I have a HTPC with windows media center on it. Used it for a long time but i have read a few things that say media center is actually horrible and there are better alternatives. My question is, what are some of these good alternatives?

The two most popular are VLC (https://www.videolan.org/vlc/) and Media Player Classic (https://www.cccp-project.net/). I prefer Media Player Classic as a standalone but they are both good. I also use Winamp (https://www.winamp.com/) for music and like it a lot.

Depends, what are you using media center for, primarily? Do you have Windows XP media center edition?

If it works well for you, I say don't fix it. There might be a program out there with a few features that are nifty, but unless you are looking for a specific function, I'd stick with what works.

thanks for the recommendations but none of them have TV tuner support. I did get XBMC and for everything that isn't TV it's amazing so thank you for that. For TV though decided to stick with WMC. Like LB said if it ain't broke don't fix it.

You could try this: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=MythTV
