YLOD. What's my best option now?

My PS3 just took a crap.  Short of just sending it out and essentially trading it (and my money) to Sony for a refurbished model, I want to know whether I should replace it, buy a PS4 now, or just wait.  I don't play that often any more, but enough to warrant keeping a system of some sort.  I have a ton of PS3 games that I've been replaying, and am trying to figure out if these will ever be playable on the PS4 (I know there's no backward compatibility, but I've heard rumblings about being able to download titles someday from the PSN for a discounted rate if you have the disc in hand; is any of that true?).  I know there isn't much content on the PS4 yet, and that's telling me to hold off.

So what's the verdict?  Wait until summer, when the Gaikai thing hits, or get one now and play what little is available?

The Gaikai service is still going to be prett ylimited at launch, most likely. If you want maximum gaming and nothing available now or in the next few months on Next Gen really grabs you by the balls, it might be better (and mroe cost effective) to replace your PS3.

Who knows if the streaming will even be viable. It was somewhat impressive, but to me even the smallest amount of lag is going to ruin a streaming experience.

I have a ps4. I do not regret the decision at all. I'm a PSPlus member and I enjoyed both Resogun and Contrast, and I'm getting ready to install Don't Starve, all for free. If you have a Vita the remote play option is cool.

I've only bought FIFA 14 for it, which looks amazing, and if I had the time (funds not really a problem) I would pick up Tomb Raider Definitive and maybe Assassin's Creed IV for it.

If you really want to play stuff RIGHT NOW though, I'd probably just replace the PS3. The problem is that's not really all that cheap either. Those new Blue ones they have out look pretty sweet, but it would probably be better to get used.

I'm going to try SCIENCE!

I used these guys when my PS3 fat crapped out in 2011. They did good work and fixed the YLOD, although they advise thereafter not to use the PS3 for more than 2 hours at a time to avoid overheating the resin used in repair. Also I don't think this was related but just to be up front my disk drive did fail several months later forcing me to say screw it and get a slim.

At any rate, it's still cheaper than Sony and I can't fault their workmanship considering I sent it all the way to Minnesota and it returned with the same ME2 disc that had been trapped inside when the YLOD struck. Also they offer free shipping both ways, which is great since the PS3 had the fattest ass of Gen 7.

The only PS3 I think is worth paying the refurbish price for is the backwards compatible ones.
