Power Supply

A friend of mine asked me to take a look at their PC. You press the power button and nothing happens. I opened it up and checked all the connections, cleaned out the dust. No response. I know it's the power supply.

We work together and they're on a tight budget. I found a replacement for about 30$ which isn't bad. Before I order it though, I just want to make sure I'm not wasting her money over something I should have asked around about.

Looks like you got the right one.

Now, the main question, did you replace the power cable and check the socket to make sure it had power? Check the 115v/230v switch and make sure no one set it to 230v? Completely remove the PSU, plug it into the wall, and short the solitary green wire on the 20-pin connector to a black wire? You want to make absolutely sure it's the PSU before you go replacing it. For all you know, it could be a dud power switch.

I do feel your pain, however - my very nice 550w PSU blew last weekend, popped the internal fuse. If the internal fuse ever blows, you can theoretically replace it, but practical advice is to never trust a PSU that blows it's fuse. Luckily I had a spare, and remembered how to wire a two-Molex-to-VC-6pin adapter. It's a little thin on the +12V rail though, so no gaming until I buy a new one.

I assume this will "turn it on"? Can I just disconnect all the wiring or do you recommend physically removing it from the case?

Just make sure everything is unplugged. You don't want something getting power unless the motherboard connector is plugged in.

The green wire is the +12VSB wire, and the power switch just shorts it to ground.

(Interesting trivia, the -12V and -5V rails are unused in modern computers. They were only needed to support some very legacy cards on the ISA bus, and that hasn't existed since before the turn of the millenia.)

I knew that I couldn't think of a single use for them in the modern setting, but I didn't realize that's why they were around.
