Hi,

My computer was recently infected by a virus that displays the following message when I try to start it :"Trend chip away virus has detected a boot virus on your hard disk!". I tried to restore the system to an earlier time, but it had no effect. Additionnal symptoms include random rebooting of my computer. Is there a procedure a non-expert such as me could use to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

What antivirus software, if any, do you use?

You may be able to solve this problem on your own.

First, go to

https://www.malwarebytes.org/

Download MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, update it, run a complete scan, remove any detected malware, restart your computer, and run another scan. If this turns up negative, and you have no further symptoms, you are probably okay*.

If (1) your first MBAM scan does not detect anything or (2) your second MBAM scan detects something (you have a regenerating infection or (3) you still have symptoms despite no detection by MBAM, then:

A) You might still be able to solve the problem on your own, by (1) going to

https://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

, replacing your current antivirus software with Avira (is free), and running a complete scan, and going to

https://www.eset.eu/eset-online-scanner

while using Internet Explorer, and allowing it to scan your system and remove any malware.

IF you still have problems (regenerating infection, or one not identified and cleared by MBAM, Avira, or ESET), then go here:

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showforum=7

Read the "I'm Infected-what do I do now?" sticky, and then post a thread on the forum with the appropriate logfiles. Someone who can read the logfiles will give you complete, detailed instructions on how to clean your system of the specifc infection(s) that they can identify.

*= I recommend you switch to Avira and (at the very least) run an ESET scan anyway, just to be safe. Also, if you have someone from that forum help you clean your system, please be polite with them. They are unpaid volunteers.

Your best bet would be to run an antivirus boot disc. Do you have a separate system to create one on ?

I use Kapersky as an antivirus software.

I do have another computer that I could use, however I don't know how to create and use an antivirus boot disk.

Well, the easiest solution I could suggest would be this one:

https://www.avg.com/ww-en/avg-rescue-cd

If that is ineffective, you're going to need some more powerful solutions.
