Wouldn't it be great to just watch the storyline and not have to worry about playing the game?

As I was replaying Vagrant Story, I ground out a 30+ hour game collecting components for weapon upgrades.  While doing so, I spent a massive amount of time between events, and while I know the story behind Vagrant Story well, it struck me that in most role-playing games, this is not the case.  Players often spend so much time leveling and searching that there could be hours of actual gameplay (and days or weeks of actual time) between game events, causing people to lose track of the storyline.

I think we need this: after beating a game, there would be an option to re-watch the story events in order, in one long, continuous movie.  Hell, you could even include some gameplay footage in the film, to show what objectives had to be met by the player to advance the plot.  You could complete the game, then sit and watch, unencumbered by the hours-long interruptions, enjoying the plot and the twists and turns.

Think of how many small points are missed while playing through games.  You could understand everything.  How many times have you watched a movie for the tenth time and picked something up that you'd never seen or realized before?

Whoa, this is actually a good point, I can finally enjoy the story of Vagrant story without putting up with the gameplay. I can't believe I didn't think it that I could finally see the rest of the story I never got to see. I'm gonna start watching it. It's funny because that example is perfect.  THANKS!

Wait, wait!  I wasn't trashing Vagrant Story's gameplay.  I love Vagrant Story's gameplay.  Love it.  It was only an example.

You should totally play Vagrant Story.

I'm trying to think of the game(s) that would let you watch all the cgi in order but even they lacked the in-game cinemaics and dialogue that helped tie things together. It's pretty choppy to watch most games' story in that manner, a lot of the things that happen tend to lack context and whatnot. It's a feature I would enjoy though especially when I just want to sit and watch something, which is more often than not nowadays.

Hmmm, might have to check out the youtube thing, especially for games I'll likely never play now.

I know you weren't. I have, I've tried twice, and I've only gotten halfway through. I just dont like it. But I forgot I had never enjoyed the rest of it, since that was before the days of Youtube, so now I can finally see the rest of the storyline. It's just funny your example was the one game that this is the case for me, as I'm usually willing to put up with the gameplay for a good story.

I would like that. One of the things that annoyed me about Arkham City was that I spent so long doing sidequests I had forgotten most of the story.

Yep, still gaming

Well, there was a Xenosaga I CD released with Xenosaga II (I imagine, I can't remember how I got it) that has all the cutscenes in it, I was hoping they would do the same with II and III.

*cough* Suikoden III *cough*

I'm just giving you a hard time, we all knew that game wasn't for everyone when you went into it.

I've youtubed a game or two in it's entirety that I'd already played but didn't want to invest the time to replay because they were so huge.  DQ VIII was my first I think.  I wanted to experience the dialogue and charm again but GOD I didn't have time for all that stuff inbetween story points.  Not harping on the gameplay; I enjoyed it first time around.  I just don't think it would have held up for another 45 hours especially now that I have way more games to play then I did back in 2006.

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.
