I so want this to be good.

I have to say that they really need to stop having Harrison Ford do any interviews for anything he does as the man clearly just doesn't give a shit anymore.

I want to trust in Villeneuve because Arrival is apparently really good (I haven't seen it yet, myself)...

... but this movie is King of Unnecessary Sequel Mountain.

I want it to be good, I really want it to be good, and the trailers are promising, but... but... I just don't have a lot of optimism for it.

I'm with you on that. Like you say, even if the movie delivers on all fronts it's still completely unnecessary.

So:

98% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes.

"Universal acclaim" at Metacritic.

Post your reviews after you see it. :)

Neverfuckingmind, I'm all in now. Everything I've read has filled me with hype. I'm fuckin' here for it.

The movie delivered. This was the best possible outcome we could have hoped for a film that arguably shouldn't exist in the first place. It is able to build upon and expand the world we first saw in the original and the plot isn't some simple rehash of the first movie either.

The peformances from all the actors are solid. Hell Harrison Ford in his maybe two and half minute scene with Jered Leto gives a better peformance here than he has in twenty years elswhere. It's been fucking forever since I've seen him this engaged with the material of a movie he's been involved with.

Visuially there's no comparision. You don't get better photography in film than this. If Roger Deacons doesn't win an Oscar for this than you might as well get rid of the the catagory all together. The FX blend was well done, just the right mix of practicle with CGI support.

Unfortunately the movie has the shit luck of being dropped during a time(with all the shit that's happened lately)when people probably aren't in the mood to see something that scews bleak/bittersweet. The almost 3 hr run time doesn't help either as movie houses can't have as many showings in a day, but it looks as though history is repeating itself as the movie has tanked at the BO.

Hopefully postive word of mouth will help this a bit. But seriously people, go see this flick. We need to show that there is an audiance for a movie/s like this or else we will only continue to get the fluff sci-fi like the new Transformer's movies.

I put this bit from the NYT review of the movie under spoiler tags so no one will be tainted.  For those who have seen the movie, do you agree or disagree with the sentiment of the reviewer?

Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
The studio has been unusually insistent in its pleas to critics not to reveal plot points. That??s fair enough, but it??s also evidence of how imaginatively impoverished big-budget movies have become. Like any great movie, Mr. Scott??s ??Blade Runner? cannot be spoiled. It repays repeated viewing because its mysteries are too deep to be solved and don??t depend on the sequence of events. Mr. Villeneuve??s film, by contrast, is a carefully engineered narrative puzzle, and its power dissipates as the pieces snap into place. As sumptuous and surprising as it is from one scene to the next, it lacks the creative excess, the intriguing opacity and the haunting residue of its predecessor.

As such, ??Blade Runner 2049? stands in relation to ??Blade Runner? almost exactly as K stands in relation to Deckard before the two meet: as a more docile, less rebellious ??improvement,? tweaked and retrofitted to meet consumer demand. And the customers are likely to be satisfied. But now and then ?? when K and Deckard are knocking around the old gambling palace; when K visits an enigmatic mind-technician played by Carla Juri ?? you get an inkling that something else might have been possible. Something freer, more romantic, more heroic, less determined by the corporate program.

I think that critic??s take is utter bullshit. Bladerunner 2049 probably has the most anti-corporate plot of any movie I??ve ever seen. So it??s hard to buy a narrative that it follows the corporate script in any way. It??s set in a lawless future ruled by corporate oligarchs. No citizen believes or even acts like they have rights to speak of. The police department??s stated purpose is ??to maintain order.? Full stop.

It could be more heroic? Are fucking kidding dude? It??s a fucking dystopian horror piece.

Agreed. It's also bullshit because he gives the first movie way more credit than it actually deserves.

I have to reserve judgement on the original film, because the one time I watched it I wasn??t mature enough to appreciate this type of fiction. I may have still been in high school.

I really enjoyed this movie and I can't stop thinking about it.

That being said it would be pretty easy to completely excise Jared Leto from the whole thing and very little would change. You could give all his major scenes to Luv (could even have her working on Wallace's behalf without Wallace ever actually appearing on screen) reasonably easily.

Spoiler: Move your mouse over the container to reveal.
This only really occured to me because the climax and subsequent ending of the movie completely ignore him? Like...
K: "You drowned out there. Go meet your kid who you've specifically been avoiding because Wallace is looking for her."
Deckard: "Sure, sure, I'm sure they'll never come after me."

Wallace: "So you found Luv and the two drivers in the car? No Deckard?"
Luv2, the Sequel: "No Deckard. And his restraints had clearly been removed."
Wallace: "Welp, time to start looking for him again. Oh hey look there he is in the security cameras over at the place we get our fake memories from."

Decent point. I feel this is a film where the setting and the overarching themes are more important than the details of the plot and how they hang together. It doesn??t really bother me.
