All hail the mighty Gaben and his big three announcements! First one was the SteamOS

https://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamOS/

This one i don't know how i feel. One hand It's good to get away from Windows but it's basicly Linux and i think i can count on 1 hand how many games i have that run with Linux. If i can I'll probably try it as a dual boot thingo on my HTPC. Next announcement will be a Steam Box, 3rd announcement IMO will be Half Life 3 which will be compatible with SteamOS, maybe even a timed exclusive

I am still fairly certain there will be no Valve branded Steam box. I could go into all the reasons (the biggest thing being Gabe's pushing of open platforms, and a closed, Valve branded Steam Box wouldn't make any sense with that mindset) and the fact taht they let most of their hardware staff go some time ago, but this article does it better: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2013/09/23/calm-down-internet-valve-isnt-building-their-own-steam-box/

I also wouldn't get any hopes for a  HL3 announcement up. Timed exclusive also runs completely counter to the open platform philosophy Valve's pushing.

As for the SteamOS itself, I think it's brilliant, but it needs a lot of things to truly shine. Yes, it's awesome to be able to turn my laptop into a SteamOS based computer to stream my PC games to it (and thus my TV or around the house), but it needs to be good for that. They need to get the AAA publishers in on publishing more games to Linux if it's really going to flourish.

Yeah I'm with Ash on a SteamBox, it's obvious that Valve (rightly) realised they'd never make a PC killer, and that streaming is the way to go. I see a low cost box for streaming being announced, similar to the Vita TV.

I mean, there WILL be SteamBoxes. It's inevitable particularly if SteamOS gets the support it needs. I just don't think there'll be a Valve made and branded one.

It's no secret that Gabe and company despise Windows 8 (and with good reason). Even if Valve announces some kind of hardware, it's the OS that'll be the main focus anyway.

I made this for you!

When I first saw the Steam OS thing, I was thinking maybe it would be an app for smart TVs.  Is that possible?

That would be seriously disruptive technology in the video game industry if it was successful, great idea.  Surely it could/would kill off consoles and companies like Alienware?

Called it. So, Valve is partnering with hardware manufactors to produce a fleet of different and vastly catering SteamBoxes, rather than one made by Valve. The catch is, they still have the prototype machines built by the hardware division last year, and they're going to form a 300 person beta using those machines to see how well the "SteamBox" works.

Sounds pretty legit to me. Again, if SteamOS/Linux can get the traction it needs this is a logical step forward for the world of gaming PCs.

Rumor has it the third announcement on Friday is a partnership with AMD, and to a lesser extent Nvidia.

nVidia just said today they're trying to work harder on getting in with Linux's open source driver community and generally acknowledge better that Linux is a thing, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is it.

Also, the reaction from devs and studios is interesting: http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/09/25/valves-steamos-and-steam-machines-announcements-developers-react/ | http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/09/25/ken-levine-steamos-is-a-brave-and-powerful-idea/

I think nVidia had no choice really - if AMD's really locked up a partnership with Valve, then nVidia's lost a LOT in the last year.
Have you read their press releases lately? They're ripping into consoles like a petulant child since they lost the PS4/XBone contracts.

So, it's a new Steam controller then.

According to Tommy Refenes (of Super Meat Boy fame) it's a pretty good controller.  Just needs a few tweaks and is stil not in its final form.
