Interested in how things work.

I'm interested in expanding on what I know and finding out how certain things work so I've decided to acquire some books and whatnot to expand on my knowhow. The problem is I don't know where to begin. I do know I want to learn useful and practical things I can put to use, and I don't necessarily want said knowledge to rely on anything but rather create it. Maybe something on wiring electronics, minor mechanical, knowledge I could put to use in case of a disaster. It is an odd question but any advice on books or something more specific to study would be great.

I couldn't recommend any books, but Google is a wonderful tool. Just choose something you want to do.

Popular Mechanics might be of some help in your quest.

The best advice I have if you're tied to books is head to your local library and ask the librarian.

It's basic overviews, but lots of cool diagrams and animations on mechanical things, etc. etc. This is what I used to get lost on before wikipedia:

Start with books designed to do help you do anyting around the house like practical plumbing, carpentry etc.  Go from there.

Peruse the self help section of any library or bookstore.  There's a wealth of good stuff there beyond the usual "for dummies" fare.

Learn how to wire your own lighting from basic materials in case the entire world is exposed to a massive electromagnetic pulse and all existing electrical devices are fried a la the ending of Escape From LA or the world is overcome with shadowy phantoms that are driven away by light like in Vanishing on 7th Street.

Yes, all of my motivations for learning come from doomsday scenarios in movies. You won't be laughing when I'm creating home made disinfectant/molotov fuel with a distillery in a stilted shack far above the zombie hordes.
