Shadow
Comes and goes like the wind...

Okay, so I'm about half way through the game now (just the beginning of the WOR). I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I would get addicted to playing what I consider my all time favorite game.  But I've not been disapointed so far with the purchase. Here's my positives and negatives so far.

+ Fighting System - The ability to auto que up the previous action makes everything so much faster, and saves frustration of trying to tap through the small buttons on the iPhone.

+ Graphics - Yes the character sprites look goofy, and I'm not a huge fan but everything else looks lush, colorful, and just a bit sharper (except for a few areas where you can tell they didn't do anything except stretch them, but they are far between).

+ Small Interface tweaks - Player portraits in the text boxes look great, they put relics into the equip screen, and swapping espers is much easier now, they also have the exp. to next level listed right on the main screen, and a little "star" beside any esper you've fully learned. Your next objective shows up as a red square on the map, and I coudl see the next objective help line at the top being useful for first time players, overall I think all of these things are positive changes to the game that don't ruin what the original game was all about.

Negatives
- Movement and speaking - There's some points in the game (like the dinner sequence) where you have to do things in a hurry, and moving and tapping to speak to people just always feels cumbersome with a touch pad compared to a d-pad and buttons. Fortunately the game doesn't require too much movement finesse, but the few sequences that it does end up just being annoying. I've gotten used to it for standard movement, but it's definitely uncomfortable if you're not doing anything else.

- I rarely fight any battles now without the "Play" button which just uses the last action, I did list that as a positive because it's actually great. The problem is when you do want to do something manually it is really annoying on the iPhone tapping the small buttons.

- And finally yes the character sprites, they look a bit too cartoony, they've lost a bit of perspective, and the colors feel a bit off and washed out on many of them. Some of them don't even appear to have proper details.

Either way I'm still super enjoying it so far, and have been taking screenshots throughout the entire playthrough so if anyone wants to see what some particular areas look like just message me or post in this thread.

I recently replayed FF6 on an emulator on my Galaxy S4, and the default controls were super uncomfortable. However, the software lets you customize the control pad to ANYTHING you want , you can move the buttons to anywhere on the screen you want (There's an embedded SNES controller buttons on the screen) I just positioed them to where it was natural for my fingers to go. Can you do anything like that?

As far as I know you can't, in the official version anytime you touch the screen a movement directional helper appears to show which direction you're pushing in. And if you're in range of say a person to talk to, or a chest to open an exclamation point will appear any any screen press will activate that instead of activating your movement.

Again, in most situations this is fine and you don't need really refined control, but in others it's just kind of awful.

I'm still enjoying it immensely again, the game is not ruined by this -- but the SNES/GBA versions will probably still remain my favorites.

Atma Weapon
I Am Pure Energy

I bought the game. I've only played through the opening credits. So far the new sprites don't blther me. They were always cartoonish, and now they're cartoonish with more pixels.

I agree that the music sounds worse than it did on SNES, but so did all of the other ports

I'm in the WOR now, just mopping up all the quests and doing some of the level grinding. Good times, I've gotten pretty efficient at it. I usually grab Mog first so that I can walk around most dungeons without random battles.

One tip for leveling up, which not many people use:

Equip: The Offering + Exp. Egg (the names changed for the ports, but its the item where you can hit four times). Anyways after you have these equipped you cast vanish on yourself, and then take that one single character to the area outside Doma Castle.

99% of the time the enemies there use physical attacks and won't hit you, and you get anywhere between say 14,000 and 22,000 exp per battle depending on the enemy, which for the early levels means about one level per fight. You can get a character from about level 38 to level 50 in about 9-10 minutes.

Crono
Crono can cross dimensions too!

Another grinding tip for that location: You don't get enough points to really gain magic there so make sure you've got espers equiped with good stat boosts (speed/magic, whatever you like).  Just hit up the area around Miranda for the magic.  You know, to the one or two of you who don't already know this game inside and out like most of us. :D

Currently Playing: Dark Cloud 2: 3 hours.
Also Playing: CT, FF VI, Solatorobo, Secret of Mana, Halo 4.
Just Finished: Fable II: 7 hours.

Atma Weapon
I Am Pure Energy

I like to keep one of the atma weapon users as a pure physical attacker (aka never equip an esper to them, so they never learn spells), to use for grinding in the coliseum. Since your actions are selected randomly in the coliseum, you will do much more damage quickly if there isn't a spell list. Locke is a good choice because he doesn't have native magic like Terra and Celes. And also, thief knife!

I'm just really enjoying the fact that we all have an excuse to talk about the game again, it's been fun replaying it again as it's been a number of years sine I beat the GBA version. As much as FFVI is my favorite game of all time, I also try to make sure years go by between playthroughs so that it doesn't lose all meaning.

I got a question.

What translation did they use?  SNES, GBA, or something entirely new for iPhone?
