friends and family members to play one another's Steam games while each earning their own Steam achievements and storing their own saves and application data to the Steam cloud. It's all enabled by authorizing a shared computer.

??Our customers have expressed a desire to share their digital games among friends and family members, just as current retail games, books, DVDs, and other physical media can be shared,? explained Anna Sweet of Valve. ??Family Sharing was created in direct response to these user requests.?

Once a device is authorized, the lender's library of Steam games becomes available for others on the machine to access, download, and play. Though simultaneous usage of an account??s library is not allowed, the lender may always access and play his games at any time. If he decides to start playing when a friend is borrowing one of his games, the friend will be given a few minutes to either purchase the game or quit playing.

Love it. Literally my only beef with it is that it's not quite as good as what was planned for the X1 and that sharing is a on an entire library basis and not a per game basis, and thus isn't true sharing/loaning (i.e. if someone I authorise wants to play my Sanctum 2, they can't do that while I play Saints Row IV). But even that's a minor complaint - this is an amazing feature and I can't wait to take advantage of it.

Crono can cross dimensions too!

Holy fucking shit that is amazing.  I know several people who have godlike steam collections and rarely play so you better believe I'm getting in with them.  I'm curious how many people you can share with at a time and what the UI will look like if it changes to suit.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

Up to 10 devices can be authorised per account (their wording, not mine, so it's a little unclear if it's really account based - which would make sense given how everything else is worded - or device based), and I doubt there'll be any major UI devices. Probably just a seperate category for "______'s Games" in the Library submenu along with All Games, installed, Favourites, ect.

I admit that I would like to try something like this. We should start a voluntary club for FFO so we can share games. =D

First thing i thought of when i saw this was not about sharing games with family or friends, they either don't play games, or play console games. First thing i thought of was making a new account for my HTPC so i dont have to keep logging out and logging back in.

I'd like to know more about it first, but if it seems good i'd be up for a FFO Steam family thing lol. You can all try the games i got randomly and have never played :)

Okay just to clarify, let's say I have two games: Civ V and FTL.  I want to play FTL, and my wife wants to play Civ V.  I can share Civ V with her and she could play Civ V from a different account while I play FTL?  The way I read it kinda sounded like I could only have one game from my library active at a time.

I think it's the latter one. I think if she is playing FTL, and you start to play Civ5 she will get a pop up asking her if she wants to quit the game, or buy the game.

I'm not entirely sure but i've signed up for the beta for this so once i get in i'll hopefully know more.

Yeah, it's the latter. I think the main point is to make it easier to manage things for people sharing a computer, which is why there's the emphasis on seperate saves and settings. The multiple devices thing is just a bonus.

It's going to be a bit of a hassle for people trying to use it to just share a bunch of free games with friends they're not living with, unless both parties are willing to set schedules on who gets to play when.
